NA TIGERS MAUL MOON TIGERS 5-0 IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS Playing outdoors on the NASH courts for only the second time this season, the Tigers Tennis Squad swept the Moon Area Tigers 5-0 Monday afternoon in the first round of the WPIAL Team Playoffs. Using home court to their advantage, the Tigers dominated the action in four of the five matches. Junior Chris Lippiello, senior Bennett Salvatora and freshman Kevin Goth cruised in straight set matches at number one, two and three singles respectively. The number one doubles tandem of juniors Will Suhrie and Steve Klein controlled play decisively in another sweep while the number two team of seniors Mike Palmeri and Alex Lapiana overcame a slow start to clinch their win in a three set match. The win raises the Tigers’ record to 15-1 and propels them to the Quarterfinal round of the WPIAL Team Playoffs Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers will host Central Catholic with Tuesday’s action on the NASH courts starting at 3:30 PM.

Doubles * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS DUO BOW IN WPIAL QUARTERFINALS Junior Chris Lippiello and senior Bennett Salvatora, Section 2 Doubles Champions, represented North Allegheny Thursday afternoon at the WPIAL AAA Doubles Championships held at Norwin High School. Their first round draw was Mt. Lebanon’s #2 team of Nick Reese and Raffaele Rusulan who they defeated with dispatch, 10-4. Advancing to the quarterfinal round, Lippiello and Salvatora fell to the Bethel Park team of Caleb Troy and Collin Bandell, 10-3. Chris and Bennett, the Tigers’ number one and two singles players this season, demonstrated their strong pride in the NA Tennis tradition by working very well together as a doubles tandem. Congratulations gentlemen! The Tigers’ squad, Section 2 Champions, begin the team phase of the WPIAL Playoffs on Monday, May 9, when they host the Moon Tigers. TIGERS FALL 3-2 IN
EXHIBITION VS Indoors at the Lakevue Racquet Club Tuesday night, the Tigers fell for the first time this year in a hard-fought exhibition with Sewickley Academy. Stellar performances were turned in by freshman Kevin Goth at number three singles along with the number two doubles team of freshman Steve Chuirazzi and sophomore Connor Goodman. The loss drops the Tigers’ record to 13-1 on the season. Still preparing for next week’s WPIAL team playoffs, the Tigers travel to Bethel Park Tuesday afternoon for an exhibition with the Blackhawks at the Glenn Creek Tennis Club. The starting time is slated for 3:30.

Doubles * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA COMPLETES SECTION PLAY UNDEFEATED Indoors at PURE Athletex once more, the Tigers swept neighborhood rival North Hills, 5-0, for the second time this season Monday afternoon. The win completed Section 2 play for the 2011 campaign, giving North Allegheny a 12-0 section mark and the title outright for the first time in two years. Junior Chris Lippiello, freshman Kevin Goth and junior Will Suhrie controlled all three singles matches respectively, losing only three games in the process. Junior Steve Klein and senior Mike Palmeri took a tough three set match at number one doubles while senior Alex Lapiana and freshman Steve Chuirazzi swept at number two doubles. The win raises the team’s overall record to 13-0. The Tigers now await results from the W.P.I.A.L. seeding process to determine the playoff schedule which will begin next week. In the meantime, an exhibition on the road against the Double AA Sewickley Academy Panthers is next on the schedule. The starting time for Tuesday afternoon’s match at Nichols Field in Sewickley is slated for 4:15 PM.

LIPPIELLO & SALVATORA WIN SECTION North Allegheny’s #1 doubles team of junior Chris Lippiello and senior Bennett Salvatora claimed the WPIAL Section Doubles championship on Thursday afternoon. As the top seed in the section tournament, Lippiello and Salvatora received a first round bye and then easily handled Shaler’s #1 team in the quarterfinals, 10-0. In their semi-final match, the NA combo won in two straight sets (6-3, 6-3) against a good #1 Butler team of Zac McCafferty and A.J. May. In the finals, Lippiello and Salvatora faced a well-balanced Pine-Richland team of Ji-Ho Park and Caleb Kramer, but they again won in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) to take home the section trophy. With the win, Lippiello and Salvatora move on to the WPIAL Finals scheduled for next Thursday and Friday. Also in action on Thursday, the NA #2 doubles team of Willie Suhrie and Kevin Goth earned a first round win of 10-0 over Central Valley’s #1 team. Suhrie and Goth fell in the quarterfinals in a close, hard-fought match to a very good Seneca Valley #1 team, 10-7. The Raiders duo went on to win third place overall in the section. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS TACKLE CENTRAL VALLEY IN 5-0 SWEEP With the indoor courts of PURE Athletex as the setting again, the Tigers swept the Central Valley Warriors for the second time this season on Wednesday afternoon, 5-0, in a dominating section performance leading up to spring break. This win extends the Tigers’ season record to 11-0, along with a 10-0 mark in Section 2 play. Freshman Kevin Goth and juniors Will Suhrie and Steve Klein commanded all three singles matches respectively, losing only two games in the process. Seniors Mike Palmeri and Alex Lapiana controlled number one doubles, losing only 1 game, while junior Phil Krassenstein and sophomore Connor Goodman took care of number two doubles with similar dispatch. Following the break, the Tigers resume play with an exhibition on Tuesday, the 26th, on the road against the Double AA Hampton Talbots. Scheduled for the Hampton Community Park, match time is slated for 3:30 PM.

Freshman Kevin Goth started the scoring by sweeping Nick Rocchi at number three singles without losing a game, 6-0, 6-0. The second point came courtesy of the number one doubles tandem of juniors Will Suhrie and Steve Klein who prevailed over Erik May and A.J. May, 6-3, 6-4. The clinching point was turned in by the number two doubles team of senior Mike Palmeri and freshman Steve Chuirazzi who took David Bright and Jon Condon in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. The win raises the Tigers’ record to 10-0, with a 9-0 section mark. Section 2 play continues Wednesday afternoon as the Central Valley Warriors visit again for a 2:30 PM match scheduled at PURE Athletex.

Despite missing three starters due to injury and school-related travel, the Tigers’ team depth was the determining factor as they juggled their line-up to counteract the Raiders’ starting seven. Starting off the scoring, junior Steve Klein cruised at number two singles against Andrew Aluise, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Mike Palmeri, in his first singles action of the year at the number three slot, followed suit by sweeping, 6-0, 6-0 against Kurt Branby. The third and clinching point came courtesy of the number two doubles team of juniors Phil Krassenstein and Anish Manocha who took a three set thriller, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 against Joe Shults and Matt Hochberg. Freshman Kevin Goth played his first match at number one singles and extended Jon Perkins superbly in a two-set match before falling, 4-6, 3-6. The number one doubles team of seniors Alex Lapiana and freshman Steve Chuirazzi played a spirited three-set match that fell to Seneca’s Troy Abbott and Mayank Parashar, 6-3, 2-6, 5-7. The Tigers improved their overall season record to 7-0, including a 6-0 section mark. Next on the schedule, the Tigers travel to the heart of Butler County to take on defending PIAA Triple A champions, the Butler Golden Tornado. Doubles * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS REACH QUARTERFINALS IN SECTION-2 FINALS The WPIAL AAA Tennis, Section Two Singles Tournament began the first day of competition at the NASH courts on Thursday afternoon with two Tigers seeing action. In the preliminary round the # 6 seed, freshman Kevin Goth, defeated Mat Nites of Shaler (#11 seed) 10-0 while junior Steve Klein, the #8 seed, defeated central Valley’s Alex Fischer (#9 seed) 10-2 . The quarterfinal round saw Klein fall to #1 seed Bas Van Lent of Pine Richland 1-10 and Goth to #3 seed Ji-Ho Park, also from Pine-Richland, 4-10. Goth and Klein, participating in Section Singles for the first time, represented North Allegheny very proficiently. The entire Tigers tennis team returns to action tomorrow in a section match with Seneca Valley. Originally scheduled for the NASH courts on Wednesday, this home match will now be played indoors at the PURE Athletex complex in Bradford Woods starting at 2 PM. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS EXTEND SECTION WIN STREAK The Tigers found shelter indoors for their third consecutive section match Monday afternoon and prevailed against their neighborhood rivals, defeating the North Hills Indians 5-0. Using their injury-adjusted lineup, the Tigers battled a determined Indians squad at the PURE Athletex complex. Senior Bennett Salvatora (#1), freshman Kevin Goth (#2) and junior Steve Klein (#3) took their singles matches in straight sets. At first doubles, the combo of seniors Mike Palmeri and Alex Lapiana was challenged but still prevailed in straight sets. The number two doubles team of junior Phil Krassenstein and freshman Steve Chuirazzi also came out on top in their two-set match. The Tigers improved their overall season record to 6-0, including a 5-0 section mark. Next on the schedule will be an exhibition match Tuesday afternoon against the Double A Sewickley Academy Panthers. This road match is scheduled for a 4:15 PM start time.

TIGERS SWEEP CENTRAL VALLEY 5-0 Thursday afternoon, in a home match that was moved indoors due to inclement weather, the Tigers stormed past Section 2 newcomer, the Central Valley Warriors, 5-0 in straight matches. Played at the PURE Athletex Complex in Bradford Woods, freshman Kevin Goth opened the scoring at number two singles by defeating Alex Fischer 6-0, 6-0. Soon to follow was senior Bennett Salvatora at number one singles, dispatching George Detrich 6-0, 6-0. The clinching points came simultaneously, as junior Steve Klein, seeing his first singles action of the year at the number three slot, beat Chris Shaheen 6-1, 6-0. Keeping pace, the first doubles combo of seniors Mike Palmeri and Alex Lapiana defeated Ryan Vucina and Matt Paul 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out the scoring for NA’s fifth point were the second doubles tandem of junior Phil Krassenstein and freshman Steve Chuirazzi who defeated Nate Kiliany and Cody Keane, 6-1, 6-0. The win improves the Tigers’ record in the young season to 4-0, with a 3-0 mark in section play. The Tigers take on neighborhood rival, the Shaler Area Titans, Friday afternoon at 2 PM at the PURE Athletex complex. (The match was originally scheduled for the Shaler courts but was moved due to the weather conditions. It will be considered a home match for North Allegheny.)

TIGERS ROAR PAST RAMS IN EARLY-SEASON Monday afternoon at Pine-Richland High School, the Tigers overcame an early deficit and played outstanding tennis under high-pressure conditions to walk away with a 4-1 win in Section 2 play. The contest began ominously for the Tigers as number one singles player, junior Chris Lippiello, had to retire due to injury in the first set while playing Bas Van Lent. Starting the comeback trail for the Tigers was freshman Kevin Goth at number three singles, dispatching Brett O’Donnell 6-0, 6-1 to even the score at one apiece. The Tigers’ second point came courtesy of the number two doubles combo of senior Alex Lapiana and freshman Steve Chuirazzi who defeated Hunter Coury and Tyler Boyd in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The remaining two contests were drama filled yet dropped into the victory column for the Tigers to secure the win. At number two singles, in perhaps one of his finest scholastic moments, senior Bennett Salvatora took the first set against Ji-Ho Park, 6-0. Falling behind 0-5 in the second set, Salvatora fashioned a seven game barrage of unrelenting winners under extreme duress to take the set 7-5 along with the clinching match point for the Tigers. The number one doubles team of senior Mike Palmeri and junior Steve Klein simultaneously defeated Adam Molitor and Brian Beck in a three set contest, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 to earn the Tigers’ fourth point. The win raises the Tigers’ record to 3-0 on the early season, including a 2-0 section mark. They are in action again Wednesday afternoon for their first home match of the season against new Section 2 opponents, Central Valley High School. Match time on the NASH courts is scheduled for 3:30 PM.

Doubles * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS OPEN SECTION PLAY WITH VICTORY OVER SENECA VALLEY A sunny and windswept Monday afternoon saw the Tigers begin Section 2 play with a convincing win on the road over the Seneca Valley Raiders, 4-1. The first points came courtesy of number three singles, where freshman Kevin Goth defeated Andrew Aluise, 6-0, 6-0. Following shortly afterwards, the number two doubles unit of senior Alex Lapiana and freshman Steve Chuirazzi bested Mattthew Ruwe and Matt Hochberg 6,0, 6-1. The third and clinching point came when senior Bennett Salvatora completed a two set win with near perfect serving on the windy day, handling Troy Abbott 6-0, 6-0. The fourth and final point proved to be the most challenging and exciting. The number one doubles tandem of senior Mike Palmeri and junior Steve Klein took the first set 6-3 and then battled through a tie-break 7-6 (7-5) to hold off Joe Shults and Mayank Prashar. The win raised the Tigers’ record to 2-0 in early season play, including a 1-0 mark in the section. The Tigers host defending state champions, Butler, on the NASH courts tomorrow with match time scheduled for 3:30 PM. Led by both returning starters and first year players, the Tigers point came in straight set wins. Senior Bennett Salvatora defeated Mike Carbonara 6-1, 6-0 at number two singles while freshman Kevin Goth triumphed over Jake Floyd 6-0, 6-1 at number three singles. Senior Mike Palmeri and Junior Steve Klein combined to take number one doubles over Matt Perryman and H.B. Hull, 6-2, 6-1. Rounding out the action were freshman Steve Chuirazzi and sophomore Connor Goodman who defeated Dan Ketyer and Cody Kachowski 6-2, 6-3. Match time is set for 3:30 PM. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS POUNCE ON THE PANTHERS AT SCRIMMAGE The Tigers’ Varsity Boys Tennis Team opened its pre-season schedule on the NASH courts Monday afternoon, defeating the Upper St. Clair Panthers 4-1 in a scrimmage between two perennial WPIAL contenders. Leading the way in straight set wins in all three singles matches were junior Chris Lippiello playing at #1, freshman Kevin Goth competing at #2 and junior Steve Klein rounding out the action at #3. The first doubles team of seniors Bennett Salvatora and Alex Lapiana fell in two spirited sets while the second doubles teams of junior Phil Krassenstein and freshman Steve Chuirazzi took a straight set win.
