ROWING
NA ROWING WINS TEAM POINTS AT INDOOR ERG RACE By Steven Genise The winter training season came to a spectacular close this year as North Allegheny Rowing swept the field at the Indoor Rowing Championships on March 19th. The tigers captured an astounding nine gold medals, five silver medals, and six bronze medals, taking the team points trophy with 185 points, ahead of Three Rivers Rowing, who took second place with 105. The tigers have been training indoors for almost five months now, sweating on the erg, gasping for breath over bikes, and grunting with exertion in the weight room, all in preparation for the Indoor Championships. Thirteen teams have come from all across the Pittsburgh Area, including such names as Fox Chapel, Hampton, Pine Richland, and Mt. Lebanon to test their sheer physical fitness and show what their long and monotonous winter season has given them. This race often serves as a prelude to the season ahead—and a warning to the other teams. How a crew performs here is an indication of what the others will have to face on the river in the coming months. Winning Gold for North Allegheny were Gillian Lawhead in the Girls Coxswain, Jackie Dallier in the Girls Novice, Aodhan Ridenour in the Boys Novice Lightweight, Heather Ott in the Girls Novice Lightweight, Braedon Jelinek in the Boys Novice, Jake Lennon in the Boys JV Flyweight (his first race since recovering from a back injury), John Rectenwald in the Boys JV Lightweight, and Liz Craig in the Girls Varsity Lightweight. In addition, Liz Craig set an all-time record for her event with a time of 7:49.9, as well as Gillian Lawhead setting an all-time record for her event with a time of 4:02.0. Taking the Silver medal were Lucas Macaluso in the Boys Coxswain, Allison Bostedo in the Girls Coxswain, Meghan Mahoney in the Girls Novice, David Tallman in the Boys Novice Lightweight, and Meg Sekinger in the Girls JV Flyweight. Bronze medals went to Juliana Malachin in the Girls Novice, Alyssa Cooper in the Girls Novice Flyweight, Sami McDaniel in the Girls Novice Lightweight, and Lauren Vespoli in the Girls Varsity. Steven Genise, also returning from a shoulder injury, narrowly missed the bronze medal by one second in the Boys Varsity Lightweight, and Nick Neugebauer was just edged out of the podium by Pine Richland’s Cameron Barnes by 0.6 seconds; both athletes finished with a respectable fourth place finish. The points trophy was a no-brainer, with North Allegheny out-performing twelve other teams, some with many more rowers, to take the first place win overall, a feat not accomplished in several years. They conquered the race, and dealt a stern warning to the other crews in the Pittsburgh area—this is what you’ll have to face in the spring. This is NA Rowing.
