TRACK AND FIELD MEET SUMMARIES NA FALLS JUST SHORT AT WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
2011 WPIAL BOYS TEAM TRACK & FIELD CLASS AAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA BOYS' ADVANCE TO WPIAL FINALS The North Allegheny Boys’ Track and Field team has advanced to the WPIAL Finals next week. The Tigers easily handled the competition on at the WPIAL Team Semifinals on Wednesday at Newman Stadium, defeating Knoch 99-51, Greensburg-Salem 101-49 and Moon 107.5-42.5. The WPIAL Team Finals will take place next Thursday at 2:00 pm. The Lady Tigers track squad narrowly missed out on joining the NA Boys’ at the finals. The Lady Tigers topped Moon 104-46 and Hampton 82-68, but fell to Norwin 79-71. 2011 WPIAL BOYS SEMIFINALS

BOYS SEMIFINALS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA EARNS SPLIT WITH BUTLER The North Allegheny Track and Field Team returned from Butler with a split on Thursday. The NA Boys’ defeated Butler 87.5-62.5 while the Lady Tigers fell for the first time this season, 89-61. Byrum Louco helped the Tigers boys’ squad to victory with first place finishes in the high hurdles and the 300 INT hurdles. Kyle Shivetts claimed gold in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. Senior Quinn Sliker took first in the javelin and Greg Baum was also tops in the long jump. The Lady Tigers were paced by Katie Mitchell who took first place in the javelin throw. Zoe Calabrese was first in the triple jump competition and Taylor Yarshen grabbed first place in the pole vault. North Allegheny will return to action on Wednesday, May 4th at the WPIAL Team semi-finals. The meet gets underway at 3:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SHALER, PINE-RICHLAND NO MATCH FOR TIGERS TRACK TEAM The North Allegheny Track and Field teams disposed of both Shaler and Pine-Richland on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. The NA Boys rolled over Rams, 120-30, and the Titans, 137-13. The Lady Tigers handled Pine-Richland, 130-20, and outlasted the Titans, 88-62. Against Shaler, senior Halie Carter was impressive by winning first place in the 100 meter dash, 400 meter dash and 800 meter run. Rachel Wall claimed first in the shot put competition and Alex Gambill took gold in the 1600 meter run. For the NA Boys, Kyle Shivetts earned first place finishes in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. Sam Bojarski netted the top spot in the 1600 meter run, senior Ryan Stein took first in the 300 INT hurdles and Ryan Gil won first place in the 3200 meter run. In the blowout over Pine-Richland, Tiger runners dominated with a bevy of first place finishes. Among them for the Lady Tigers, junior Karissa Manko won the 200 meter dash, Halley Bayer won the 3200 meter run and Taylor Yarhsen took the long jump and pole vault competitions. For the NA Boys, Vincent Tonzo won the 800 meter run, Duke Lundahl had the most distance in the discuss throw and senior Trevor Coyne won the pole vault competition. The Tigers varsity track team will be in action again on Wednesday, April 27 when NA visits Butler for a tough section battle. The meet gets underway at 3:30 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS MAINTAIN DOMINANCE, DEFEAT SENECA VALLEY Thursday afternoon North Allegheny track and field handily defeated yet another section rival. This time, the victim was Seneca Valley, as both the boys and girls track teams defeated the Raiders by identical 95-55 scores. For the boys, Byrum Louco took first in the high hurdles, 300 meter intermediate hurdles, and was part of the winning 4x100 meter relay team. Louco's relay teammate, Kyle Shivetts, again was the fastest in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. Sophomore jumper Greg Baum was another multiple winner, capturing first place in the long jump and triple jump. Several Lady Tigers also had a strong meet, including Halie Carter, winning the 100, 200, and 400 meters. Carter was also part of the victorious 4 x 400 relay team, along with Emma Harvey, Eleni Mermigas, and Karissa Manko. Full results of the meet will be available soon. The track teams return to action next Tuesday, April 19, in a tri-meet with Pine-Richland and Shaler. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA CONTINUES ROLL WITH IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE AGAINST FOX CHAPEL The Tigers crushed Fox Chapel on Tuesday afternoon for their second straight section win and third victory on the season. The NA Boys' manhandled the Foxes 128-22. The Lady Tigers also won big, downing Fox Chapel 119-31. Senior Peter Howard turned in a tremendous performance, winning first place in the javelin throw, discus throw and shot put. Sophomore Greg Baum also had a good day, taking first place in the long jump and high jump. Nicholas Gigliotti claimed first in the 400 meter dash while Kyle Shivetts captured first place in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash. Junor Lizzie Appleton earned first place in the 1600 meter run for the Lady Tigers. Junior Karissa Manko was tops in the 200 meter dash, while freshman Emma Harvey claimed first place in the 300 int hurdles. The Lady Tigers also earned first in the 4 x 800 relay, 4 x 100 relay and the 4 x 400 relay. The Tiger teams will try to keep things going in their next meet on Tuesday, April 12 at Seneca Valley. SECTION MEET North Allegheny raced to their first section victory on a chilly Friday afternoon over the North Hills Indians. The NA Boys’ trounced North Hills 110-40 while the Lady Tigers edged past the Indians 79-71. With a 70 point margin of victory, the NA Boys’ took first place in most of the competitions on the day. Senior Ryan Stein earned first place in the High Hurdles, Ryan Gil captured the 1600 Meter Run, Vincent Tonzo laid claim to the 800 Meter Run, junior Alexander Zagorski earned first in the High Jump, and Kyle Shivetts took first in the 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash. For the Lady Tigers, Sophomore Cassidy Foulk once again captured first place in the High Hurdles, Katie Mitchell claimed the Javelin Throw, junior Chrissy Figan won the High Jump competition, and senior Taylor Yarshen earned first in the Long Jump and Pole Vault. The Tiger teams will be in action again Tuesday at home against Fox Chapel. The meet is slated to start at 3:30 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA EASILY HANDLES VILLA MARIA, ERIE CATHEDRAL PREP IN OPENING MEET North Allegheny dominated their first tri-meet of the spring on Tuesday, with the NA Boys' topping Erie Cathedral Prep 101-49 and the Lady Tigers running away from Villa Maria in a landslide victory, 141-9. With such large margins of victory, the Tigers had a bevy of first place finishers on the day. Among the top finisher for the boys, senior Ryan Gil took the 1600 Meter Run, Byrum Louco captured first in the 300 Int Hurdles, junior Logan Steiner earned first place in the 3200 Meter Run, and Kyle Shivetts claimed first place in the 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash. The Lady Tigers saw Cassie Foulk take the High Hurdles, sophomore Alex Gambill captured the 1600 Meter Run, Zoe Calabrese claimed first place in the Triple Jump, and Halie Carter earned first in the 400 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash. Both Tigers squads captured first place in the 4 x 800 Relay, 4 x 100 Relay, and the 4 x 400 Relay. North Allegheny will look to ride thier momentum into their next meet as the Tigers face section rival North Hills on Friday afternoon. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS SHINE AT SOUTH HILLS INVITATIONAL The North Allegheny Track and Field team began the spring season with a tremendous showing at the South Hills Classic at Baldwin High School this weekend. Numerous different Tiger runners claimed first place at the meet, featuring quality competition throughout the WPIAL. For the Lady Tigers, senior Halie Carter finished first (2:21.32) in the 800 Meters, followed by teammate Lizzie Appleton (2:25.23) who took third. In the Girls 3200 Meters, Alena Greco (12:20.97) earned first place and Halley Bayer (12:27.52) was right behind Greco to earn silver. The Lady Tigers 4 x 400 Relay combo also claimed first place with a time of 4:23.20. Senior Taylor Yarshen took third place in the Long Jump competition (16’1”) and second place in the Pole Vault (10’ 0”). First place finishers for the NA Boys included Kyle Shivetts in the 200 Meters (22.68), Ryan Gil in the 1600 Meters (4:27.51), Byrum Louco in the Intermediate Hurdles (40.30), and the Tigers 4 x 400 Relay combo (3:33.52). Other notes, Sam Bojarski took second place in the 1600 Meters (4:33.84), finishing right behind Gil in that competition. In the Long Jump, Greg Baum took third place (20’1”). The NA Track and Field team will be in action again on Tuesday with a home meet against Erie Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria at 4:30 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Any questions or comments should be
