WPIAL BOYS GOLF – 2002

The Tigers will compete again in Division I, along with 59 other teams this year.  The top two teams and ties for second place in each section will enter the team competition semi-finals on October 15, 2002.  If two teams tie for second place but one of the teams has lost both head to head contests, that team will not enter the tournament round.  Three way ties will be broken in the following manner:

1.       Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.

2.       The team that has the best numerical record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.

3.       If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.

The format for boys’ golf is a team comprised of six golfers who play for a combined team total medal score for the day.  Only the top five scores will count to determine the team winner for the match.  This format is in effect for all team matches.

In case of a tie in total medal score, the medallists for both teams will play “sudden death” extra holes.  If there are co-medallists on either team, the coach will select one of them to compete in the tie-breaker.

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The WPIAL individual championships will begin with a sectional qualifying tournament comprised of five players from each section team.  Each section qualifier will be hosed at one of the section courses.  The 2002 section qualifiers have been scheduled for Monday, September 23, 2002.  The top ten players from each sectional tournament will advance to the semi-final round.

The semi-final round will consist of one hundred sixty contestants – ten qualifiers form each of the sixteen sectional tournaments.  The semi-final round will be conducted on Monday, September 30, 2002 at four different courses.  Forty contestants, ten per section, will be assigned to each semi-final site.

The individual final round will consist of forty contestants – the top ten from each semi-final round site.  The final round will be held on Monday, October 7, 2002, at a course to be designated.

The top sixteen contestants from the WPIAL Final Round will qualify for the PIAA Championship Tournament to be held at Heritage Hill Golf Course (York, PA) on October 21-22, 2002.
