Tigers compete at PIAA West Regional

The North Allegheny girls wrestling team had three individuals competing in the PIAA West Regional held at North Allegheny on Saturday.
Lorelei Bungard had the best day going 2-2 and finishing in sixth-place. Bungard started the day with a first round pin over Kylee Junk of Sharpsville. After falling in the quarterfinals, Bungard bounced back to pin District 10 Champion, Kaelon Connolly of Warren, before dropping her final match to Kona Kuzma of Corry Area in the consolation semifinals. Bungard would finish one win short of qualifying for the PIAA State Tournament.
Carly O’Connell and Maya Scott also competed in the tournament.

The PIAA West Regional concludes the season for the North Allegheny girls wrestling team. The Tigers finished the year with a 8-6 dual record along with a third-place finish at the Ram Slam Tournament at Pine-Richland, a seventh-place finish at the Mid-Winter Mayhem and a 10th place finish at the North Allegheny Invitational. Congrats to head coach Dan Heckert along with all wrestlers and staff on a great season!
Four Tigers make podium at WPIAL Championships; Heckert named WPIAL Coach of the Year

The North Allegheny girls wrestling team was in the comfort of their own home at UPMC Court for the WPIAL Girls Wrestling Individual Championships on Saturday. The Tigers had four girls finish in the top six with Lorelei Bungard and Maya Scott both coming in sixth place while Carly O’Connell finished in fifth. Sophia Folks had the best day for NA getting to the finals before falling in overtime.
Folks had a great start to the day picking up wins by fall in the first round, quarterfinals and semifinals. For the second straight year, North Allegheny had a girl in the WPIAL Championship at 155 pounds. It was a battle that needed more than six minutes, but Folks ultimately fell to Karsyn Champion of Norwin 11-8 in overtime to secure WPIAL silver.
O’Connell had a similar start to her day picking up quick pins in the first round and quarterfinals. She fell in the semifinals and consolation semifinals before winning the fifth-place match over Taylor Chambers of Southmoreland.
Bungard won by tech fall in her first-round matchup before losing by decision in the quarterfinals. Bungard fought through the consolation bracket going 2-1 with two pins, before falling by an 11-9 decision to Lauren Bachman of Fox Chapel, to finish in sixth place.
Scott won her first-round bout in 1:19 before dropping a 6-2 decision in the quarterfinals. Scott would also go 2-1 in the consolation bracket before getting tripped up by Kaylee Flowers from New Castle in the fifth-place match.
Heidi Radford had a 2-2 day for the Tigers. Alex Gosnell, Aleigha Revelent and Anna Kovacic went 1-2 on the day. Shanmukha Gannavaram, Ava Anthony and Anna Svoboda also participated.

Postseason awards were also handed out at the WPIAL Individual Championships and North Allegheny head coach Dan Heckert was named the WPIAL Girls Wrestling Coach of the Year for the second season in a row. He is pictured with Connellsville’s Jeremiah Bossart who was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.
With the top five automatically qualifying for the PIAA West Regional tournament, Folks and O’Connell advance. Bungard and Scott await word from the WPIAL to see if they advance via the wild card. The PIAA West Regional will be held on Saturday, March 1 at UPMC Court.
Tigers place 10th at NA Invitational

The North Allegheny girls’ wrestling team hosted a 33-team field that had 250 girls from seven of the twelve PIAA districts compete on Saturday. The field included three of the top 10 and seven of the top 25 ranked teams in the state, including #1 ranked Cumberland Valley. There were over 25 girls that held state rankings that competed. The Lady Tigers were paced by two fourth place finishers and finished in 10th place as a team.
Senior Maya Scott (148) posted falls in her first two matches before losing to #4 State ranked Eve Kurtz of Pine Grove in the semifinals. Scott lost her final bout to Kendra O’Brien of Cumberland Valley to finish in fourth place.
Freshman Carly O’Connell (112) joined Scott in the semifinals as well. She picked up a fall in her first match. In O’Connell’s quarterfinal match, she faced #3 WPIAL ranked Rhiana Tolliver of Ringgold, and used a second period turn to pick up the fall to advance to the semifinals. She would drop her semifinal match to returning PIAA placewinner Trinity Moore of Connellsville. O’Connell would then fall to Emma Spencer of Saegertown in her final match to finish fourth.
Sophomore Lorelei Bungard (136) won her first match by fall before losing to Tessa Queen of Curwensville. Bungard would then secure falls in her next two matches to advance to the fifth place match. Bungard picked up a second period fall against Pine Grove’s Samantha Eisenhauer to place fifth and finish 4-1 on the day.
Sophomore Alex Gosnell (235) started her day off with a second period fall before dropping her second match to #2 State Ranked and returning PIAA runner-up Mackenna Atkinson of Souderton. Gosnell would win her next match by fall before losing to Saegertown’s Kaylee Stampin-Williams. She would then pick up a third period fall against Souderton’s Awur Mayom to finish 3-2 and place seventh.
Juniors Anna Kovacic (118), Ava Anthony (142), Ava Frailey (155) and sophomore Aleigha Revelant (124) all picked up wins for the Lady Tigers. Also competing were sophomores Anna Svoboda (130), Izabella Harrison (136), Shanmukha Gannavaram (170) and freshman Alexis Hartshorn (130).

Tigers fall to Saegertown on Criteria

North Allegheny traveled to Saegertown High School to take part in their final dual match of the season. It was an evenly matched dual all night and the teams actually finished the match tied 33-33. Saegertown won the dual on Criteria E (most six-point wins) to take down the Tigers 34-33.
Ava Frailey won by forfeit and Sophia Folks won by tech fall to give NA the early 11-0 lead. Saegertown won the next three bouts to take a 15-11 lead. Carly O’Connell would give the Tigers the lead back with a pin to make the score 17-15. Momentum continued to shift as Saegertown won the 118 match to take the lead back at 21-17. Aleigha Revelent won her bout by major decision to tie the score 21-21. Saegertown would get a pin at 130 but Lorelei Bungard responded with a pin of her own and the score remained tied 27-27. After another Saegertown pin, Maya Scott won by forfeit to make the score 33-33. Saegertown was named the winner of the dual due to more six-point wins and the Tigers ultimately fell 34-33.
North Allegheny finishes the dual part of their schedule with an 8-6 record. The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday when they host the North Allegheny Invitational at UPMC Court. Wrestling will begin at 9:00 a.m. This is their last event before the WPIAL Individual Championships.

Tigers tame Tornado, 36-30

The Lady Tigers traveled on the road for the first time this season as they traveled north to take on the Butler Golden Tornado on Wednesday night.
The dual meet started at 118 where Butler’s Brin Zehmisch picked up a first period fall to give the Golden Tornado a 6-0 lead. North Allegheny responded with a fall from Aleigha Revelant in 56 seconds to tie the score 6-6. Anna Svoboda picked up a forfeit at 130 to give the Tigers a 12-6 lead. Butler won the next two matches by fall to take the lead 18-12. Maya Scott would then bring the dual back to another tie score, 18-18, after she pinned Mylee Toner in 2:29. Sophia Folks and Ava Frailey would pick up forfeits at 155 and 170 to retake the lead 30-18. At 190, Olivia Hageman would get the second period fall to bring the Golden Tornado within six. Alex Gosnell would take the mat for the Lady Tigers at 235. She would be the last match for North Allegheny as there would be double forfeits at 100 and 112 and Butler would be receiving a forfeit at 106. This made 235 a must win for the Lady Tigers. Gosnell would start off the scoring with a takedown, but Butler’s Monica Osborne would score a late first period reversal to make it 3-2 after one period. Gosnell wasted no time in the second period and picked up the fall in 2:16 and locked up the 36-30 win for the Tigers. For her win, Gosnell was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match for clinching the dual.
North Allegheny improves to 8-5 overall. The Tigers return to action next Wednesday, January 29, when they travel to Saegertown for a 7:00 PM match for their final dual of the year.

Girls Wrestling takes 11th at Sharpsville Tournament

North Allegheny traveled to Sharpsville High School on Saturday to take part in the Sharpsville Tournament. The Tigers had a fourth-place finisher, two fifth-place finishers along with a sixth place finish. With all of that, NA finished in 11th place as a team in the tournament out of 32 teams.
Alex Gosnell made the deepest run for North Allegheny coming in fourth place. Starting in the quarterfinals, Gosnell would drop her first match before bouncing back to defeat Sophia Wilson of Mentor (OH) 3-0 in the consolation semifinals. Gosnell would face off with Zahara Al-Zamly in the third place match, where she would fall by decision to end up in fourth place.
Maya Scott and Heidi Radford finished the day in fifth place in their respective weight classes.
Scott got the day going by defeating Cecilia Ward of Sharpsville by major decision. Scott would fall in the semifinals and consolation semifinals before meeting Ward again in the fifth place match, where Scott won again, this time by a score of 6-3.
Radford got a pin in her quarterfinal match before dropping a 2-0 decision in the semifinals. Radford would fall in the consolation semifinals before winning by injury default in the fifth place match.
Ava Anthony was a sixth-place finisher for the Tigers. Anthony won by fall in her first two matches before being defeated in the semifinals and consolation semifinals. Anthony would take on Carma Forty of Knoch in the fifth place match where she fell 7-0 to end up in sixth place.
Lorelei Bungard ended up in eighth place on the day. Bungard had a very high scoring opening match defeating Olivia Chase of Conneaut (OH) 17-14. Bungard would fall in the quarterfinals before going 1-1 in the consolation bracket to get to the seventh place match. Bungard would see Chase again, but Chase would get the better of Bungard this time, putting her in eighth place.
Shanmukha Gannavaram, Alexis Hartshorn, Aleigha Revelent and Carly O’Connell all picked up wins for the Tigers.

North Allegheny returns to action on Wednesday when they head to Butler to take on the Golden Tornado at 6:00 p.m. This match will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
Senior Maya Scott clinches match for Tigers on Senior Night

The North Allegheny girls’ wrestling team hosted the Seneca Valley Raiders on Wednesday night at UPMC Court. The match was back-and-forth all night, but the Tigers came back from a 33-30 deficit to defeat the Raiders 42-33 on Senior Night.
Starting at 155 lbs, Seneca Valley won the first two matches and jumped out to a 9-0 lead. NA got on the board when Alex Gosnell won by fall to cut the deficit to 9-6. The Raiders won the next three bouts by forfeit to expand the lead to 27-6. North Allegheny won the next three matches as Carly O’Connell won by fall, Anna Kovacic won by forfeit and Aleigha Revelent also won by fall trimming the score to 27-24. Seneca Valley earned a pin to make the score 33-24 leaving the Tigers little margin for error. Lorelei Bungard won by forfeit and Ava Anthony got a pin to give the Tigers their first lead of the night 36-33. As if it was scripted, it all came down to the final match. North Allegheny looked to their lone senior Maya Scott, who got the job done winning by fall, and the Tigers came away with a 42-33 victory.
Scott was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match for clinching the duel on senior night,
North Allegheny improves to 7-5 overall. The Tigers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Sharpsville High School to take part in the Sharpsville Tournament. Wrestling will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Girls Wrestling places seventh at Mid-Winter Mayhem; Bungard finishes runner-up

North Allegheny Lady Tigers traveled to the Kovalchick Convention & Athletic Complex at Indiana University of Pennsylvania to compete at the Mid-Winter Mayhem Girls Tournament on Saturday. The Tigers placed seventh out of 36 teams, led by sophomore Lorelei Bungard’s runner-up finish at 136 pounds.
Bungard started the tournament facing second-seeded Kalea Dey of Chestnut Ridge. She upset Dey in dominating fashion with a 16-3 major decision. In her quarterfinal match, Bungard built a commanding 15-2 lead over Kelsie Nesbitt of Plum before securing the fall in 3:21. In the semifinals, Bungard would face eventual third-place finisher Briella Walk of Montgomery. After surrendering the opening takedown, Bungard scored nine unanswered points to lead 9-3 after one period. Walk charged back to make it 9-7 early in the second period before Bungard broke it open for good with eight more unanswered points to build a 17-7 lead. She picked up another major decision, winning 23-9. The win advanced Bungard to the final against #1 seed and #2 state-ranked Ava Golding from Kiski. Bungard would lose by fall to Golding in the championship match
Freshman Carly O’Connell (112), sophomore Aleigha Revelant (124), and senior Maya Scott (148) all turned in great performances, going 3-2 with 2 falls. Juniors Anna Kovacic (118), Ava Anthony (142), Ava Frailey (170), and Sophia Folks (155) all went 2-2 on the day.
Sophomores Alex Gosnell (235) and Izabella Harrison (142) and freshman Alexis Hartshorn (136) all picked up a win for the Lady Tigers. Also competing were sophomores Anna Svoboda (130) and Shanmukha Gannavaram (170).

Girls Wrestling takes third at NA Duals

The North Allegheny girls wrestling team hosted the North Allegheny Duals on Saturday morning at UPMC Court. The Tigers would drop their opening match but fight back to get into the third place match where they defeated Seneca Valley, 45-30 to claim the third place finish.
After getting a bye in the quarterfinals, North Allegheny took on eventual champion Sharpsville in the semifinals. After falling behind 12-0 due to forfeits. Carly O’Connell got the Tigers on the board to make the score 12-6. Sharpsville would win the next three bouts before Lorelei Bungard picked up a win by fall. Trailing 36-12, the Tigers would try to make a push getting four straight wins from Maya Scott (decision), Ava Frailey (forfeit), Sophia Folks (pin) and Alex Gosnell (pin) to make the score 36-33 but a forfeit to end the match gave Sharpsville the 42-33 victory.

In the consolation semifinals, NA battled Upper St. Clair. O’Connell and Anna Kovacic picked up pins to give North Allegheny the early 12-6 lead. Aleigha Revelent won by a 7-2 decision to expand the lead to 15-6. Bungard won by fall in 1:09 to make the score 21-10. With the score still in the balance at 21-16, North Allegheny put the match away getting four straight pins from Scott, Folks, Frailey and Gosnell to explode to a 45-16 lead. Shanmukha Gannavaram picked up the forfeit win and the Tigers rolled to a 51-22 triumph.

For the final match of the day, the Tigers faced off with Seneca Valley for third place. NA would jump out to a 15-0 lead getting a decision win from O’Connell, a forfeit win from Kovacic and a pin from Revelent. Once again, North Allegheny would get four straight wins to expand the lead, this time from Bungard, Ava Anthony, Scott and Folks to take a commanding 39-6 lead. Alex Gosnell would get a pin in 1:43 to finish off the 45-30 win for the Tigers.
