Brynn Serbin Named OAC Player of the Year, D3 Hoops Region 7 Player of the Year

Brynn Serbin (North Allegheny, 2019) led her basketball team, the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears, to the 2022-2023 Ohio Athletic Conference (D-III) regular season championship, and the conference tournament championship as well.  Brynn, a 5’5” senior point guard, led the conference in assists, steals and assist-to-turnover ratio.  She was second in the league in scoring and 3-pt. field goals, as well as sixth in free-throw percentage and eighth in rebounding.  She was named the OAC Player of the Year, and the Defensive Player of the Year. Additionally, Serbin was tabbed the D3Hoops Region 7 Player of the Year and named to the publication’s First-Team All-Region squad. She set the ONU season record for both assists and steals this season, and also became the career leader in steals.  Serbin was previously named the OAC Freshman of the Year, and has been named All-Conference all four years. 

In the semifinal game of the conference tournament, Brynn hit two free throws with five seconds left and her team down by one to secure the one-point victory.  In the championship game, she had 19 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the 60-45 victory, and was named the tournament MVP.

In the NCAA D-III tournament, Brynn led ONU to a 1st-round victory over Berea (Ky), 54-43.  She scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, totaling a game-high 16, along with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.  The following night the Polar Bears beat Wisconsin – Oshkosh, 71 – 60 behind Brynn’s game-high 19 points, along with seven rebounds, nine assists and two steals while battling the opponent’s box-and-one defense.  ONU’s season came to an end in the Sweet Sixteen against No. 2 nationally-ranked Transylvania. 

At North Allegheny, Serbin was a four-year contributor and helped the Tigers to a record of 105-11 during her tenure with the team. Those 105 wins included two WPIAL championships (2017, 2018), two WPIAL runners-up (2016, 2019) and one PIAA championship game appearance (2017). A tenacious defender and slick ball handler, Serbin was named First Team All-Section by the Big 56 conference her senior season before continuing her outstanding basketball and academic career at Ohio Northern.
