After a blazing-hot month of May in AAA Tacoma, former Tiger and Mariners number three-rated prospect Cole Young made his Major League debut Saturday.

The 21st overall selection in the 2022 MLB Draft was batting .277 in AAA with 26 RBI, 39 runs, 57 hits, five home runs and four stolen bases. Mariners manager Dan Wilson spoke highly about Young before his debut.

Young started at second base for Seattle, which hosted the Minnesota Twins at T-Mobile Park. The former first-round pick’s family was in attendance for the moment.

Young is the second-fastest WPIAL player drafted in the first round out of high school to make the majors, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Mike White.

Young was able to reach base on a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. He was also able to record multiple outs in the field and was on the receiving end of an integral double play in the eighth inning.

His first Major League hit came in the bottom of the ninth inning, which started a rally for the Mariners.

Young came up clutch in the bottom of the 11th inning, grounding into a fielder’s choice that scored Miles Mastrobuoni to win the game for Seattle.

Young is the first player in Mariners history with a walk-off plate appearance in his MLB debut.
