The North Allegheny girls’ flag football squads were in action on Sunday and came away with a doubleheader sweep. The NA Varsity Gold team rolled to a 36-0 victory over Seneca Valley, while the NA Varsity Black team defeated North Hills, 30-6. Both games were held at Shaler High School Stadium.

For the Varsity Gold team, scoring touchdowns for the Tigers were senior Ally Ruiz (2), sophomore Maddie Williams (2), senior Shauna Maenza and senior Rylee Johnston. A two-point conversion was scored by senior Mia Fratto. Fratto also stepped in at quarterback in the absence of senior Kyra Schmidt and tossed a pair of second half touchdown passes. Schmidt also went to work in the passing game, connecting with several open receivers to advance the ball into Raiders territory. Defensively, the Tigers resembled the Steel Curtain defense by pitching their second consecutive shutout. Johnson, Maenza and senior Maddie Hartung applied pressure with numerous tackles, while Ruiz, Williams and senior Nat Rak punished the opposing passing game.

The NA Varsity Black team was also triumphant. Freshmen Chloe Gauntner and Rosalia Varlotta led the team in touchdowns to give the Tigers an offensive boost. Freshman Taryn DeWitt threw three touchdown passes and also saw time at receiver, hauling in three receptions. Freshman quarterback Sloane Baker completed five passes to open receivers to advance the ball into Indians territory. Sophomores Karaline Barone and Danika Hogan came up big with several crucial third-down tackles in the first and second half, respectively. Gauntner also had a few tackles and deflections to deny the North Hills offense. Varlotta contributed a pick-six late in the second half to seal the win.

On the season, NA Varsity Gold leaps to 3-0 overall and NA Varsity Black improves to 1-1. Both teams play next Sunday at North Hills.
