LADY TIGER RALLY TOPS SENECA VALLEY, 12-11

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers scored a pair of goals late in the second half to down rival Seneca Valley, 12-11, in the section finale at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Senior attack Emma Luitgaarden scored five goals, including the game winner, to pace NA with sophomore Carly Luitgaarden adding a pair of tallies for the winning Lady Tigers.

Earlier in the first half, Emma Luitgaarden scored a pair of goals to give NA a 2-0 lead just 2:32 into the contest.  Senior Maddie Saldana came out from behind the net to score and give the Lady Tigers a 3-0 advantage at the 5:13 mark.  Taylor Mayeda answered for the Raiders from in front of the net, but junior Kellie Roach cut across the middle and scored to make it 4-1.  Emma completed her hat trick on a long assist from senior Amy Rosenzweig to extend the margin to 5-1 with 13:11 remaining in the half.  Seneca Valley regrouped, however, to score five straight goals and take the lead.  Turnovers were key to the rally with Ashley Argyros stealing the ball and scoring and Megan Powell converting from in front of the net after a turnover to cut the lead to 5-2.  Senior co-captain Nicole Roche then took over for the Raiders and scored three straight goals to give SV a 6-5 advantage at the intermission.

The Luitgaarden sisters struck early in the second half to regain the lead for NA.  At the 38 second mark, Carly found Emma open in front of the net and the Tiger senior tied the game at 6-6.  At the 3:04 mark, Carly broke free in the middle to score and give NA a 7-6 lead.  Midkiff answered with a steal and score to tie the game at 7-7 just 4:20 into the half.  Emma found Carly open in front of the net and the sophomore scored her second of the game to put the Lady Tigers back ahead, 8-7.  Roche came back with a run down the middle to tie the contest at 8-8 with 16:38 remaining in the game.  Sophomore Jessica Partridge came off the bench to give NA the lead again at 9-8 with a good move from behind the goal.  Once again, the Raiders answered with Jen Cwik coming down the middle to tie the game at 9-9.  Freshman Carley Thieret put NA back on top with a nice run across the middle to score with the left-handed shot.  The Lady Tigers had a 10-9 lead with 12:35 left.  The Raiders were not finished, however, as Ally Zezinka scored from the middle and Midkiff added a free position tally to give SV an 11-10 lead with 10:58 left.  NA Coach Matt McCarthy called a time out and it paid off as the Raiders would not score again.  With 8:36 remaining, junior Talia Waskowicz raced down the right side and launched a hard shot into the left corner to tie the game.  Just eight seconds later, Waskowicz set up Emma Luitgaarden for what proved to be the game winner.  Down the stretch, the Raiders had several good scoring chances, but sophomore goalie Nia Parillo came through with big saves to preserve the win.

It was a good team effort by the Lady Tigers who got contributions from a number of players in the victory.  It was senior Emma Luitgaarden who came through with the shot that won the game and for her efforts the North Allegheny Sports Network named Emma as the Player of the Game.

With the win, NA finished section play with a record of 2-8 and fifth place.  The win was the second straight for the Lady Tigers after a 19-15 non-section win on Monday night.  The overall mark improved to 5-12 with a non-section contest with Latrobe tomorrow night the last game on the schedule.

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After taking a 5-4 lead at halftime, the Lady Tigers saw Oakland Catholic explode for 11 second half goals on their way to a 15-10 victory at Newman Stadium on Thursday night.  Junior Talia Waskowicz led the Lady Tigers with four goals while senior Emma and sophomore Carly Luitgaarden had a pair of goals each.

Oakland Catholic won the opening draw and controlled play early to take a 2-0 lead on goals by Cate Linden and Maddie DiFiore.  The Lady Tigers did not get a shot at the Eagle net until 10:17 into the contest.  Carly Luitgaarden came out from behind the net to score with 12:14 left to cut the lead to 2-1.  OC responded with goals by Brighid Kelly and DiFiore to take a 4-1 lead with 6:34 remaining in the half.  The Lady Tigers answered with four straight goals to take the lead.  Carly Luitgaarden connected on a sidearm shot after a long run down the middle to make it 4-2.  Waskowicz was able to score on a pair of free position shots to tie the game at 4-4 with 43 seconds remaining.  Emma Luitgaarden took a long pass from senior Maddie Saldana and scored to give NA a 5-4 lead with just 20 seconds left.  The Lady Tigers took a 5-4 lead to the intermission.

The Eagles came out strong in the second half controlling the draws and maintaining ball control in a possession offense.  It paid off for OC as they scored five straight goals in the first 5:41 of the half to take a 9-5 lead.  Madeline Fitzgerald, DiFiore, Cate Linden and Hannah Linden with a pair scored during the run.  NA came back with a pair of goals with Waskowicz racing down the middle to score and junior Brenna Curti adding a tally from in front of the net to cut the margin to 9-7 with 15:54 remaining in the game.  It was as close as NA would get as the Eagles scored the next four to take a commanding 13-7 advantage.  Curti made a nice move circling from behind the net to score her second of the game to cut it to 13-8, but Hannah Linden answered with her fifth of the game, all in the second half, to restore the six-goal lead at 14-8.  Waskowicz made a nice run down the middle and put her fourth goal in the net to cut the margin to 14-9.  Emma Luitgaarden blasted in a left handed shot after coming out from behind the net to cut it to 14-10 with 2:54 left.  Cate Linden put the finishing touches on the Oakland Catholic victory with her third of the game with just 59 seconds remaining.  The Eagles took home a 15-10 win at Newman Stadium.

WPIAL GIRLS' LACROSSE - 2009

The Lady Tigers will be playing again in the WPIAL along with 28 other teams.  A WPIAL section plaque will be awarded to each of the section winners.  Those winners will be the teams who have the best record against all schools in their section.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and each will be declared co-champions and will receive a section winner's plaque.  All ties in section record will be broken by head-to-head competition.

The top four teams in each section will enter the WPIAL tournament.  Teams that qualify for the WPIAL tournament may not play games after May 13, 2009 but may scrimmage any team that has qualified for, and remains alive in the WPIAL tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/lost record.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive a section winner's plaques, and will be entered into the WPIAL tournament.  The top 2 teams from each section will play at home in the first round of the playoffs.

In the event of a multiple team (two or more teams) tie for a playoff position head-to-head competition will bee the first determinant.  If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used.  If three or more teams are tied for third place and the tie breaking system identifies one team as the third place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for fourth place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the fourth place team.  If a tie cannot be broken all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

TIE-BREAKING SYSTEM

a.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
b.  The team(s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
c.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

Teams that qualify for the tournament should be aware that they may be placed in a preliminary round and may be assigned to play beginning on Thursday, May 14, 2009.  Section winners and second place finishers will be awarded home games in the first round with the third and fourth place teams playing away.  In the event of a tie for first and/or second place the WPIAL will determine the home site assignment based on availability and suitability.

Teams should be aware that PIAA tournament entry is reserved for Division I teams.  The WPIAL, however, will crown a Division I and II Champion.  PIAA bracket placement will be determined on a "Follow the Winner" basis.
