Former North Allegheny football standout Mack Leftwich is leaving his mark on yet another football program, this time in the Power Four Division I ranks.

After two successful seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Texas State, Leftwich was hired by Texas Tech to fill the same position in early December of last year. Leftwich was a two-time Broyles Award nominee with the Bobcats. The accolade is an annual honor given to the best assistant coach in college football.

This season, the Red Raiders have boasted a 12-1 overall record while 8-1 in the Big 12. The lone loss on the season was on the road against Arizona State in October. Texas Tech is currently 3rd in the nation in scoring with 42.5 points per game and 5th in the nation in yards per game, averaging 480.3. The Raiders are also 2nd in total yards through 13 games with 6,244.

Texas Tech is coming off a 34-7 win over BYU in the Big 12 Championship Game this past weekend. It was the program’s first conference championship since 1955 when they were members of the Southwest Conference.  The Red Raiders earned the 4th seed in the College Football Playoff bracket and will have a bye in the first round.

Texas Tech is set to play in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day at noon against the winner of #5 Oregon and #12 James Madison. If Oregon advances, his younger brother, Cutter, will be on the opposite sideline, as he serves as the Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator for the Ducks.

At North Allegheny, Leftwich was a two-year starter at quarterback and led the Tigers to a PIAA championship in 2012 and back-to-back WPIAL crowns in 2011 and 2012. The 2012 team was inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame in early January of this year.  As a senior, Leftwich was named the Quad-A State Player of the Year by the Pennsylvania Sports Writers. Leftwich, one the most prolific passers in North Allegheny history, became only the third quarterback in WPIAL history in 2012 to throw for over 3,000 yards in a single season. For his career, Leftwich amassed over 7,000 yards of total offense, along with 91 total touchdowns (65 passing, 26 rushing.)

Following his collegiate playing days at UTEP, Leftwich has risen up the coaching ranks and has very quickly become one of the more respected offensive minds in college football.
