Alex Gosnell advances to PIAA Individual Championships
North Allegheny had three wrestlers compete in the PIAA West Regionals at Mt. Lebanon on Saturday. Alex Gosnell finished in fourth place, punching her ticket to the PIAA Individual Championships. Gosnell is the second girl in NA Girls Wrestling history to qualify for the PIAA Tournament. She joins Leyna Rumpler as the only two girls to reach Hershey.
Gosnell dropped her opening match by 6-0 decision. She would fight through the consolation bracket pinning Karlyn Brown from Corry Area, Canon-McMillan’s London Ellis and Elizabeth Kantoris of Latrobe to get to the third-place match. Gosnell would fall to Kaylee Stampin-Williams from Saegertown to finish in fourth place.
Carly O’Connell picked up a win on the day.

Three Tigers advance to PIAA West Regional
North Allegheny traveled to Mt. Lebanon High School on Saturday morning to take part in the WPIAL Individual Championships. The Tigers had three girls advance to the PIAA West Regional as Addison Urschler and Alex Gosnell each finished in third place while Carly O’Connell had a fourth place finish.
Urschler won her first two matches by fall before being tripped up in the semifinals against Karsyn Champion of Norwin. Urschler would take on Olivia Shultz of Connellsville in the consolation semifinals. This would be their third meeting this year, having split the first two matches against each other. Urschler set the tone and took a 3-0 lead into the second period. However, Shultz would score seven points in the second period and extend her lead to 10-5 with 37 seconds remaining. Urschler got an escape to bring the score to 10-6. She scored a takedown with 12 seconds remaining to bring her within one point of Shultz. With only two seconds remaining, Urschler was able to put Shultz in near fall criteria and was awarded two points as time expired to win 11-10. The dramatic win advanced Urschler to the third-place match. In the third-place match, Urschler pinned Canon-McMillan’s Kadence Merigo to clinch the bronze medal.
Gosnell got a bye to the quarterfinals where she won by pin before falling to Jenna Chapman of Albert Gallatin in the semifinals. Gosnell met Monica Osborne of Butler for the fourth time this year in the consolation semifinals. After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, she was trailing Osborne 7-3 with 30 seconds left in the match. Gosnell was able to get an escape and then a takedown with nine seconds left in regulation to force overtime. She only needed 12 seconds in overtime to secure a takedown and win 10-7 to advance to the third-place match. Gosnell claimed a 7-0 win over Latrobe’s Elizabeth Kantoris in the third-place match.
O’Connell won by fall to open her tournament before losing to Kaila Keesecker from Derry in the quarterfinals. She bounced back with a 6-2 win and a 7-1 win in the consolation bracket to get to the consolation semifinals. O’Connell faced off against Mia Scalise in a rematch of the finals from the North Allegheny Invitational where Scalise won 1-0. O’Connell set the tone with a second period escape, takedown and near fall to break open an 8-0 lead. She then added on two more third period takedowns to win 14-5 and advance. O’Connell fell to Knoch’s Braylee Ireland in the third-place match to finish in fourth.
Aleigha Revelant and Tapanga Bornt went 2-2 on the day. Heidi Radford, Suela Raci, Gabriella Molina, Lorelei Bungard and Sally Horton all picked up wins as well.

Urschler, Gosnell and O’Connell will return to Mt. Lebanon High School on Saturday to compete in the PIAA West Regional Tournament. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m.
Tigers win 42-35 thriller over Saegertown on Senior Night
North Allegheny hosted the Saegertown Panthers on Tuesday night at UPMC Court. In a thrilling contest that came down to the final bout, the Tigers got it done coming away with a 42-35 victory to finish the regular season.
Saegertown jumped out to a 23-0 lead winning the first four bouts of the night. Carly O’Connell won by forfeit and Aleigha Revelant won by fall at 130 pounds to make the score 23-12. The Panthers responded with a pin of their own at 136 pounds to make the score 29-12. Lorelei Bungard won by fall but another Saegertown pin kept the Panthers lead at 35-18. Mia Maxwell, Ava Frailey and Suela Raci all won by forfeit to give NA a 36-35 lead. With the match still in the balance, it came down to 235 pounds. After falling behind early, Alex Gosnell got a second period pin to give the Tigers a 42-35 victory.
With the match clincing pin over Kaylee Stampin-Williams in 2:53, Gosnell was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match.
North Allegheny finishes the regular season with a 9-6 record. The Tigers now turn their attention to the WPIAL Individual Championships that will be held at Mt. Lebanon High School on Saturday, February 21. Wrestling will begin at 9 a.m.

Girls Wrestling places third at NA Invitational
North Allegheny hosted the NA Invitational over Friday and Saturday at UPMC Court. The Tigers had five wrestlers finish in the top six for a team total of 123 points, good enough for third place. Cumberland Valley won the team title with 187.5 points.
Carly O’Connell was the top NA finisher coming in second place.
O’Connell pinned her first three opponents, all in the first period, before a 7-3 decision victory over Laney Kilgore of Sharpsville in the semifinals. In the 118-pound final, O’Connell dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Ringgold’s Mia Scalise to take home the silver medal.
Alex Gosnell was a third-place finisher over the weekend.
Receiving a bye, Gosnell won her first two matches by fall before losing a 5-3 decision to Zahara Al-Zamly of Fort LeBoeuf in the semifinals. Gosnell bounced back to pin Northampton’s Kiera Rickard in the Consolation Semifinals. In the third-place match, Gosnell made quick work of Monica Osborne from Butler to claim the bronze medal.
Tapanga Bornt and Heidi Radford each finished in fifth place.
Bornt won by pin in her first two matches before falling to Trinity Moore of Connellsville in the semifinals. After dropping a 2-0 decision to Pine-Richland’s Aeriella Ryer in the Consolation Semifinals, Bornt bounced back to pin Zoey Yohe of Penn Manor in the fifth-place match.
Radford won her opening match before dropping her match to Peters Township’s Liliana Giulianelli in the quarterfinals. Radford won her next two matches before falling to Charlotte Padalin of Shaler in the Consolation Semifinals. Radford bounced back to defeat Ravyn Cameron-Botti of Connellsville in the fifth-place match.
Sally Horton ended the weekend in sixth place.
Horton won her first three matches, all by fall, before dropping her semifinal match to Plum’s Saphia Davis. Horton would fall in the Consolation Semifinals and the fifth-place match to finish the tournament in sixth.
Kaelyn Fraley and Suela Raci went 2-2 over the weekend. Ava Frailey, Addison Urschler, Lorelei Bungard, Anna Kovacic and Izabella Harrison also picked up wins.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, February 10 when they wrap up the regular season with a home dual match against Saegertown at UPMC Court at 7 p.m. This match will be broadcast live on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
Tigers defeat Butler, 54-24
North Allegheny hosted the Butler Golden Tornado at UPMC Court on Wednesday night. The Tigers claimed three wins by fall and six forfeits to defeat Butler by a score of 54-24.
Butler got a forfeit at 100 pounds to jump out to a 6-0 lead before Kaelyn Fraley won by pin and Tapanga Bornt won by forfeit to give NA a 12-6 lead. The Golden Tornado tied it back up before Carly O’Connell won by forfeit and North Allegheny led again 18-12. Another Butler pin tied the score again before the Tigers won the next six bouts as Anna Svoboda (forfeit), Lorelei Bungard (pin), Ava Anthony (forfeit), Addison Urschler (forfeit), Ava Frailey (forfeit) and Heidi Radford (pin) expanded the NA lead to 54-18. Butler claimed the last bout of the night but it wasn’t enough as North Allegheny came away with the 54-24 win.
Bungard was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match pinning Mylee Toner in 3:35.
North Allegheny improves to 8-6 overall. Butler falls to 5-6. The Tigers return to action on Friday, January 30 when they host the NA Invitational in a two-day event. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
