Mia Kaufman qualifies for WPIAL Singles Tournament

North Allegheny hosted the Section 2-AAA Singles Tournament at the newly renovated tennis courts at North Allegheny Senior High School. The Tigers had two girls competing in the event, Mia Kaufman was the No. 3 seed while Audrey Zheng came in as the No. 9 seed.

Both Tigers won in the first round of the tournament with Kaufman defeating 14th-seeded Emily Hinch of Butler, 10-5 while Zheng made quick work of Seneca Valley’s Alaina Brody who was the No. 8 seed by a score of 10-0.

Zheng bowed out in the quarterfinals falling to top-seeded and eventual section champion Cassandra Lapina of Pine-Richland while Kaufman defeated Montour’s Raven Karlik by a score of 10-1 getting her to the semifinals. With the top four finishers qualifying for the WPIAL Singles Tournament, Kaufman punched her ticket to the event.

Kaufman fell to second-seeded Elinor Kim of North Hills in the semifinals but would bounce back to win the third-place consolation match defeating Kiera Wise of Moon 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Kaufman will compete in the WPIAL Singles Tournament on Wednesday at North Allegheny. The Tigers are back in action today with a non-section match at home against Hampton at 3:30 p.m.
