NA Advances To WPIAL Semifinals With Win Over Franklin Regional
In the regular season finale earlier in the month, North Allegheny claimed a 5-0 sweep over Franklin Regional. Facing off again in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals on Wednesday, the Tigers once more earned a 5-0 victory and advanced to the WPIAL semifinals for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons. It’s also the third consecutive season NA dealt the Panthers a playoff loss.
Helping the Tigers to the victory were singles players Sara Fernandez, Emily Wincko and Abbey Swirsding. All three picked up wins, including a hard-fought triumph by Swirsding at No. 3 singles over Michelle Yan, 6-4, 6-3.
At No. 1 doubles, the tandem of Reagan Dougherty and Eileen Hu seized an exciting win in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, over Lucy Zheng and Makenzie Marcus. The No. 2 pairing of Tia Soussou and Rebecca Murphy cruised to a 6-1, 6-0, victory over their opponents.
Third-seeded North Allegheny improves to 13-2 overall and returns to the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals to face second-seeded Shady Side Academy on Monday at Sewickley Academy at 3:00 pm.
