NA places third at Battle Against Breast Cancer Tournament

North Allegheny traveled to Sharpsville High School to take part in the Battle Against Breast Cancer Tournament on Saturday. The Tigers had 12 girls place in the top eight, and had 147 points as a team, good enough for third place. Corry Area claimed the team title in the tournament.

Carly O’Connell was the top finishing Tiger coming in second at 118 pounds.

O’Connell rolled through the bracket as she pinned her first three opponents to get to the final. In the final, she was tripped up by Corry Area’s Makenna Williams to finish with the silver medal.

Lorelei Bungard, Addison Urschler and Alex Gosnell all finished in third in their respective weight brackets.

Bungard started in the quarterfinals where she won by major decision. After falling in the semifinals, Bungard claimed a 4-0 decision and an 11-7 decision in the consolation bracket to get to the third-place match. In the third-place match, Bungard defeated Ariana Fiscus of General McLane, 11-7, to claim the bronze medal. Bungard’s win in the third-place match was the 50th of her career. She is only the seventh wrestler in program history to reach that milestone.

Urschler also started in the quarterfinals where she won by pin. She was tripped up in the semifinals before winning again by fall in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place match, Urschler pinned Franklin’s Jersey Swartz to finish in third place.

Gosnell had a similar path as Bungard and Urschler as she won her quarterfinal match by pin before being defeated in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Gosnell took home a 3-1 decision to get to the third-place match. In the third-place match, Gosnell made quick work of Ariana Laboy of McDowell.

Tapanga Bornt and Heidi Radford finished the day in fifth-place.

Bornt won her opening match in the quarterfinals by pin before losing by tech fall in the semifinals. Bornt dropped a 3-0 decision in the consolation semifinals to end up in the fifth-place match. In the fifth-place match, Bornt pinned teammate Anna Kovacic to take fifth-place.

Radford won by pin in her quarterfinal match before being upended in the semifinals. Radford dropped a 9-0 decision in the consolation semifinals to get to the fifth-place match. In the fifth-place match, Radford pinned McKenzie Doutt of Corry Area.

Kovacic and Sally Horton placed sixth in Sharpsville.

Kovacic dropped her opening match before winning her next three by pin to get to the consolation semifinals. Kovacic was tripped up in the consolation semifinals before falling to Bornt in the fifth-place match to finish in sixth.

Horton opened the tournament with a win before falling in the quarterfinals. She won her next two matches by fall but was tripped up in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Horton fell to Fort LeBoeuf’s Maya Banta to end the day in sixth-place.

Kaelyn Fraley and Gabriella Molina were seventh-place finishers.

Fraley won by pin in her opening match before losing by tech fall in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Fraley went 1-1 to find herself in the seventh-place match. In the seventh-place match, Fraley pinned Isabella McVicker of Beth-Center.

Molina dropped her first-round match before winning the next two in the consolation bracket. Just before the consolation semifinals, Molina fell to get to the seventh-place match. In the seventh-place match, Molina pinned Fort LeBoeuf’s Lydia Hull.

Ava Anthony and Shanmukha Gannavaram ended the day in eighth place.

Anthony won in the opening round before falling in the quarterfinals. Anthony went 1-1 in the consolation bracket to go to the seventh-place match where she fell to Taylor Pears of Hickory.

Gannavaram fell her first match before going 1-1 in the consolation bracket. In the seventh-place match, Gannavaram lost to Hickory’s London Shaw.

Anna Svoboda and Lilliana Steffanos picked up wins on the day.
