Rumpler Wins Silver In First-Ever PIAA Girls Wrestling Championships
Senior Leyna Rumpler capped an historic career at North Allegheny with a second-place performance at the PIAA girls’ individual wrestling championship in Hershey. Rumpler, who won gold at states last season at 148 pounds, earned her second silver medal at states on Saturday by finishing in second place at 155 pounds. She also took second place at the state championships as a sophomore. This weekend’s state tournament was the first ever sanctioned by the PIAA, making Rumpler the first Tiger in program history to garner a medal in PIAA competition.
Rumpler opened the three-day tournament on Thursday by securing her 100th career victory with a win by fall over Delaware Valley’s Juliet Fitzpatrick. After reaching the 100-win plateau, Rumpler continued to blaze her trail through the 155-pound bracket on Friday with a pin fall over Mylea Lambert of Northampton in the quarterfinals and followed with a hard-fought victory over Raegan Snider of Northern Bedford. Tied 1-1 after regular time and a scoreless overtime, led to a 30 second ultimate tiebreaker. Rumpler was able to successfully ride out Snider and win 2-1. The victory over Snider set the stage for another significant battle between Rumpler and Hickory’s Avry Rihal.
The top two-ranked wrestlers in the state at 155 pounds dueled last week with Rumpler defeating Rihal by a 2-1 decision for the PIAA West Regional title. However, in the rematch, it was Rihal who earned a narrow victory with a 1-0 decision for the PIAA championship.
Rumpler finishes her career at North Allegheny with 102 career wins and a trophy case filled with medals. Congratulations to Rumpler and all of the members of the North Allegheny girls’ wrestling team for another historic season.
