Sara Fernandez Wins WPIAL Bronze At Singles Tournament
North Allegheny junior Sara Fernandez placed third at the WPIAL Class 3A singles tournament on Thursday, punching her ticket to the PIAA singles championship tournament in November.
In the third-place consolation match, Fernandez defeated Shady Side Academy’s Nichole Poltinnikov by a 6-3, 6-4, decision to win WPIAL bronze.
On Wednesday, third-seeded Fernandez opened the tournament with a 10-0 shutout over Fox Chapel’s Sienna Siegel and followed with a hard-fought 11-10(6) triumph against Mt. Lebanon’s Sophia Cunningham to reach the semifinals. Fernandez fell in the semis to Upper St. Clair’s Maggie Stief before bouncing back against Poltinnikov in the third-place consolation contest.
