Tigers Advance 2 Boats at Historic Stotesbury Cup 2024

The NA Tigers brought seven select lineups to Philadelphia to compete in the 97th Annual Stotesbury Cup regatta. Despite an eventful drive across the state that included a jumped hitch and an electrical problem on the bus, the Tigers arrived ready to race.

Friday’s racing started early with the Tigers Junior Girls 2x (Natalie Helfrich and Madelyn Rodgers) who raced this boat for the first time this season, They made it down the course in 6:21.45 missing out on semi-finals by seven places but came out ahead of 16 teams. Behind them was Jr Boys 2x Finn Iovino & Nolan Bunn who just missed progressing by two places and two seconds taking 20th.

Next down for time trials was the Boys Jr 4+ racing up as the lineup was comprised of all novices and coxed by Junior Lauren Keyser (Nik Krsirgara Neil Pore, Phoenix Core, & Max Disque) the crew made a strong performance besting NA’s entry from 2023 in the same event by 40 seconds and taking a respectable 41st/ 65 in one of the regattas deepest and most competitive events.

Boys Junior 4x of Miles Rees, Anthony Bertucci, Carson Carona & Layton Wright were the first entries of the day to progress to Semis posting a 5:03.4 in 14th place and securing lane 1 for Saturday morning. Joining them in progressing to Semis was the Girls Senior 4x, Kathy Zema Alex Witzel Sawyer Wright & Lorelei Schreiber, who placed eighth to take lane five in Saturday’s semis.

Racing up in the Sr 4x event were three sophomores & one junior, Cooper Lemon, Alex Repinski, Roman Bellisario & Christian Sperandeo who placed 18th, wrapping their season with many lessons learned.

The Tiger’s final entry for Friday Time trials was the Girls Sr 4+ coxed by senior Evie Disque, Boden Sumerlin, Madison Lambert, Alexandra Edfors & Charlee Sunday took 34th/50 with a time of 6:06.9. This also wraps the line-ups season. The crew was pleased with the piece and the improvements made from Midwest but it wasn’t enough to advance in a fast field.

Saturday’s Semi-Finals brought flatter water and even lower winds for fast racing. The Boys Jr 4x raced at 9:10 am and fought some steering troubles in the last 500 meters, ultimately taking 5th place and missing out on finals. The Girls crew came down a few events later and placed fourth, missing out on advancing by 2 places.

The Tigers Men’s JV 4x and Womens Sr 4x will line up against many of the same crews at SRAAs at the Cooper River next weekend and look forward to applying lessons learned on the Schuylkill to find more speed.
