Tigers Claw Past Panthers, 4-1, in WPIAL First Round

The North Allegheny girls’ tennis team opened the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs on the road on Tuesday afternoon and came away with a 4-1 first round victory over the Franklin Regional Panthers.

The Tigers rolled to wins in doubles play and earned victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. In singles action, sophomore Emily Wincko collected a 6-1, 6-0, triumph against Ellen Liu. Junior Claire Zheng posted a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Hannah Zheng.

In doubles, the No. 1 pairing of Abbey Swirsding and Claire Shao cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Sarah Gardner and Abigail Krieger. At No. 2 doubles, the tandem of Rebecca Kolano and Siya Jain breezed by Agatha Lodini and Divya Ardyo, 6-0, 6-1.

The victory improves North Allegheny’s record to 7-6 overall. The Tigers advance to the WPIAL quarterfinals to face the top-seeded Peters Township Indians on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
