NORTH ALLEGHENY VARSITY GIRLS' LACROSSE

*GAME SUMMARIES*

SHADY SIDE DROPS LADY TIGERS, 11-4

Despite a stellar game by junior goalie Amanda Chipman, Shady Side Academy was able to defeat the Lady Tigers, 11-4, at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Senior Ashley Hughes scored a pair of goals, her eleventh and twelfth, to continue her seven-game scoring streak.  

Senior Lauren Farrell tallied her fourth goal of the season and freshman Strealy Clark also notched her fourth goal of the season on a free position shot in the first half.  Sophomore Whitney Wilson was a standout in the defensive end, blocking passes and pulling the ball out on transition.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action tomorrow night when they host rival North Hills at Newman Stadium.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 pm in the Section 1 contest.

JV NOTES: The JV team continued to roll as they defeated Shady Side 6-0.  Laura Seward and Elise Moore scored a pair of goals each with Alexa Jennings and Laura Nelson picking up a single tallies.  The NA defense held Shady Side to just one shot against goalies Angelo Smarto and Sandy Fulkerson.

SENECA VALLEY DOWNS LADY TIGERS, 9-6

The Seneca Valley Raiders defeated the Lady Tigers, 9-6, at Seneca on Thursday afternoon.  Senior Lauren Farrell had a pair of goals while junior Abby Clark, senior Ashley Hughes, freshman Strealy Clark, and freshman Chelsea Cameron all scored single tallies.

The goal by Hughes was her 10th of the year as she kept her scoring streak alive at six games.  Abby Clark has now scored six times, Farrell and Stealy Clark three, and Cameron twice.  Junior goalie Amanda Chipman stopped 5 of 14 shots with her current save percentage standing at .460.

Junior Katie Schwartz made her season debut on the Varsity squad after starting the season on the JV team.  According to Coach Harry Datz, "Katie has been moved up because of her outstanding role as leader to the JV girls, and she has a strong sense of the field along with a delicate scoring touch."

JV NOTES:  The JV team defeated Seneca Valley, 9-4.  Laura Peery led the way with 3 goals while Megan Litterini, Alexa Jennings, Emily Rosenzweig, Emily Murphy, and Katie Frantz had a goal each.  NA had 17 shots while holding Seneca to just 8 shots on their goalies!

SHALER DOWNS LADY TIGERS, 15-8

A second half rally was not enough at Shaler on Wednesday night as the Lady Tigers were defeated by the Titans, 15-8.  Scoring two goals each for NA were senior Ashley Hughes, junior Lara Siminerio, and junior Abby ClarkLauren Farrell and Strealy Clark also scored for the Lady Tigers.

After trailing 12-2 at halftime, the defense sparked an NA rally, but it was too little, too late.  The Lady Tigers' record falls to 0-2 in section and 1-4 overall.  NA will be back in action again this afternoon when they travel to Seneca Valley for a 3:30 pm section contest.  The JV game will follow the varsity game.

JV NOTES:  The JV team shut out Shaler, 10-0, with Angela Smarto in goal.  Laura Peery scored 5 goals, Katie Schwartz added two more, and Elise Moore, Alexa Jennings, and Laura Seward one each.

LADY TIGERS FALL TO MT. LEBANON, 19-3

Senior Ashley Hughes scored her seventh goal of the season but the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils were too tough for the Lady Tigers on Wednesday night at Newman Stadium as Lebo won, 19-3.  Cydnee Traversari and Chelsea Cameron scored goals for NA.

After the Lady Tigers scored the opening goal right of the first draw, Mt. Lebanon came back to take control of the game.  With three players missing because of spring break, Tiger coach Harry Datz went to his JV goalies.  Sandy Fulkerson and Angela Smarto split the game for NA.

The loss dropped the NA overall record to 1-3 on the season, 0-1 in section play.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action again Tuesday when they travel to Shaler.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm, with the JV contest starting at 6:00 pm.

JV NOTES:  The JV team and Mt. Lebanon played to a 3-3 tie.  There is no overtime in JV play.  Scoring for NA were Elise Moore, Katie Schwartz, and Laura Peery.  Sandy Fulkerson and Angela Smarto split goaltending duties for the Lady Tigers.

LADY TIGERS EDGE SETON LASALLE, 7-6, IN OVERTIME FOR FIRST WIN

Coach Harry Datz' Lady Tigers gained their first victory of the season when senior Ashley Hughes scored with 2:29 remaining in overtime to give NA a 7-6 victory.  On a cold night at Newman Stadium, Hughes scored three goals, junior Abby Clark tallied twice, with Samantha Merritt and Strealy Clark also scoring for the victorious Lady Tigers.  Junior goalie Amanda Chipman had another excellent performance in goal with 14 saves.

The win improved the NA record to 1-2 on the season and marked the first win by the Lady Tigers under the new WPIAL format.  NA will be home for two more games this week.  Tomorrow night, Mt. Lebanon will come to Newman Stadium and on Thursday, Greater Latrobe will provide the opposition.  The Mt. Lebanon game will start at 8:00 pm while the Latrobe game has a 7:30 pm start.  JV games will begin ninety minutes before the varsity.

JV NOTES: The JV team crushed Seton LaSalle, 13-1, on Monday night.  Leading the assault were Elise Moore with 4 goals while Megan Litterini, Laura Peery, and Laura Seward tallied two goals each.  The victory improved the JV record to 3-0.

SEWICKLEY ACADEMY DOWNS LADY TIGERS IN SECTION OPENER

The Lady Tigers lost to the 2003 WPSLA Runner-up Sewickley Academy Panthers by a score of 20-2 on Tuesday afternoon.  The game started off on a good note for the Tigers in their second game of the inaugural WPIAL season, holding the Panthers to a 2-1 lead through the first six minutes.  Senior Ashley Hughes opened up the scoring for NA with her second goal of the season, cutting Sewickley's lead in half.  Junior goaltender Amanda Chipman held the Panthers within reach stopping the first three shots of the game from Sewickley's isolation plays.  The Panthers came back strong and held a 12-2 lead at the half.  During that time, Hughes notched her third goal of the year and second of the game.

The second half did not prove any easier for the Tigers as Sewickley Academy scored eight more goals.  Third Man junior Kate Stevens led all Tigers with four ground ball pick ups and one interceiption.  Chipman had another good game between the pipes facing 36 shots and stopping 16 of them.  She has stopped 27 of 58 shots thus far in the season for a save percentage of .466.  The current NA record is 0-2 while Sewickley tallied their first victory against two losses.

The Lady Tigers will host Vincentian Academy at Newman Stadium on tomorrow night.  The Junior Varsity squad will draw at 6:30 pm while the Varsity game will begin at 8:00 pm.
