NORTH ALLEGHENY VARSITY CREW NA WOMEN TAKE TOP SPOTS AT PHILADELPHIA YOUTH REGATTAby Donna
Hudson
North
Allegheny’s women rowers showed medal-winning form at the Philadelphia
Youth Regatta, held Saturday, July 17 on Philadelphia’s Schuykill River.
34 high school and club teams from the eastern US competed in a
series of men’s and women’s events that included both sweep (one oar
per rower) and sculling (two oars per rower) contests. The
NA women’s Junior 16 Double of Sara Whitby and Brittney Kelly brought
home a gold medal, while teammates Katie Zemel and Kim Weaver captured the
silver in the same event. In
the women’s Junior 16 Quad, Erin Dauson, Kathleen Janosco, Briana
Pittman, and Kim Weaver rounded out the day’s successful results with a
bronze medal. All
of NA’s competing rowers took part in the team’s optional summer
sculling camp. Men’s team
rowers will be competing in Indianapolis July 21 – 25.
Both teams will then be on break until school resumes at the end of
the summer. New rower
try-outs will be held during the first week of school.
For further information, which will be posted as available, refer
to the official North Allegheny Rowing website at www.narowing.org. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA BRINGS HOME THE MEDALS AT THREE RIVERS REGATTA by Donna Hudson 16 rowers from the optional NA men's and women's summer sculling camps participated in the crew races held on Sunday, July 4th as part of the annual Three Rivers Regatta at Point State Park, downtown Pittsburgh. All 16 rowers came home with medals. The team competed in a combination of 1000-meter single, double and quad sprint events that finished before the large crowds in the grandstands lining the riverbank just above the Point. Despite the 90 degree heat, the women's team captured 6 medals and the men added 2 more for a very successful day on the water. COMPLETE RESULTS

ROWERS SUCCESSFUL AT
US ROWING NATIONAL
INVITATIONALS by Donna Hudson The
North Allegheny Men’s Rowing Team capped their already successful spring
racing season with another outstanding showing.
The NA Men’s Junior Quad of Michael
Ban, Singen Elliott, Jordan Ellis, and Tim Francis took a silver medal
at this past weekend’s prestigious US Rowing National Youth Invitational
Regatta, held in Cincinnati, Ohio. A
total of 86 high school teams participated in the two-day event, including
crews from Florida, Illinois, Texas, California and Washington DC.
In order to be invited, rowers had to have captured a first or
second-place finish in their respective regional regattas this spring.
NA competes in the Midwest Region. NA’s
other two boats, the Men’s Junior Double (Ryan
Moravec and Dave Reynolds)
and the Men’s Junior Quad B (Joe
Brendel, Greg Domville, Andrew Kaiser and Pete
Unkovic), both placed second in their petite finals, ranking them each
8th overall in their categories. * * * * * * * * * * * * * *NA

* * * * * * * * * * * * * North Allegheny Rower Invited to US Junior National Team Try-outsby Donna
Hudson NA sophomore Joseph Brendel is one of 59 rowers from across the United States who have been invited to participate in the 2004 US Rowing Junior National Team Selection Camp. The athletes will be competing for spots on the Junior Men's National Team, which will travel to the 2004 FISA Junior World Championships to be held July 27 - August 1 in Banyoles, Spain.
Joe
will be participating in the National Team Selection Camp from June 14th
– July 12th in Connecticut under the direction of Junior
Men’s National Team Head Coach Evans Liolin, who is also the men’s
freshmen coach at Yale University. Joe’s
selection is based on his nationally ranked indoor rowing (erg) score, as
well as his medal-winning performances as a member of the North Allegheny
Rowing Team. NA
men’s team head coach Melissa Titus noted, “Joe’s invitation to the
US Rowing Junior National Team Selection Camp is a great honor. It reflects not only his current accomplishments but his
future potential as well.” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA ROWERS TAKE MEDALS AT LARGEST US
REGATTA by
Donna Hudson The
NA Tiger Rowers traveled to Philadelphia over the weekend to join 180
other high school teams from the eastern US and Canada in the intense
competition of the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.
Stotesbury is the largest high school rowing regatta in the United
States, drawing over 5,000 student competitors. The
NA team had a very successful weekend, with 8 of its 12 entered boats
qualifying for semi-finals and 6 boats advancing to finals.
The men’s team captured a silver medal in the Junior Quad and a
bronze in the Senior Double. The
Junior Quad boat was only 0.09 seconds out of first place and the Senior
Quad was bettered only by two Canadian teams, making them the
highest-finishing US boat in that event. Special
congratulations go to NASH medal winners Greg
Domville, Pete Unkovic, and
Ryan Moravec as well as NAI
medal winners Singen Elliott, Rory
Dahl, and Joe Brendel. The
team’s other top-finishing boats were the Men’s Senior Quad (Michael
Ban, David Reynolds, Jordan Ellis, Tim Francis – 4th place),
the Women’s Junior Quad (Sharon Dauson, Megan Hudson, Katie Hodnik,
Kathleen Batykefer – 5th place), the women’s Senior
Double (Kaitlyn Smith, Krista Gregan – 6th place), and the
Men's Junior Double (Andrew Kaiser, Sean Barunas - 6th place). Although
Stotesbury marks the end of the full team spring rowing season, NA will be
taking 3 qualifying men’s boats into the US Rowing Youth Invitationals
to be held in Cincinnati on June 4 & 5.
Selected varsity rowers will be continuing their training in
preparation for that event. Congratulations
to all the Tiger Rowers on a great spring racing season! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA ROWERS CAPTURE MEDALS AT MIDWEST CHAMPIONSHIPS by Donna Hudson The NA Tiger Rowers traveled to Detroit on May 8 & 9 to take on the stiff competition of the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships. A total of 48 top high school teams from 11 Midwest states and western Pennsylvania converged on Stony Creek Metro Park for two days of racing. NA had a strong showing, coming away with 7 medals and 6 other top six finishes. The weekend included everything from sunshine to thunderstorms and downpours that had the schedule of thirty-one 1500-meter sprints events running behind by as much as four hours on Saturday. Many of the events required both qualifying heats and finals, and some also had semi-final races, so rowers were frequently on and off the water. Despite the long delays and Saturday's weather distractions, NA's 52 rowers maintained their successful focus. Congratulations to NAI medal winners Joe Brendel, Sara Whitby, Brian Maskrey and Bethany Wilson, and NASH medal winners Jordan Ellis, David Reynolds, Ryan Moravec, Michael Ban, Tim Francis, Pete Unkovic, Sharon Dauson, Megan Hudson, Kathleen Batykefer, Katy Antimarino, Katie Hodnik, Lara Seltz, Tori Prader, Hailey Myers, Krista Gregan, Ali Bogart, Kaitlyn Smith, Andrew Kaiser, Sean Barunas, Patrick Burdick, Ryan Barunas, and Nick Manis. The team competes next at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia on May 13-15. FULL MIDWEST RESULTS
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA ROWERS GET TO THE GOLD IN WEATHER-SHORTENED SCHOLASTIC SPRINTS by Donna Hudson NA’s
Tiger Rowers braved the wind and rain to turn in outstanding performances
at the Pittsburgh Scholastic Sprints Regatta on Sunday, May 2, 2004.
The Tigers were able to capture several medals before plummeting
temperatures and rough water brought the event to an early end. 27
teams from Pennsylvania and Ohio gathered at Lake Arthur, Moraine State
Park for a full day of sweep and sculling contests.
Early morning sunshine quickly gave way to ominous clouds and soon
spectators and rowers alike were huddled under umbrellas and inside the
team tents which clustered on the lake shore.
Many
boats never had a chance to complete the finals for their events or even
to race at all, but those that did engaged in hard-fought battles against
other strong teams. NA’s
novice women crossed the line ahead of the pack in both the Novice 8+ and
Freshman 8+ races, and several of NA’s small varsity boats captured
medals as well. The
Tigers travel to Detroit this weekend for the Midwest Scholastic Rowing
Championships. Good
luck to all our rowers! Full

Donna Hudson The North Allegheny Tiger rowers traveled to the Occoquan
River in Lorton, Virginia, to take on 28 other teams at the ISA/Regional
Parks Regatta. The event gave
the NA Tigers a chance to compete against strong teams from the Washington
DC and Philadelphia areas. The regatta marked the NA team’s first water
race of the Spring 2004 season and, despite the limited water practice
time due to frequently inclement Pittsburgh weather, they came away with
an impressive collection of medals in both sculling and sweep events – 6
gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze. Gold medal winners from NAI were Steve Marcus, Ian Levy,
AJ Cadman, Mark Nolfi, Brian Maskrey,
Elana Reynolds, Kathleen Janosco, Briana

Allegheny’s Carson Middle School was the scene of intense competition on
Saturday, March 06, 2004 as over 200 Pittsburgh-area rowers came together
for the 5th annual North Allegheny Indoor Rowing High School
Championships. These athletes, representing 12 high school teams, battled
to see who could pull the hardest and fastest in simulated 2000 meter
rowing races. The
event was broken into a series of 18 races, which were based upon
rowers’ experience level and weights. Participants were not only able to gauge their own level of
fitness and skill, but also had a chance to see how they stack up against
the competition they will meet on the water this spring. NA
rowers had strong performances throughout the day, capturing 9 medals in
the women’s events and 11 in the men’s. NA
sophomore Joe Brendel had the top men’s time of the day and set an NA
all-time men’s 2000-meter indoor rowing record with a time of 6:22.5.
Oakland Catholic senior Amanda Polk finished with the top women’s
time, pulling a stunning 7:08.2. NA
freshman Kathleen Janosco set a new North Allegheny freshman indoor
all-time best for 2000 meters with a time of 7:50.6.
Both Brendel and Polk’s times put them at top-20 level for high
school rowers in the U.S. Visiting teams included Central Catholic, Ellis, Fox Chapel, Hampton, Mt. Lebanon, North Catholic, Oakland Catholic, Pine-Richland, Steel City, Taylor-Allderdice and Upper St. Clair. For
