LADY TIGERS CAPTURE WPIAL TITLE

Meet Results

The Lady Tigers won their fourth consecutive WPIAL title on Thursday afternoon at Canon-McMillan High School.  NA defeated Seneca Valley, 99-51, Canon-McMillan, 98-52, and Latrobe, 98-52, to earn the crown for first-year coach John Neff.

Winning the track events was the secret to the Lady Tigers' success.  NA outpointed all three opponents by a large amount on the track.  Leading the way was senior Amy Ruffolo who won the 1600 meters against all three opponents.  Junior Rebecca Mapel captured the 300 hurdles against all three, and won the 100 hurdles against Seneca Valley and Latrobe.  Freshman Kelly Langhans, who just set a school record by running a 58.0 in the 400 in the Northern Qualifier,  won the 400 against all opponents.  Sophomore Kelley O'Brien ran a 12:04.9 in the 3200 to take first place points against all three teams.

Sophomore Lindsay Appel equaled the school record of 25.7  to capture first in the 100 against the times of Canon-McMillan and Seneca Valley, while sophomore Michelle Diez was first against Canon-Mac.  All three NA relays teams were victorious giving the Tigers first-place points in the  400, 1600 and 3200 races.

In the field, junior Katie Elmore captured first place in the long jump in all three competitions.  Freshman Jade Hambrick won the discus against Canon-Mac and Seneca Valley while freshman Kristen Zeleznik took first in the pole vault against the same two teams.  Senior Taryn Bozorg won the pole vault event against Canon-McMillan.  Freshman Maura Higgins captured first place points in the triple jump against Seneca Valley and Latrobe while senior Amanda McCoy was first against Latrobe.

The Lady Tigers were without the services of injured senior Shannon Yon.  The Tiger senior was injured at the Baldwin Invitational last week and would have participated in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, and 1600 meter relay.  Yon finished second in the PIAA championships last spring.

TIGER TEAMS EDGE BUTLER, GIRLS WIN SECTION TITLE

Meet Results

Both Tiger track and field teams posted close victories over Butler at the last section meet of the season on Friday afternoon at Newman Stadium.  Junior Andrew McMillen set a school record in the discus with a toss of 171'4" to lead NA to their first victory over Butler in seven years.  The boys' team defeated the Tornado, 82-68, to finish in second place with a section record of 5-1.  With the second place finish, NA qualified for the team playoffs.

In the boys' meet, the Tigers won seven of eleven running events to secure the victory.  Sophomore Max Brown won the 1600, 800, and 3200 meter races to lead NA.  Senior Kevin Shugars took both hurdles races.  NA won two of the three relays.  Seniors Brett Pollack and Jesse Snider teamed up with junior Dan Boada and Brown to win the 3200 relay.  In the 1600 relay, it was Shugars, sophomores Garth Sceidemantel and Evan Scott, along with Boada, that outran the Tornado for the victory.

Butler captured four of the seven field events with Calvin Littlejohn winning all three jumps.  McMillen was the big story for NA.  Along with setting the school record for the discus, the Tiger junior also won the shot put.  Freshman Sean Gil continued his successful season by winning the pole vault.

In the girls' meet, the Lady Tigers edged Butler, 81-69, to complete an undefeated season in section meets with a 7-0 record.  With the win, NA won the section title and qualified for the playoffs.

The Lady Tigers were first in eight of eleven races on the track.  Junior Rebecca Mapel took both the 100 and 300 meters hurdles.  Sophomore Lindsay Appel captured the 200, sophomore Kelley O'Brien won the 1600 while sophomore Sarah LeDonne was first in the 3200 meter run.  In the field, senior Shannon Yon led the way with victories in both the high jump and long jump.  Junior Amanda Posteraro won the javelin while freshman Maura Higgins outjumped all competitors in the triple jump.

The Lady Tigers won all three relay races.  In the 3200, sophomores Michelle Diez and O'Brien teamed up with seniors Molly Friel and Amy Ruffolo to defeat the Tornado.  In the sprint relay, freshmen Kelly Langhans and Jackie Givens, along with sophomores Mapel and Appel, were too fast for Butler.  In the 1600 relay, the team of sophomore Michelle Sauer, Appel, Friel and Langhans captured first place.

WPIAL TRACK AND FIELD - 2004

The Tigers will compete in Class AAA once again, with the boys going against 55 teams, the girls in with 54 schools.  Individual competitors will continue to qualify for the state championship on the basis of AAA or AA classification.  The top two teams from each section will enter WPIAL team championship play.  If two teams tie for second place, the winner of head-to-head competition will enter the tournament round.  Multiple way ties will be broken in the following manner:

a.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
b.  The team with the best numerical record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
c.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all will enter post-season play.

All multiple team meets scheduled in regular season or post-season play will be scored as individual dual meets. (e.g. each team competes against all the others).  A tie breaker system for dual meet regular season and dual meet post season meets has been established.  Ties are broken in the following manner:

A.  Greater number of first place winners.
B.  Greater number of second place winners.
C.  Greater number of third place winners.
D.  Coin toss

When three teams are scheduled in regular or post-season play, each will be scored as an individual dual meet.  If each team earns one win and one loss in the double scoring method, the first step of the tie breaker will be total score for the day.  If a tie persists, the regular steps of first, second, and third place finishers will be applied.

The following qualifying standards have been established for boys and girls in class AAA for entry into the individual qualifying rounds:
