TIGERS FALL TO MANHEIM TOWNSHIP, 10-9, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

The Tigers put up a valiant effort on Thursday night at Newman Stadium, but Manheim Township pulled out a 10-9 double overtime victory to drop NA from the playoffs.  Senior attack Chris Wojciak scored six goals to lead NA with senior midfield Jordan Quaglia adding two more.  Senior midfield Dylan Baun also scored for the Tigers in the WPSLA quarterfinal contest.

After Manheim jumped off to a 1-0 lead at the 10:31 mark of the first quarter, Wojciak came back to tie the game on an assist from Quaglia with 7:06 left.  Wojciak set up Quaglia just 20 seconds later to give NA a 2-1 lead.  Wojciak's second goal, on an assist from senior attack Tim Huckestein put the Tigers ahead, 3-1, at the end of one quarter.

Manheim scored the first four goals of the second quarter to jump into a 5-3 lead.  Wojciak's third goal at the 1:37 mark cut the deficit to one goal as Manheim took a 5-4 advantage to the intermission.

The Tigers came out strong in the third quarter.  Baun led the comeback when he scored just 57 seconds into the quarter to tie the game at 5-5.  Wojciak added a pair of goals in the next two minutes to give the Tigers a 7-5 lead with 8:49 remaining in the quarter.  Manheim took advantage of NA penalties late in the quarter to tie the game at 7-7 going into the final period.

Once again, NA recaptured the lead early in the quarter.  Sophomore Blaine Simmer set up Wojciak's sixth goal to give the Tigers an 8-7 lead.  Quaglia scored his second goal as NA took a 9-7 advantage at the 8:48 mark.  The Tigers again found themselves a man down twice late in the quarter and Manheim took advantage.  The visitors from Central Pennsylvania scored two man-up goals to tie the game at 9-9 with 4:47 remaining.  It looked like Wojciak had the game winner with just seconds remaining in regulation time, but the Tiger senior was called for being in the crease and the goal was disallowed.

Neither team scored in the first 4:00 overtime.  Manheim was able to get the deciding goal with two minutes left in the second OT.  It was a tough loss for the 21 NA seniors who have been a major part of North Allegheny Lacrosse for the past four years.  The loss gave the Tigers a final record of 13-5 for the season.

TIGERS HAMMER HAMPTON, 14-6, TO ADVANCE TO WPSLA QUARTERFINALS

Senior midfield Jordan Quaglia scored five goals and sophomore attack Blaine Simmer added four more as the Tigers easily defeated Hampton, 14-6, in the first round of the WPSLA playoffs at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Senior Tom Dittrich scored three times as NA built a 7-2 halftime lead.  Senior defense Chris Bollinger picked up two assists.

In the first quarter, Simmer scored just 1:58 into the game on an assist by Bollinger to give NA a 1-0 lead.  After Hampton tied the game, Dittrich scored his first goal of the game to put the Tigers ahead 2-1.  Simmer's second goal, on an assist from senior Chris Wojciak, with 49 seconds remaining increased the Tiger advantage to 3-1 after one quarter.

The Talbots tallied early in the second quarter, but the Tigers answered with four straight to take control of the game.  Sophomore Glen Stanzione, filling in for senior Tim Huckestein, scored at the 9:41 mark to push the lead to 4-2.  Quaglia scored twice within a span of 1:33 to push the margin to 6-2 before Simmer scored just 3 seconds before the end of the half as the Tigers took a 7-2 advantage to the intermission.

In the third quarter, Hampton again scored first at the 7:27 mark.  Simmer answered just 16 seconds later with his fourth goal of the game as the Tigers led, 8-3.  Simmer assisted on a Quaglia goal at the 6:06 mark to push the lead to 9-3.  After Hampton countered, the Tigers added three quick goals in the last 3:06 of the quarter.  Quaglia scored on an assist from Wojciak, senior midfield Dylan Baun hit the net from Glen Stanzione, and Quaglia scored his fifth goal of the game from Wojciak again at the 45 second mark as NA led, 12-4, after three quarters.

In the final period, Tiger coach John Rullan was able to clear the bench allowing all NA team members to earn some playing time.  After Hampton scored at the 10:48 mark, Dittrich tallied his second goal of the game with 7:16 left.  Dittrich earned the hat trick with his third goal at the 1:08 mark on an assist from senior midfield Mike Belliveau.  Hampton closed out the scoring with a goal at the 26 second mark, but the Tigers had already put away a big victory, 14-6.  Senior Mike Wiese came in to replace starting goalie Dan Torie and held off Hampton.

It was a team effort by the Tigers as they improved their overall record to 13-4 on the season.  With the victory, the Tigers advanced to the quarterfinal round against Manheim Township.  The game will be played at Newman Stadium tomorrow night with game time scheduled for 7:30 pm.  NA defeated Manheim, 16-7, in the season opener.

MT. LEBANON DOWNS TIGERS, 13-4

The Tigers traveled to Mt. Lebanon on Wednesday night and were defeated by the Blue Devils, 13-4.  NA played Lebo tough in the first quarter.  Goals by seniors Nick Uhler, Dylan Baun, and Tim Huckestein gave the Tigers a 3-3 tie after one quarter.  After senior midfield Jordan Quaglia scored in the second quarter, it was all Mt. Lebanon.

The key to Lebo's success was in their transition game and on face offs.  It was a tough loss for the Tigers, but they will get another chance in the WPSLA playoffs next week.

The loss dropped the NA division record to 4-3, the overall mark to 12-4.  The Tigers had won six of the last seven games coming into the game with Lebo.

TIGERS BEAT PINE-RICHLAND, 13-7, TO IMPROVE PLAYOFF POSITION

The Tigers traveled to Pine-Richland on Friday night and defeated the Rams, 13-7, for their third straight victory, their sixth in the last seven games.  On a miserable night with heavy rains for most of the game, the Tigers found themselves in a struggle.  The game was tied, 3-3, at halftime, and at 6-6, after three quarters.  NA scored the next six goals to take a 12-6 advantage before the Rams scored to cut it 12-7 with three minutes to go.  A goal by Tiger senior attack Chris Wojciak finished the scoring as NA won by a 13-7 count.

Wojciak led all scorers with 7 goals and an assist with senior midfielder Jordan Quaglia adding four goals.  Seniors Joe Smarto and Dylan Baun each scored for the Tigers with senior defense Chris Slowik picking up an assist.

The win improved the NA record to 4-2 in Division I play, 12-3 on the season.  With the victory, the Tigers moved into third place in Division I with the big game with Mt. Lebanon coming up on Tuesday.

BLAINE SIMMER'S SIX GOALS LEAD NA TO 15-9 WIN OVER FRANKLIN REGIONAL

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Sophomore attack Blaine Simmer scored six goals, five in the second half, to lead the Tigers to a 15-9 comeback victory against Franklin Regional at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Senior attack Chris Wojciak registered eight assists as NA defeated Franklin Regional for the first time in the history of the program.  Wojciak added three goals, while seniors Tim Huckestein, Dylan Baun, and Jordan Quaglia all tallied two goals each.

After Quaglia gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 1:42 into the game, Franklin Regional scored the next five goals to take a 5-1 lead after one quarter of play.  Andrew Swerdlow and Chris Fedishen scored a pair of goals each with Josh Kurz adding the fifth Panther marker as Franklin Regional dominated play in the first quarter.

As has been the case in recent games, the Tigers rallied in the second quarter.   Early in the second quarter, the Panthers were called for three penalties.  Quaglia made FR pay when he scored a man-up goal on an assist from Wojciak at the 8:45 mark to cut the deficit to 5-2.  Baun got loose down the middle and beat Panther goalie Sean Godfrey to make it a 5-3 game a little over two minutes later.  Blaine Simmer's first goal at the 4:28 mark cut the margin to 5-4.  The Panthers answered when Swerdlow came from behind the goal to score his third of the game to push the lead back to two goals at 6-4 with 2:05 left in the half.  The Tigers were not finished, however, as Wojciak scored on a pass from senior Garrett Simmer to make it a 6-5 game.  With just 12 seconds left before the intermission, Huckestein converted another pass from Wojciak, and the teams went to the dressing rooms with the score tied at 6-6.

The teams matched goals early in the third quarter.  Andrew Stimmel scored from 15 yards out to put FR back on top, 7-6, just 40 seconds into the second half.  Wojciak's second goal tied the game at the 10:31 mark.  Jordan Nance scored from long range to give the Panthers an 8-7 advantage, but it would be the last Franklin Regional lead of the game.  Blaine Simmer then took over.  At the 7:03 mark, Simmer scored on a pass from Huckestein to tie the game at 8-8.  With NA holding a man-up advantage, Simmer beat Godfrey on another good feed from Wojciak as NA took the lead for good at 9-8.  Simmer wasn't finished in the third quarter as he picked up a natural hat trick on a pass from his brother, Garrett, to give the Tigers a 10-8 lead after three quarters.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Tigers.  It was Blaine Simmer again from Wojciak at the 10:38 mark as the lead went to 11-8.  Kurz came back to score an impressive goal coming out from behind the net to cut the margin to 11-9 with 7:53 left.  Simmer then scored his fifth straight goal for the Tigers with Wojciak picking up his seventh assist as NA moved ahead, 12-9, at the 6:01 mark.  With 3:48 remaining, Wojciak set up Huckestein for his second goal of the game to push the margin to 13-9.  Baun scored from Huckestein to make it 14-9 with just 1:41 left in the game.  Wojciak put the finishing touches on the victory when he scored a spectacular around the back shot with 1:26 remaining to give NA a 15-9 victory over the Panthers.

Once again, it was a good team effort that featured a come from behind Tiger rally. With the victory, the NA Division I record improved to 3-2, the overall mark to 11-3.    After the first quarter, the Tigers outscored the Panthers, 14-4.  The defense picked up the intensity in the second half holding FR to just three goals.  Senior defenders Chris Bollinger, Chris Slowik and Nick Uhler continually made it tough on the Panther offense and forced numerous turnovers.  Senior Dan Torie rebounded from a shaky start to play well in the final three periods.  The Tiger midfield began to assert itself as the game wore on as the Tiger depth paid off against Franklin Regional.  Senior Randy Burns had a good night on face-offs, and senior Brad Heyl gave a good effort at midfield.   For his efforts on the offensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Blaine Simmer as the Player of the Game with Chris Wojciak a close second.

The Tigers have two more WPSLA Division I games remaining before the playoffs.  On Friday, NA will travel to Pine-Richland and Mt. Lebanon next Tuesday.  The starting time at Pine-Richland has not been determined, but the NA-Lebo game will begin at 8:15 pm at Mt. Lebanon Stadium.

SECOND HALF RALLY GIVES TIGERS A 14-8 VICTORY OVER SEWICKLEY ACADEMY

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Trailing 7-6 at halftime, the Tigers outscored Sewickley Academy 8-1 in the second half on their way to a 14-8 victory over the Panthers at Newman Stadium on Friday night.  On Senior Night, NA seniors did most of the damage as attack Tim Huckestein led the way with four goals.  Senior attack Chris Wojciak, senior midfield Dylan Baun, and sophomore attack Blaine Simmer all tallied three times for the victorious Tigers.

Sewickley took a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game when junior attack Josh Snyder scored.  Huckestein came back to tie the game with his first goal at the 8:20 mark, and Wojciak gave NA its first lead of the game less than two minutes later.  Junior attack Scott Federolf tied the game at 2-2 with 4:24 remaining in the first quarter.  Snyder then scored two goals in the next minute to give the Panthers a 4-2 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish until late in the third quarter.  Baun was able to score with the Tigers a man up to cut the margin to 4-3 with just 19 seconds left.  Sewickley took a 4-3 lead into the second quarter.

Neither team could score early in the third quarter, but Federolf put in his second goal to push the Sewickley lead to 5-3 at the 7:53 mark.  Baun's second goal cut the margin to 5-4 a little over a minute later, and Huckestein tied the game at 5-5 with 4:03 left in the first half.  The Tigers committed two penalties late in the quarter, and both led to man up goals by Sewickley.  Federolf scored  again at the 2:42 mark, and senior midfield Jason Hayes restored the two-goal margin with 1:03 remaining in the half.  Wojciak was able to score a key goal on a pass from Huckestein with just 18 seconds left, and the teams went to the intermission with the Panthers on top, 7-6.

The Tiger defense turned up the pressure after the break and it paid dividends for NA.  Sewickley committed a pair of penalties early in the period, and the Tigers capitalized when senior midfield Jordan Quaglia converted a pass from Wojciak to tie the score at 7-7 at the 10:10 mark.  Sewickley got the goal back quickly as Snyder tallied his third goal on a man up advantage just a minute and ten seconds later to give the Panthers an 8-7 advantage.  It would be the last Sewickley lead of the game.  Huckestein scored on a brilliant individual move to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:06 remaining.  The Tiger defensive pressure began to force Panther turnovers, and NA took its first lead since the first quarter when Blaine Simmer took a pass from Huckestein and beat junior goalie Andrew Jayson to give NA an 8-7 advantage.  Baun then made the play of game.  The senior midfield scooped up a ground ball at midfield, got around a Sewickley defender, and then beat Jayson high over the left shoulder to increase the Tiger lead to 10-8 with 2:38 left in the quarter.  After a Panther penalty, Wojciak was able to score on a pass from Huckestein as the Tiger caught Jayson out of the net and the NA lead went to 11-8.  Despite the error, Jayson kept Sewickley close with several acrobatic saves.  Wojciak hit the post twice during the latter minutes of the period also, but the Tigers still took an 11-8 lead into the final period.

It was all NA in the fourth quarter.  Continuing the defensive pressure, the Panthers continued to turn over the ball.  Blaine Simmer was able to score twice within a 21 second period midway through the quarter as the Tiger lead went to 13-8.  Huckestein's fourth goal on another great individual effort put the finishing touches on a come from behind 14-8 victory over the Panthers.

Leading the Tiger defense were seniors Nick Uhler, Chris Bollinger and Chris Slowik who were able to hold the high scoring Panthers to just one goal in the second half.  Senior Dan Torie was outstanding in goal for NA making many big saves during the second half.  Tiger coach John Rullan made a strategic move late in the first half when he inserted Wojciak to take face offs.  The move paid off as Wojciak was successful in contesting the Panthers who had won faceoffs earlier.

It was a great team effort by the Tigers who improved the Division I record to 2-2, their overall mark to 10-3.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Dylan Baun as the Player of the Game.  The Tigers will be home again on Tuesday when they continue play in Division I against the Franklin Regional Panthers.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 8:00 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:15 pm.

SHADY SIDE EDGES TIGERS IN OVERTIME, 8-7

Trailing 6-2 at halftime, the Tigers mounted a furious second-half comeback capped by a goal from senior attack Chris Wojciak with just two seconds remaining in regulation time to tie the score at 7-7.  Unfortunately for NA, Shady Side picked up the winning goal 3:42 into overtime to send the Tigers to their second Division I loss.  Wojciak and senior Dylan Baun had three goals each to pace the Tigers.  Senior Tim Huckestein added a goal and two assists.

Shady Side jumped off to an early lead scoring twice in the first 4:28 of the game.  Baun answered on an assist from Wojciak to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 2:31 mark.  The Indians came back to push the margin to 3-1 with just one second remaining in the quarter.  In the second quarter, Shady Side increased the lead with a goal at the 9:17 mark.  Once again, Baun scored with Huckestein assisting to cut the margin to 4-2.  The Indians added two more goals before halftime to take a 6-2 advantage to the intermission.

The Tiger defense picked up in the third quarter, but the Tigers could score only one goal as Wojciak hit the net at the 8:30 mark on another Huckestein assist.  The Indians came back to answer with a goal with 3:03 remaining.  The third quarter ended with NA trailing 7-3.  In the final period, the Tigers would not be denied.  NA scored four unanswered goals to tie the game.  Wojciak made it 7-4 at the 10:55 mark, and Baun added his third goal with 4:42 remaining to cut the lead to 7-5.  The Tiger defense, led by senior defense Chris Slowik picked up the pressure and forced Shady Side turnovers.  With 1:34 left, Huckestein tallied an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 7-6.  With time running out, Slowik forced another SSA turnover and Wojciak was able to get the equalizer just before time ran out.

In the second half, seniors Randy Burns and Matt Davis won five of six faceoffs to spark the comeback.  On defense, seniors Nick Uhler, Chris Bollinger, and Slowik played a great second half, allowing only one goal.

With the winning goal in overtime, Shady Side improved their Division I record to 2-0 while the Tigers dropped to 1-2.  The overall NA mark is now 9-3.  The Tigers will be back in action again next Friday night when they host Sewickley Academy at Newman Stadium in an 8:15 pm contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 8:00 pm.

TIGERS STOP UPPER ST. CLAIR, 12-6

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior attack Chris Wojciak scored four goals and added four assists to lead the Tigers to a 12-6 victory over the Upper St. Clair Panthers at Newman Stadium on Monday night.  Senior Jordan Quaglia and sophomore Blaine Simmer tallied three goals each while seniors Mike Belliveau and Tim Huckestein added a goal each as the Tigers evened their Division I record at 1-1.

The Panthers got on the board first when midfielder Craig Morgan scored just 52 seconds into the game.  Wojciak tied the score at 1-1 coming from behind the goal to beat goalie Travis Nacey at the 7:15 mark.  Quaglia's unassisted goal less than two minutes later gave NA a 2-1 lead.  After USC picked up a pair of penalties, the Panthers got a lucky bounce that Dean Nacey converted on a two-man down disadvantage with 4:24 remaining.  Wojciak came back with his second goal to put NA back on top just 1:35 later.  In a strange twist, NA was able to score with two-men down also when Quaglia scored on a great pass from Wojciak to give the Tigers a 4-2 advantage after one quarter.

The Tiger defense picked it up in the second quarter and forced numerous turnovers that led to scoring opportunities.  Quaglia finally found the net at the 7:57 mark with the only goal of the quarter as the Tigers took a 5-2 lead into the intermission.

The scoring picked up in the third quarter.  Belliveau scored on his first appearance in the game when he took a perfect pass from Blaine Simmer to give NA a 6-2 lead at the 9:42 mark.  Wojciak scored his third goal a little over a minute later as the Tigers opened a five-goal lead at 7-2.  USC responded quickly as Morgan won a face-off and two passes later Dean Nacey scored to cut the lead to 7-3.  Morgan was outstanding on face-offs throughout the game.  Blaine Simmer answered for the Tigers and the lead went back to five at 8-3 with 6:16 remaining in the period.  Huckestein made it 9-3 at the 2:30 mark before Morgan was awarded a disputed goal.  It appeared that the ball hit the crossbar and deflected far across the field, but the referee stated that the ball was in the goal first.  After three quarters, NA held a 9-4 advantage.

The Tigers put the game out of reach with a pair of goals early in the final period.  Wojciak set up Simmer again to make it 10-4, and Wojciak tallied his fourth goal of the game to open the margin to 11-4 at the 9:38 mark.  At this point, NA Coach John Rullan emptied his bench, allowing most of the NA players some varsity playing time.  The Panthers scored a pair of goals to cut the lead to 11-6, but Blaine Simmer put the finishing touches on the victory with an easy drop in goal as the Tigers completed a 12-6 victory.

Defensively, the Tigers had an outstanding evening.  The play of seniors Nick Uhler, Chris Bollinger, Matt Davis, and Randy Burns made it difficult for USC to do much offensively.  Senior Dan Torie was active in the net making some tough saves and clearing the ball quickly to set up counter-attacks.  Overall, it was a good team performance for the Tigers.

As mentioned earlier, the win gave NA a 1-1 record in Division I play as they move into the critical part of the schedule.  For his play, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Chris Wojciak as the Player of the Game.  The Tigers will be on the road on Thursday when they travel to Shady Side Academy for an important division game.  The scheduled starting time is set for 4:30 pm.
