NORTH ALLEGHENY VARSITY BOYS' LACROSSE

*GAME SUMMARIES*

TIGERS DUMP CARLISLE, 11-6

In an afternoon contest at Newman Stadium on Saturday, the Tigers prevailed over eastern power Carlisle winning by an 11-6 score.  Sophomore Blaine Simmer tallied four goals while senior Chris Wojciak scored three to pace the Tigers to the victory.  Senior Tim Huckestein added a pair of goals and four assists, while seniors Jordan Quaglia and Dylan Baun scored a goal each.  Senior Garrett Simmer picked up an assist.

After Carlisle scored first at the 10:51 mark of the first quarter, Wojciak tied the game a little over a minute later.  The Tigers added two more goals to take a 3-2 advantage after the first period of play.  It was all NA in the second quarter as the Simmers scored three times and Quaglia once to give the Tigers a 7-2 lead at the break.

The Tigers increased the margin to 9-3 after three quarters.  Carlisle rallied at the beginning of the fourth quarter to score three goals, but tallies by Huckestein and Wojciak finished the job as NA went on to the 11-6 victory.  Senior Dan Torie was strong in goal stopping 13 Carlisle shots.  On defense, seniors Nick Uhler, Chris Bollinger, and Chris Slowik played aggressively and almost without penalties.  The Tigers were strong on face-offs with nine wins between senior Randy Burns, senior Matt Davis, and Justin Spagnuolo.

NA improved their record to 8-2 on the season as they get ready for a Division I encounter tonight against Upper St. Clair.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will broadcast the game with Upper St. Clair LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 8:00 pm.  Be sure to join Don Vandergrift and Chuck Torie for all the action with game time set for 8:15 pm.

TIGERS REBOUND TO CRUSH SHALER, 14-1

After losing a tough game at Peters Township on Friday night, the Tigers came out strong on Monday night and easily defeated the Shaler Titans, 14-1, at Shaler.  After Shaler tied the score at 1-1, NA scored the next thirteen goals to win going away.  The Titans managed only three shots against the tough NA defense.

Coach John Rullan was able to utilize his entire bench during the win.  Junior Jeff Kristan led the way with four goals while sophomore Glenn Stanzione scored the hat trick and added two assists.  Two Tigers had two goals each - senior Jordan Quaglia, and senior Mike Belliveau.  Sophomore Blaine Simmer had a goal and two assists, junior Conor McGrann posted a goal and and an assist, and Hoskinson tallied a goal.  Junior Sean McHugh and seniors Dylan Baun and Joe Smarto all picked up assists.

On the defensive end, senior Greg Franz and senior Long Stick Middie Alex Stanzione had good games.  Backup goalie Matt Rahenkamp shared time in goal with senior Dan Torie and helped hold Shaler to just one goal. 

The win improved the NA record to 7-2 on the season.  The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Carlisle at Newman Stadium in a 3:00 pm contest.

PETERS TOWNSHIP NIPS TIGERS, 6-5

The Tigers dropped a tough 6-5 decision to the Peters Township Indians at Peters Township on Friday night.  The Indians scored four quick goals to jump off to a 4-0 lead.  NA score twice before halftime to cut the deficit to 4-2 after two quarters.  The Tigers continued their scoring run to tie the game at 4-4 after three quarters.  In the final period, the Tigers scored to take a 5-4 advantage.  Peters Township was able to pick a pair of goals with NA a man down,however,  that gave the Indians the one-goal victory.

For the Tigers, senior Jordan Quaglia and sophomore Blaine Simmer scored a pair of goals each.  Senior Joe Smarto also scored for NA.  Senior Dan Torie played well in goal stopping eight Peters Township shots.

The loss dropped NA to 0-1 in Division I play, while the overall mark fell to 6-2.  NA will be back in action tonight when they travel to Shaler for a 7:30 pm game.

SIMMERS LEAD NA TO 7-3 VICTORY OVER SENECA VALLEY

Sophomore Blaine Simmer had three goals and an assist and senior Garrett Simmer added two more as the Tigers bounced back from the first loss of the season with a 7-3 victory at Seneca Valley on Monday night.  Seniors Jordan Quaglia and Dylan Baun also scored for the Tigers as they improved their record to 6-1 on the season.  

On a very cold night on a wet muddy field, the Tigers once again were able to play well defensively.  After Seneca Valley scored first with 11:10 remaining in the first quarter, the Tigers tied the game a minute later.  Another goal four minutes later gave NA the lead for good.   Senior goalie Dan Torie came up with 13 saves to preserve the victory.

With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 6-1 on the season.  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette released their first rankings of the season and have NA ranked second behind Shady Side Academy.  We will continue to post the rankings each week on the website.

TIGERS FALL TO HUDSON RALLY IN FOURTH QUARTER

The Tigers played the Hudson Explorers, one of the top teams in Ohio, even for three quarters on Saturday night before Hudson rallied for a 10-7 victory.  Senior Dylan Baun had the hat trick for NA with senior Joe Smarto and sophomore Blaine Simmer adding a pair of goals each.

Hudson started off strong with three quick goals to open a 3-0 lead.  Senior goalie Dan Torie kept the Tigers in the game with several tough saves.  Simmer got the Tigers on the board, scoring with only 38 seconds left.  Hudson held a 3-1 lead after one period of play.

In the second quarter, the Tigers outscored the Explorers, 4-3, to pull within one at halftime.  Baun scored all three of his goals and Simmer added his second.  The teams went to the intermission with Hudson holding a 6-5 advantage.

In the third quarter, Smarto tied the game early in the period, and it remained 6-6 going into the final stanza.  In the final quarter, Hudson erupted for three quick goals again to take a 9-6 lead  with 6:05 remaining.  Smarto came back to cut the lead to 9-7 with 5:54 left.  Hudson finally got the insurance at the 3:32 mark.  The Tigers had opportunities late in the game but could not beat the Hudson goalie.

The Tigers got outstanding defensive play throughout the game.  In the back, seniors Nick Uhler, Chris Slowik, Chris Bollinger, and Brad Heyl kept the Tigers in the game.  At midfield, it was the play of seniors Matt Davis, Alex Stanzione, and Randy Burns that countered many of the Explorer attacks.  Torie continued to play well throughout the game.

Sophomore Glenn Stanzione had a pair of assists with seniors Garrett Simmer and Jordan Quaglia picking up single assists.  It was a great effort on the part of the Tigers, who lost to Hudson, 12-2, last year.  Coach Rullan said, "It was the most complete, intense game that I have ever seen them play."  The Tigers will be back in action tonight when they travel to Seneca Valley to meet the Raiders in an 8:00 pm contest.

TIGERS WIN TWO ON VIRGINIA TRIP

The Tigers completed a two-game sweep over Virginia teams over the weekend.  On Friday, NA downed Bishop O'Connell, 10-5.  Senior Dylan Baun scored three goals while senior Chris Wojciak added a pair of goals and four assists.  Senior Jordan Quaglia and sophomore Blaine Simmer both had a pair of goals in the victory.

The Tigers got off to a quick start scoring the first three goals.  Baun scored just 1:30 into the game to give NA a 1-0 lead.  Wojciak and Simmer added a pair of goals within sixteen seconds and the Tigers had a 3-0 advantage with just 2:32 played.  After O'Connell scored, Wojciak answered at the 5:10 mark to give NA a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, O'Connell cut the lead to 4-2 halfway through the period.  Senior Tim Huckestein came back to score with 4:45 remaining and Baun added his second goal at the 2:39 mark as NA took a 6-2 advantage as the teams went to the intermission.

Once again, Bishop O'Connor scored first in the third quarter to cut the lead to 6-3.  Senior Jordan Quaglia answered to push the lead back to four.  After O'Connell scored again, Quaglia tallied his second goal of the quarter as the Tigers led, 8-4, after three periods of play.

In the fourth quarter, Simmer added his second goal while Baun picked up his third as NA put the game out of reach at 10-4.  O'Connell added a later goal, but the Tigers had won their fourth straight with a 10-5 victory.

On Saturday, the Tigers crushed Woodbridge, 17-2, for their fifth consecutive victory.  NA built a ten-goal halftime lead and cruised to the victory.  Junior attackmen Ben Cover and Jeff Kristan both scored a pair of goals while sophomore attack Blaine Simmer added another.

The Tigers will be home on Saturday night to meet the tough Hudson High team from Ohio as part of Laxfest. (see Sports Update).  Game time on Saturday is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

CENTRAL FALLS TO NA, 12-5

The Tigers defeated the Central Catholic Vikings, 12-5, at Newman Stadium on Thursday night for their third consecutive victory.  NA will travel to Virginia for a pair of games over the weekend.  Tonight, the Tigers will face Bishop O'Connell in a 5:30 pm contest while tomorrow it will be Woodbridge in a 7:00 pm game.

TIGERS TROUNCE FOX CHAPEL, 13-2

The Tigers won their second straight game in a 13-2 victory over the Fox Chapel Foxes on Tuesday night at Fox Chapel.  NA will host Central Catholic tomorrow night at Newman Stadium.  Game time is scheduled for 8:15 pm.

TIGERS BLAST MANHEIM, 16-7, IN OPENER

Seniors Chris Wojciak and Tim Huckestein scored six goals each as the Tigers opened their 2004 season in impressive fashion with a 16-7 victory over Manheim Township.  Senior Jordan Quaglia tallied a pair of goals while senior Dylan Baun and Blane Simmer scored the other NA goals.  Senior Dan Torie stopped ten Manheim shots to earn the victory in goal for the Tigers.

The game was played at Upper St. Clair High School on Friday night because weather conditions made Newman Stadium unplayable.  The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Fox Chapel.
