LEBO EDGES TIGERS, 8-6, FOR FIFTH
TITLE IN EIGHT YEARS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers battled top-ranked Mt. Lebanon even for most of the WPSLA Championship, but Lebo was able to hold on for an 8-6 victory to take the title.  Senior attack Jose Rodriguez and junior midfield Andrew Rullan led NA with two goals each.  Juniors Adam Mills and Brian Faber also scored for the Tigers.

Neither team could score early in the quarter, but Mt. Lebanon had the best chances.  Sophomore goalie Chris Rullan made two tough saves and Lebo hit the goal post on another chance as the game remained scoreless.  Chris White gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead with a shot from the left side at the 5:01 mark.  The Tigers answered quickly when Mills came out from behind the goal to score on a pass from senior midfield Pat Coleman with 4:39 remaining.  Less than a minute later, Viletto found Rullan open in the middle and the WPIAL Player of the Year converted to give the Tigers their first lead at 2-1.  With time running out, Lebo took advantage of a Tiger turnover to tie the game.  Jeremy Tissenbaum broke down the middle to score with just fifteen seconds left as the Blue Devils tied the score at 2-2 after one quarter.

Early in the second quarter, White sent home a rebound from right in front of the goal to put Lebo on top again, 3-2.  After an NA time out called by Coach John Rullan, the Tigers tied the game at 3-3 when Viletto set up Andrew Rullan for his second goal of the game at the 9:02 mark.  Neither team scored again in the quarter, but the Tigers had to kill off a penalty to keep the game tied.  The teams went to the intermission with the score tied at 3-3.

Mt. Lebanon stole a clearing pass to score a goal in the first minute of the second half, but it was disallowed because of an illegal screen on NA goalie Chris Rullan.  Two minutes later, Marasti came out from behind the goal to score and give Lebo a 4-3 advantage at the 9:33 mark.  With NA a man-up, Rodgriguez tied the game with Viletto getting the assist with 9:01 remaining in the period.  Less than a minute later, Faber put NA ahead again with a sidearm shot from ten yards out.  With NA ahead, 5-4, Marasti stole an NA pass and raced in alone on Rullan.  After some quick fakes, Marasti scored his second of the game to tie the game.  The play seemed to energize the Blue Devils who scored two goals in a period of 36 seconds to take a 7-5 lead.  Tissenbaum tallied his second and Jameson Hall sent home a rebound with 2:14 left.  Viletto brought NA to within one with an outstanding play as time was running out in the quarter.  The Tiger senior intercepted a Lebo clear and found Rodriguez open in front of the Blue Devil goal.  Rodriguez quickly beat Mt. Lebanon goalie Perk Oetinger to cut the margin to 7-6 as time ran out in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to Mt. Lebanon.  After the Tigers failed to score on a man-up at the 8:00 minute mark, Marasti scored from the right side to extend the lead to 8-6 with 6:05 left.  Lebo then went to a ball control game and did not allow the Tigers many chances.  With the Blue Devils holding the ball, the Tigers took a penalty at the 4:00 mark.  NA was unable to take the ball away and Lebo ran out the clock on their way to the championship.

It was a great effort by the Tigers, but the playoff experience of Mt. Lebanon may have been the deciding factor.  Lebo scored two goals directly as a result of NA turnovers and added another after taking the ball back in their own territory.  The NA defense did a good job of holding the potent Lebo offense under control for most of the game.  Chris Rullan was tough in goal making some key saves to keep the Tigers in the game early.  For his effort in recording five assists, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Brian Viletto as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the Tigers finished their season with an overall record of 13-6 while earning the silver medal in the league playoffs.  The game marked the first title game appearance for NA while Mt. Lebanon was playing in their fourteenth in the eighteen years the title has been contested.

VILETTO'S GOAL SINKS CENTRAL, 6-5, TO SEND TIGERS TO WPSLA FINAL

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior attack Brian Viletto scored with 1:12 remaining to give the Tigers an exciting 6-5 victory over Central Catholic in the semifinals of the WPSLA Division I playoffs at Peters Township on Wednesday night.  Senior attack Jose Rodriguez scored four goals and an assist to pace NA.  Junior attack Adam Mills added a goal and an assist for the winning Tigers.  Viletto and senior midfield Pat Coleman also had assists for NA.

Central jumped off to an early 1-0 lead when C.J. Burke scored on an assist from Will Donley just one minute into the contest.  Rodriguez came back with an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1 at the 8:52 mark.  Burke scored again to put Central up, 2-1, after a pass from behind the goal by John Leiendecker.  The Tigers countered with a long pass from 35 yards out by Coleman to a wide open Rodriguez who tied the game with 2:49 remaining in the quarter.  Neither team scored again in the period as the game remained tied at 2-2.

Neither team was able to score in the second period as defense prevailed.  Viletto hit the post with 6:00 remaining but the rebound went high and wide.  The NA defense, led by senior Mike Passodelis, freshman Lee Carrozza, and junior Austin Amos, held the Vikings scoreless as the teams went to the intermission still tied at 2-2.

In the third quarter, defense and Central's methodical offense kept the game tied at 2 until the Tigers took the lead late in the period.  Viletto came out from behind the goal and found Rodriguez open just to the left of Central goalie Andrew Heinreicher.  Rodriguez one-timed the ball into the net to give NA a 3-2 advantage going into the final quarter.

Central's C.J. Burke then took over early in the final stanza.  Burke scored to tie the game just 1:43 into the period.  Burke beat the NA defense again at the 6:31 mark to give the Vikings a 4-3 lead.  With time running down, Rodriguez set up Mills from behind the net and the NA junior tied the game at 4-4 with 2:32 remaining.  On the crucial ensuing faceoff, senior midfield Andrew Rullan drove the ball straight ahead and sent it toward the Central goal.  Mills fed Rodriguez who scored his fourth of the game to put the Tigers on top, 5-4, just seven seconds later.  Central was not finished, however.  Pat Nigborowicz was able to tie the game with 1:42 left with a hard shot from the right side.  Once again, the Tigers came up with the faceoff.  After a good play by senior midfield Darren LePere brought the ball into Central territory, NA Coach John Rullan called a time out.  When play resumed, Viletto took the ball, cut to his left, and broke down the middle.  His hard shot beat Heinreicher to give the Tigers a 6-5 advantage with just 1:12 left.  The Vikings pressured the NA goal in the remaining time but the defense and sophomore goalie Chris Rullan held Central off the board.  The Tigers took home a hard earned 6-5 victory.

It was a good team victory by NA with many players contributing.  It was payback of sorts for the Tigers who had dropped a three-overtime game to Central earlier in the year.  The Vikings had also knocked NA from the playoffs in last year's semifinals.  For his efforts at the offensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Jose Rodriguez as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers advanced to the WPSLA Division I title game for the first time in school history.  NA will meet Mt. Lebanon, a 10-6 winner over Bethel Park last night, in the championship game at Quaker Valley on Saturday.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 4:45 pm.

Lebanon, 12-11, in overtime at Newman Stadium on Friday night.  Senior attack Jose Rodriguez led the way with five goals with senior attack Brian Viletto chipping in with a pair of goals and four assists, including assists on four of Rodriguez's five tallies.  Senior midfield Andrew Rullan added three goals, including the game winner, while sophomore attack Grady Wirth and senior midfield Patrick Coleman also scored for the Tigers.

The game went back and forth all evening with neither team able to take more than a two-goal lead.  With the game tied at the end of regulation, Andrew Rullan again was able to score the winning goal, time in overtime.  Sophomore goalie Chris Rullan stopped 17 Blue Devil shots to help make the difference in the victory.

With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 10-4 on the season.  On Wednesday night, NA will travel to Upper St. Clair to meet the Panthers in an 8:00 pm non-division contest.  NA will travel to Hudson (OH) on Friday night for another 8:00 pm contest as the regular season ends.

TIGERS USE FAST START TO CRUISE OVER
 SHADY SIDE ACADEMY, 14-6

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers jumped off to a 7-3 lead after one quarter and never looked back as they defeated Shady Side Academy, 14-6, on Senior Night at Newman Stadium on Wednesday night.  Senior midfield Andrew Rullan had four goals and an assist, senior attack Brian Viletto also added four goals and an assist, and senior attack Jose Rodriguez posted three goals and two assists to lead NA.

The Tigers came out strong scoring twice in the first 1:07 of the game.  Rodriguez set up senior attack Matt Sherbin in front of the goal for the game's first goal just 39 seconds into the contest.  Rullan made it 2-0 when he circled to his right and bounced in a shot from 12 yards out.  After Rory Cosgrove scored on a left-handed shot at the 9:00 minute mark, Viletto scored from in front of the goal with NA a man up to make it 3-1.  Kris Massaro picked off an errant NA pass in front of the goal and scored to cut the lead to 3-2 with 6:23 remaining in the quarter.  It was as close as the Indians would get.  The Tigers came back to score the next four goals.  Viletto went across the middle to score and increase the lead to 4-2.  Rullan took the face off and raced all the way down the field to score the fifth NA goal.  Viletto collected a ground ball after a scramble near mid field and went in all alone to add another tally to make it a 6-2 game.  Rodriguez finished the run off a pass from Rullan as the Tigers pushed the margin to 7-2.  Massaro scored his second goal with SSA a man up with just 42 seconds remaining, but the Tigers took a commanding 7-3 lead into the second quarter.

With NA a man up because of an illegal stick call against Shady Side, Viletto made the Indians pay with Rodriguez assisting 23 seconds into the period.  Viletto set up Rodriguez for another goal 24 seconds later as the lead went to 9-3.  Cosgrove beat an NA double team to score his second goal and cut the margin to 9-4 with 9:38 left in the half.  Junior midfield Ben Sorek answered with 2:56 remaining with a shot from the right side from 12 yards out.  The Tigers went to the intermission with a 10-4 lead.

Shady Side came back after the half time break to score two quick goals and cut the lead to 10-6.  Sophomore Andrew Viehe scored from the left side with a delayed penalty waiting to make it 10-5 at the 8:56 mark.  Cosgrove scored his third goal ten seconds later to reduce the NA lead to four.  After an NA time out, the Tiger regrouped to regain control of the game.  Rullan bounced in a wicked shot from 15 yards away to push the lead back to five at 11-6 with 3:41 left.  Just nine seconds later, Rodriguez was wide open after Rullan won yet another face off.  The NA senior calmly beat backup goalie Andrew Kleist as the Tigers restored the six-goal margin at 12-6.  The third quarter ended with the Tigers holding the six-goal advantage.

Coach Rullan took advantage of the Tiger lead to substitute freely in the final period.  Rullan scored early in the period after sophomore Grady Wirth came out from behind the goal to set up Rullan's fourth goal of the game.  Shady Side was two men down because of another illegal stick call and an unsportsmanlike penalty.  Wirth scored later in the period with the Indians two men down again with senior David Belliveau picking up the assist.  The Tigers held off Shady Side for the remainder of the contest to pick up an important 14-6 division win.

It was a good win for the Tigers on Senior Night.  Twelve NA seniors were honored before the game along with their parents.  In the game, the Tigers used their superior team speed to gain the advantage and take the early lead.  For his efforts on the night, the North Allegheny Sports Network named senior Brian Viletto as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers completed division play with a 4-1 record and second place finish.  Overall, NA improved their record to 9-4.  The Tigers will host top-ranked Mt. Lebanon tomorrow night at Newman Stadium with game time set for 9:00 pm.

ANDREW RULLAN LEADS TIGER COMEBACK OVER PETERS TOWNSHIP, 7-6

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior midfield Andrew Rullan scored three goals including the game winner in the fourth quarter on Friday night at Newman Stadium as the Tigers came from behind to defeat Peters Township, 7-6.  The Indians had taken a 5-1 lead early in the third quarter.  Senior attack Brian Viletto, junior attack Adam Mills, senior attack Matt Sherbin and senior midfield Patrick Coleman also scored for NA.

Peters Township came out strong early in the game to take a 2-0 lead.  Spencer Smith scored on an assist by Sean Paul Mauro to put the Indians ahead, 1-0, at the 7:19 mark.  A minute and a half later with PT a man-up, Smith set up Evan Yeckley who scored from ten yards out to make it a 2-0 contest.  The Tigers rallied and controlled play for the remaining time in the quarter.  Possession paid off when Mills scored on a rebound with 2:25 remaining in the quarter.  Peters Township took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter belonged to the Indians as they controlled play with a strong defensive effort.  Andy Grech raced down the middle to score the third Indian goal with 7:28 left in the half to push the lead to 3-1.  Jason Powell collected a rebound and took it to the net for the fourth PT goal with 2:41 remaining.  The Tigers lost their poise near the end of the first half picking up a series of penalties with 15 seconds on the clock.  The half ended with Peters Township holding a 4-1 advantage on the scoreboard and two-man advantage on the field.

The Indians made NA pay early in the third quarter when Smith scored his second goal with PT two-men up just eight seconds into the half.  The Tigers killed off the remaining penalty time and gradually began to control play.  Midway through the quarter, senior attack Matt Sherbin came out from behind the net and finished after a good pass from Andrew Rullan.  Although NA had a ball possession edge for the remainder of the quarter, they did not score as P-T took a 5-2 lead into the final period.

The Tigers came alive in the fourth quarter.  Rullan won the face-off, raced into the Indian zone, and bounced a shot into the goal just 20 seconds in the period to cut the lead to 5-3.  The goal seemed to energize the Tigers.  Coleman bounced a low shot into the net just 1:40 later as the Tigers cut the deficit to just one at 5-4.  Viletto made a great individual effort to tie the game when he broke out from behind the Indian goal and scored on a strong left-handed shot at the 7;24 mark.  NA continued to keep control of the ball and tied the game on a beautiful passing combination with Coleman finding Rullan open in the middle and the NA senior converted to give the Tigers their first lead with 3:28 left in the game.  After an NA time out, the Indians made a strong defensive stand to recapture the ball with time running down.  Smith raced down the right side and completed his hat trick to tie the game with 1:18 remaining.  On the ensuing face off, Rullan did it again!  After a battle for the ball, Rullan scooped up the ground ball, avoided two defenders with dodges, and beat PT goalie Michael Moretti to put the Tigers on top for good, 7-6, with 1:00 remaining.  After an official's call gave the ball to P-T, the Indians called a time out with 49 seconds left.  Smith again tried the right side but a good defensive effort by senior MF Darren LePere cut down the angle.  Smith's centering pass was intercepted by sophomore goalie Christopher Rullan who cleared the ball to midfield as time ran out.

It was a big victory for the Tigers who had seen earlier one-goal leads fail.  Christopher Rullan was tough in net for NA along with the Tiger defensive corps who turned up the pressure in the second half allowing just two PT goals.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Andrew Rullan as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 7-4 on the season.  NA will host Troy (OH) tomorrow afternoon in a non-division contest.  Game time at Newman Stadium is now scheduled for 12:30 pm.

TIGER DEFENSE STOPS PINE-RICHLAND, 5-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers won their second straight division game with a 5-1 win over Pine-Richland at Newman Stadium on Wednesday night.  Senior attack Jose Rodriguez scored twice and the NA defense backed up sophomore goalie Christopher Rullan holding the Rams to just one goal.

The Tigers controlled play from the outset and almost scored just 1:13 into the game.  Junior attack Adam Mills got free in front of the goal but his score was waived off because he was in the crease.  NA continued to pressure the P-R goal but good play by Ram goalie Evan Malchano kept the Tigers off the board.  Rodriguez finally beat Malchano after a good pass from junior midfield Brian Faber.  Rodriguez's low shot from eight yards out gave NA a 1-0 advantage with 5:06 remaining in the quarter.  In spite of continual pressure and several man-up advantages, the Tigers could not score again and took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter.

Early in the second stanza, senior attack Brian Viletto let a long attempt go that bounced past the Ram defenders and goalie into the net to make it a 2-0 NA lead.  The Tiger defense continued to stymie the Rams throughout the quarter.  With 4:34 remaining, Mills stole the ball in the offensive zone, raced past the defenders and beat Malchano to make it a 3-0 Tiger lead.  The half ended with NA holding the three-goal advantage.

The Tigers put the game away with two quick goals early in the third quarter.  Senior midfield Andrew Rullan connected on a long shot that cleanly beat Malchano at the 10:14 mark to increase the NA lead to 4-0.  Faber picked up his second assist on the goal.  Just 21 seconds later, senior midfield Darren LePere got past the Ram defense and set up Rodriguez in front of the P-R goal.  The Tiger senior scored his second goal of the game to extend the margin to 5-0.  The Tigers would not score again but continued to attack the Ram goal for most of the remainder of the period.  Late in the period, the Rams finally scored when Conrad Naugler converted from the right side with 53 seconds left.  The Tigers took a commanding 5-1 advantage into the final period.

Coach John Rullan cleared his bench in the fourth quarter with NA clearly in control.  The Rams threatened midway through the period, but the NA defense stopped any attempts with Christopher Rullan standing tall in goal.  Neither team scored in the final period as the Tigers took a 5-1 victory.

It was a good overall performance for the Tigers with the defense stepping up.  Pine-Richland had few real scoring opportunities and when they did have chances Rullan was there to make the save.  For his efforts in goal, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Christopher Rullan as the Player of the Game with assists going to his defense.

With the win, the Tigers improved their division record to 2-0, the overall mark to 4-2.  NA will host Hampton on Sunday afternoon in a non-division contest.  Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
