NA Rowers Claim Record Number of Medals at Stotesbury Cup Regatta

Friday, May 18 & Saturday, May 19, 2007

by Donna Hudson

NA’s rowers showed pure Tiger style as they snatched up five medals at this weekend’s Stotesbury Cup Regatta on Philadelphia’s fabled Schuylkill River, a new team record at the event.  Against the backdrop of historic Boathouse Row, NA put fourteen boats out to face their toughest competition of the year.  Nine of those boats advanced to the semi-finals and six to finals.  In the end, NA brought home two silver medals in the women’s events, and three bronze medals – one for the women and two in the men’s events.  It was the third year in a row that the Tigers earned a silver medal in the Girls’ Senior Quad race and the second year in row for a bronze in the Boys’ Senior Quad race.

”I am very pleased with the skill and competitive spirit shown by the NA team on the water this weekend”, noted NA head coach Mike Bergen Jr.  “We challenged teams from the strongest rowing programs in the country and came away with top finishes.  That is quite an accomplishment.”

First run in 1927, Stotesbury Cup is the oldest and largest regatta for high school students in the United States.  This year’s regatta brought together 174 teams representing 124 cities in 15 states and Ontario, Canada, including crews from as far away as Florida and Texas.  In total, 849 boats raced in the two-day event.

Silver medal winners for NA were Briana Pittman, Erin Dauson, Kathleen Janosco and Cherith Elliott (Girls’ Senior Quad); and Maria Deiuliis and Tori Horn (Girls’ Lightweight Double).  Bronze medal winners were Olivia Klipa and Jessica Kelly (Girls’ Senior Double); Brian Marcus, Bill Francis, Mark Nolfi and Steve Marcus (Boys’ Senior Quad); and Adam Reckless, Taylor Sandora, Josh Weis and Alan Meininghaus (Boys’ Junior Quad).  Finalists were Logan Ellis and Zac O’Neill (Boys’ Lightweight Double) and semi-finalists were Lauren Skoog (Girls’ Senior Single); Jenny Hudson and Michelle Weaver (Girls’ Junior Double); and Ryan Mohan and Jim Rectenwald (Boys’ Junior Double).

This concludes the Tigers regular spring season.  Select crews will participate in the USRowing National Youth Regatta in early June and the full team will resume their racing schedule in early October.

Summer camps for NA students interested in learning more about rowing will be held in June and July.  Check the team’s website, www.narowing.org, for information as it becomes available.

The two-day event, held on Lake Arthur at Moraine State Park, closed with the Tigers capturing the second place finish in the Men’s Junior Lightweight Fours and third place in the Men’s JV Fours.  The Lady Tigers added a third place finish in the Women’s Junior Lightweight Fours.

Two NA Rowers Compete at Boston CRASH-B Races

by Donna Hudson

NA senior Briana Pittman and NA junior Alan Meininghaus traveled to Boston to compete in the C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships.  The event brought together over 1500 rowers from the US and numerous foreign countries in 47 events based on age and weight categories.  This year’s event was hosted by Boston University.

Pittman placed 19th out of 219 competitors in the Junior Heavyweight Women’s race, with a time of 7:29.8.  Meininghaus placed 66th out of 205 racers in the Junior Heavyweight Men’s category, with a time of 6:46.5.

Originally C.R.A.S.H. – B.s (“Charles River All-Star Has-Beens”) was a group of 1976-1980 US Olympic and World Team rowers who rowed together on Boston’s famed Charles River.  They discovered the fun of competing on the newly-introduced indoor rowing machines and held their first informal competition in 1981 at Harvard’s boathouse.  C.R.A.S.H. – B. Sprints has grown to be a well-known international winter training event in the sport of rowing.
