CANON-MAC ELIMINATES TIGERS WITH 5-4
WIN IN EIGHT INNINGS

Click here to listen to WJPA's broadcast of the game!

The Tigers rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game in the fifth inning only to see Canon-McMillan score in the eighth inning to take a 5-4 victory.  The Big Macs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on three walks and a ground ball.  A Tiger double play ended the threat.  NA tied the game in the bottom of the first.  Junior 2B Jeff Dassner singled to lead off and moved to third with two outs.  Senior 3B Dave Duffett singled to left field to score Dassner and tie the game at 1-1 after one inning.

In the second, a single and two walks loaded the bases with one out for Canon-Mac.  After Mike Hull walked to force in a run, Chris Dittmar singled scoring Chris Douglas to make it 3-1.  Senior RHP Alex Reed came in to relieve starter Sam O'Neill and got a fly out and ground out to end the inning.  In the top of the third after three straight singles loaded the baes, Spartz hit into a force play at second scoring Phil Staab to increased the lead to 4-1.  In the bottom of the fourth, junior 1B Brad Comport singled with one out, moved to second on a balk, to third on a wild pitch and scored on Sam O'Neill's ground out.  NA trailed, 4-2, after four innings.

Junior RHP Greg Piehler came in to pitch for the Tigers and shut down the Big Macs over the next three innings.  NA came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.  With two outs, senior catcher Dylan Songer singled to center field.  With junior Dan Wentz in as a courtesy runner, another balk was called moving Wentz to second.  Duffett grounded to third and reached when the throw was wide at first allowing Wentz to score.  Junior LF Jackson Boyd followed with a fly ball to right field that was dropped with Duffett scoring the tying run.

Neither team would score again until the top of the eighth inning.  Aaron Hayden singled to left field to open the inning, and Aaron Wiegel followed with another base hit to left.  After a sacrifice, Michael Spartz was intentionally walked loading the bases.  Junior RHP Mike Zelik came in to pitch for NA but walked Hull on four pitches.  Zelik was able to get the next two outs, but the Big Macs took a one-run lead into the bottom of the inning.  Matt Pierpont got the Tigers in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the victory.

It was another tough loss for the Tigers who dropped consecutive one-run games in their last two games.  With the loss, the Tigers finished the season with a final record of 15-8 including a seven-game winning streak that took them to the WPIAL semifinals.

PETERS TOWNSHIP RALLY ENDS
TIGERS' TITLE HOPES, 4-3

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning only to see Peters Township come back with four runs on their way to a 4-3 victory over NA in the semifinals of the WPIAL Quad A tournament at Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday night.  Senior 3B Dave Duffett and junior CF Jon Wilson had two hits and an RBI each to pace NA.  Senior RHP Sam O'Neill allowed only three hits in a losing effort.

The Tigers started quickly when junior 2B Jeff Dassner walked and Wilson dropped in a fly ball double to center.  With one out, Duffett singled up the middle to score Dassner with the game's first run.  Indian pitcher Nick Merich's wild throw on a pickoff attempt allowed Wilson to score as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead.  After junior LF Jackson Boyd walked, the Indians got a double play to end the inning, but NA held a 2-0 lead after one half inning of play.

After two outs in the second, the Tigers got two consecutive walks.  Wilson followed with a base hit to make it a 3-0 NA lead.  O'Neill got in trouble in the second and fourth, but was able to keep Peters Township off the board as NA held the three-run lead into the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Austin Hancock walked and Merich followed with a base hit to left field.  After a strikeout, Jim Rider walked to load the bases.  Ross's slow ground ball to the left of the mound went off O'Neill's glove with Hancock scoring to cut th lead to 3-1.  Jordan Jankowski then walked to cut the lead to 3-2.  After another strikeout, both Will McClure and Pat Gallagher drew bases-loaded walks to give the Indians a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Tigers loaded the bases with two out before Duffett was retired on a long fly ball to the wall in left field.  Merich retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the victory for the Indians.

It was not a classic pitching performance by either team.  O'Neill allowed only three hits but walked eight, including five in the fifth inning.  Merich got the win allowing just five NA hits but walked eight, and hit two.

With the loss, the NA overall record fell to 15-7 on the season.  The Tigers will meet Canon-McMillan in the third place consolation game with the winner earning the third and final spot in the PIAA playoffs. The game will be played at Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.

TIGERS HOLD OFF BETHEL PARK, 8-5, TO ADVANCE TO WPIAL SEMIFINALS

The Tigers built a 7-1 lead after two innings and held off a late Bethel Park rally to defeat the Blackhawks, 8-5, in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Quad A tournament at Washington and Jefferson College on Monday night.  Key hits for NA included a two-RBI triple by senior RF Mike O'Neill, a two-run double by junior RHP Mike Zelik and an RBI double by sophomore DH Justin Brozick.

After Bethel took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Tigers put seven on the board in the second pounding out five  hits and taking advantage of four walks by BP starter Casey Delpercio.  NA would get only two hits and three walks off reliever Nate Clark for the remainder of the game.

Tiger starter Mike Zelik was solid through the first five innings.  Zelik allowed only two earned runs on four hits while striking out five to earn the victory.  In the sixth, the Blackhawks scored three runs on only two hits and a pair of NA errors.  Junior reliever Greg Piehler pitched the final two innings allowing no earned runs, no hits, while striking out one and walking one in earning the save.  Bethel Park threatened in the seventh with a pair of runners on base with no outs but Piehler closed the door.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 15-6 on the season and advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.  NA will play the winner of the Seneca Valley/Peters Township game to be played today at the NA Senior High field with game time scheduled for 5:00 pm.  The semifinal game will be played at Washington and Jefferson on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm.

DUFFETT LEADS TIGERS TO 14-2 WIN OVER HEMPFIELD IN FIRST ROUND ACTION

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior 3B Dave Duffett had three doubles and a single good for six RBIs as the Tigers crushed Hempfield, 14-2, at Shaler's Matulevic Field on a rainy Saturday afternoon.  NA banged out 14 hits to back up the three-hit pitching of senior RHP Sam O'Neill

The Tigers jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.  After junior 2B Jeff Dassner singled to right field, junior CF Jon Wilson hit into a force play.  After senior catcher Dylan Songer flied out to center field, Wilson stole second base.  Duffett followed with a base hit to center field to score Wilson with the game's first run.  Junior LF Jackson Boyd hit a long drive to left field for a double to score Duffett to make it 2-0.  Sophomore DH Justin Brozick then singled to short right field to score Boyd as NA took a 3-0 advantage into the bottom of the inning.  O'Neill allowed just a harmless two-out walk in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the second, the Tigers struck for four more runs.  With one out, senior RF Mike O'Neill beat out an infield single.  Dassner followed with a base hit to short right, his second hit of the game.  Wilson doubled down the first base line to score O'Neill as NA took a 4-0 lead.  Songer then doubled to the fence in left center field to score both runners as the lead went to 6-0.  Duffett followed with another long drive off the left field fence to score courtesy runner Steve Martinkovich.  The three consecutive doubles gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead after an inning and a half.  In the bottom of the inning, catcher Jared Manley singled to left field for the first Hempfield hit.  With one out, O'Neill walked 3B Steve Anderson and hit sophomore RF Alex Haines with a pitch.  Left field Dan Moyer then lifted a fly ball to Boyd in left.  Manley tried to score on the play but was cut down at the plate on the throw from Boyd to Duffett to Songer as the double play ended the inning with NA holding a 7-0 lead.

Neither team scored in the third, but the Tigers added another run in the top of the fourth.  With one out, Wilson singled to right field and then stole second.  With two outs, Duffett's second double plated Wilson to make it an 8-0 NA lead.  In the bottom of the inning, center fielder Pat Costello's ground out gave Hempfield their first run of the game.  The Tigers took a commanding 8-1 lead into the fifth inning as the rain continued to fall at Matulevic Field.

In the top of the fifth, the Tigers added six more runs.  With reliever Jon Murphy on the mound for the Spartans, junior Brad Comport and Sam O'Neill both walked with one out.  After a wild pitch scored a run, Mike O'Neill followed with a base hit to score pinch runner Dan Wentz to increase the NA lead to 10-1.  With two outs, Songer walked to load the bases.  Duffett followed with another long double to left field that cleared the bases and give the Tigers a 13-1 lead.  With Alex Haines pitching for Hempfield, Boyd singled home Duffett as NA took a 14-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

With the ten-run rule in the offing and the rain falling, O'Neill quickly got the first two outs.  After two singles and two walks scored a second Hempfield run, O'Neill struck out Moyer to end the game.  The Tigers took home a 14-2 victory in the first round contest.

It was a strong performance by the Tigers in less than great weather conditions.  NA backed up a strong hitting attack with a steady performance in the field committing just one error in the game.  For his work at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named David Duffett as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals against Bethel Park, a 5-0 winner over Central Catholic on Friday.  The game will be played on Monday night at Washington and Jefferson College with game time scheduled for 7:00 pm.  The MSA Sports Network will broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.  Bob Orkwis and Mike Azadian will be the announcers.

O'NEILL LEADS TIGERS INTO PLAYOFFS WITH
3-0 SHUTOUT OF NORTH HILLS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior RHP Sam O'Neill tossed a four-hit shutout at rival North Hills on Wednesday afternoon as the Tigers downed the Indians, 3-0, in the section finale at the Senior High field.  The win put the Tigers into the WPIAL Quad A playoffs.  NA picked up a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning, and senior RF Mike O'Neill singled home a third in the sixth to secure the victory.

O'Neill started off strong by striking out the first two batters and getting a ground out for the final out in the top of the first inning.  In the bottom of the inning, junior 2B Jeff Dassner led off with a single to right center field and was sacrificed to second on a good bunt from junior CF Jon Wilson.  A balk moved Dassner to third, but the Tigers next two batters grounded out keeping Dassner from scoring.  O'Neill again got the side in order in the top of the second.  In the bottom of the inning, junior first baseman Brad Comport singled to left field with two outs.  Indian pitcher Jake Ulizzi got a strike out to end the inning.

North Hills threatened in the top of the third but could not score.  O'Neill struck out leadoff hitter Ben Wainright on a breaking ball in the dirt.  Wainright was able to reach when the ball rolled away from NA senior catcher Dylan Songer.  After 2B Zach Gall sacrificed Wainright to second, RF Jared Assisi singled to center field moving Wainright to third.  O'Neill then got a strike out and ground out to end the threat.  In the bottom of the inning, leadoff hitter Mike O'Neill walked and was sacrificed to second by Dassner.  Once again, Ulizzi got out of trouble with Wilson flying out to deep right field and Songer retired on a foul fly ball along the third base line.

In the top of the fourth, CF Ryan Fairbrother led off with a single to left field.  With one out, Fairbrother stole second and third.  O'Neill got a pair of ground outs to end the inning without the Indians scoring.  In the bottom of the inning, sophomore DH Justin Brozick singled with two outs.  With senior Steve Martinovich pinch running, Ulizzi had the NA runner picked off but Martinovich made it to second when the NH shortstop could not handle the throw.  Ulizzi again came up big, however, with a strike out to end the inning.  It was the third strikeout by Ulizzi in the frame.  After four innings, the game remained scoreless.

Not to be outdone, O'Neill struck out the side in the top of the fifth allowing only a harmless two-out single.  The Tigers finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the inning thanks to some help from the Indians.  After Sam O'Neill walked to lead off the inning, junior Dan Wentz went in as a courtesy runner.  Mike O'Neill followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Wentz to second.  Dassner then singled to short right field moving Wentz to third.  After Ulizzi got the second out on a fly ball in the infield, Songer grounded to third.  The throw to first was low and got away allowing Wentz to score the first NA run.  Senior 3B Dave Duffett then struck out at a ball in the dirt.  The Indians could not make the play on Duffett at first and Dassner ran home to make it a 2-0 Tiger lead after five innings.

After Sam O'Neill got the side in order in the top of the sixth, the Tigers added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.  With one out, Comport walked.  Wentz went in as a pinch runner and stole second.  With two outs, Mike O'Neill came through with a single to center field scoring Wentz with the third NA run.  The Tigers took a 3-0 advantage into the top of the seventh.  Scherling led off for the Indians and grounded the ball past O'Neill.  Tiger junior shortstop Nick Butterini raced far to his left, fielded the ball, and made an off balance throw to first to get the first out of the inning.  After Anthony Valeriano singled off O'Neill's glove, Songer threw out the NH runner attempting to steal second.  O'Neill finished off the Indians on a ground ball to short.

It was a good team victory for the Tigers.  O'Neill was outstanding on the mound, striking out nine and walking only one.  The NA defense was superb and played flawlessly behind O'Neill.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named senior RHP Sam O'Neill as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers completed section play with an 8-4 mark, good for a tie for third place and a playoff spot in the upcoming playoffs.

The Tigers opened a 2-0 lead after an inning and a half, but Kiski came back to tie the score with a pair of runs in the second.  The Tigers continued their hot hitting with three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to take a 12-5 lead into the seventh inning.  In the top of the seventh, Songer's home run keyed a ten-run outburst that gave the Tigers their final 22-5 margin of victory.

The Tigers defeated Butler, 7-3, at High Field in Butler on Wednesday afternoon to stay in playoff contention in Section 1-AAAA.  Senior RF Mike O'Neill tripled and junior LF Jackson Boyd doubled home a pair of runs for the winning Tigers.  Senior RHP Sam O'Neill went the distance, allowing only three hits,  to earn the victory.

Butler took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but the Tigers came back to tie it at 1-1 in the top of the third on O'Neill's triple and a Butler error.  NA took the lead with two in the fourth and one more in the fifth.  After Butler came back to cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, NA scored three in the top of the seventh behind Boyd's double to secure the win.

LATE RALLY BY SHALER BEATS TIGERS, 7-4

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After taking a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning, the Tigers saw Shaler erupt for six runs powered by a grand slam by Titan 1B Andy Gapsky to down NA, 7-4.  Senior catcher Dylan Songer led NA with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

As the game resumed in the bottom of the third inning with the score tied at 1-1, Shaler sent sophomore RHP Zach Kreke in to pitch. Kreke would go on to retire the first seven batters he faced and ultimately pick up the victory.  Tiger head coach Andy Maddix countered with senior RHP Alex Reed who allowed only a harmless single in three innings.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Songer doubled to the fence in deep right center field.  After junior Dan Wentz went in as a courtesy runner, senior 3B Dave Duffett and junior LF Jackson Boyd both drew walks to load the bases.  Sophomore DH Justin Brozick dropped a single into short right center field to score Wentz and give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.  Senior 1B Shawn Davis then grounded to third where the ball was fielded and thrown wildly at home plate.  Both Duffett and Boyd scored on the error.  The Tigers took a 4-1 advantage into the top of the seventh.

Second baseman Tom Lutz beat out an bunt single to start the inning for the Titans, and pinch-hitter Justin Yeckel drew a walk.  Junior RHP Nick Basara came in to pitch for the Tigers.  Shortstop Ed Skonieczny was safe at first on an infield single to load the bases.  CF Josh Logan was hit with a pitch to score a run, and RF Troy Handza was walked to force in another run and cut the Tiger lead to 4-3.  Junior RHP Chris Sinagra came in to pitch and was greeted by the long home run off the bat of Gapsky as the Titans grabbed a 7-4 lead.

Kreke was able to get the Tigers in order in the bottom of the seventh as Shaler took home a key 7-4 victory.  For his efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Dylan Songer as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the NA section record fell to 4-4, two games out of a playoff spot.  The overall Tiger record dropped to 8-6.  The Tigers will travel to Blackhawk tomorrow morning to meet the Cougars in an 11:00 am non-section contest.

 IN THIRD INNING

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers and Shaler were tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning when lightning and rain stopped play at the Senior High field on Wednesday afternoon.  Senior catcher Dylan Songer's first inning double plated the only NA run in the game.

In the top of the first, Shaler CF Josh Logan drew a one out walk.  Right fielder Troy Handza drilled a one-hopper to junior 2B Jeff Dassner who tabbed Logan and threw to first for the inning ending double play.  In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers struck quickly.  Dassner led off with a single to right center field, and junior CF Jon Wilson drew a walk.  Songer followed with a long double into left center field with Dassner scoring and Wilson moving to third.  Shaler LHP John Kobler then got a ground ball by senior 3B Dave Duffett that the Titans played and got an NA runner in a rundown for the first out.  Kobler followed with a pair of strike outs to get out of the inning.  NA led, 1-0, after one inning of play.

Both teams went down in order in the second.  In the top of the third, Shaler tied the score.  After catcher Taylor Juran led off with a base hit up the middle, 2B Tom Lutz walked.  DH John Orr then sacrificed both runners up a base.  With out out, courtesy runner Eric Temple was able to score on an NA error.  After a pop fly out in the infield, Handza reached on another NA misplay.  With the bases loaded and two outs, NA junior RHP Mike Zelik struck out clean up hitter Andy Gapsky to retire the side.

With Dassner batting and the count at 3-1, the umpires spotted lightning and stopped play.  The game will be resumed at this point this afternoon with the starting time set for 4:00 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there for the conclusion of the game with broadcast time scheduled for 3:55 pm.

LATE SENECA RALLY BEATS TIGERS, 3-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, Seneca Valley rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning as they went on to a 3-1 victory at Raider Field on Monday afternoon.  Senior catcher Dylan Songer had a double, single, and RBI to pace NA.

Neither team was able to score over the first five innings of the game as NA senior right hander Sam O'Neill matched pitches with Seneca ace Cory Mazzoni.  With two outs in the top of the first, Songer lined a shot into right center field for a double but did not score.  Seneca Valley had a chance in the bottom of the second.  With one out, 1B Dan Jergel and catcher Ryan Turner bounced base hits up the middle.  O'Neill was able to retire the side on two ground balls to keep the game scoreless.

Mazzoni retired the Tigers in order in the third and fourth frames.  In the bottom of the fourth, DH Andrew Fornadel hit a double down the right field line and was moved to third on a balk.  O'Neill again stopped the Raiders on a ground ball to junior shortstop Nick Butterini and a strike out.  After Mazzoni again got NA in order in the top of the fifth, the Raiders threatened in the bottom of the inning.  After a ground out to senior third baseman Dave Duffett for the first out, 2B Mike Eonta drew a walk.  O'Neill then erased Eonta with his quick pickoff move, the fifth of the year for the Tiger senior.  CF Kenny Walrond followed with a walk, but O'Neill retired the side on a fly ball to senior Mike O'Neill in right field.  The game was scoreless going into the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, the Tigers finally broke through.  With one out, senior DH Jon Wilson beat out an infield grounder.  Wilson then stole second and went to third when the throw went into center field.  Songer followed with a base hit to center field that scored Wilson with the game's first run.  NA took a 1-0 advantage into the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mazzoni reached on an error to lead off the inning.  With senior James Daniels on base as the courtesy runner, O'Neill got third baseman Tyler Bream to fly out to right field.  Fornadel followed with a long triple to center field that scored Daniels with the tying run.  Jergel then hit a long home run over the fence in right center field to give the Raiders a 3-1 lead after six innings.

Mazzoni struck out the side in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.  The Raider right hander struck out nine of the last twelve Tigers, 14 overall in the game as he recorded his fifth win against just one loss.  O'Neill pitched well for the Tigers allowing just two earned runs.  For his efforts at and behind the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Dylan Songer as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 4-3 in section play, 8-5 overall.  NA will host Shaler in a key section battle tomorrow afternoon at the Senior High field.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

The Tigers and Plum took their non-section game to PNC Park on Saturday afternoon.  In the major league setting, the Mustangs defeated the Tigers, 4-1.  Senior OF Steve Martinkovich and junior OF Jackson Boyd both had triples for the Tigers.

After Plum put two on the board in the top of the first, the Tigers came back with a single tally in the bottom of the second to cut the margin to 2-1.  It remained that way until the Mustangs picked up a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth on their way to the 4-1 victory.

With the loss, the overall NA record fell to 8-4 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to Seneca Valley tomorrow afternoon for a key section contest against the Raiders.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

WPIAL BASEBALL - 2008

The Tigers will compete again in the WPIAL in Class AAAA along with 26 other teams.  The top three teams in each section will enter the WPIAL Tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won-loss record.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section co-champions, will receive a section winner's plaque, and will be entered into the WPIAL tournament.  If three or more teams tie for first place, only those teams will qualify for the playoffs.

In the event of a multiple tie (two or more teams) for a playoff position, head-to-head competition will be the first determinant.  If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used.  If three or more teams are tied for second place and the tie breaking procedure identifies one team as the second place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for third place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the third place team.  If a tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the playoffs.  In the event of multiple ties, the following tie-breaker system will be used:

a.  Section won-lost records of the tied teams will be compiled.
b.  The team (s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will enter post-season play.
c.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

In Class AAAA, three teams will enter the PIAA tournament.  The third place team will be determined on the field between the two non-finalists.

Postponed games must be played in order of postponement and scheduled on the first common open date.  Make up section games must have preference over exhibition games, JV games, and Junior High games EVEN IF A CANCELLATION OF A NON-SECTION GAME IS REQUIRED TO MEET THIS DIRECTIVE.

All games postponed during the first half of the season must be rescheduled and played prior to the beginning of the second half if possible.

During all WPIAL section competition, any game that is interrupted by bad weather prior to becoming a legal game will be declared a suspended game and resumed at that point and concluded on the next available playing date.

The Ten Rule Rule, ending a game after 4 1/2 or 5 innings, as listed in Rule 4, Section 2, Article 2 of the National Federation Rule Book will be in effect for all regular and post season play.  Additionally, the fifteen run rule, ending a game after 3 innings, as listed in the PIAA Rules and Regulations will be in effect as well.

WPIAL Championship play is scheduled to begin the week of May 12, 2008.  The finals will be divided between two dates, Tuesday, May 27 and Wednesday, May 28.  The site will be Falconi Field in Washington, PA.
