TIGERS TAKE CARE OF KISKI AREA, 4-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior RHP Sam O'Neill allowed only one run and five hits while striking out 12 to lead the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over Kiski Area at the Senior High field on Monday afternoon.  Senior 3B Dave Duffett was three for three while junior LF Jackson Boyd had a triple and a single.  Junior first baseman Brad Comport had two hits and two RBIs for the winning Tigers.

Kiski Area started quickly in the top of the first.  After shortstop Eric Weyant drew a walk, CF John Delaney beat out a bunt single.  Weyant went all the way to third, but Delaney was thrown out trying to reach second on a good throw from Duffett to junior 2B Jeff Dassner.  After catcher Tyler Garrone walked and stole second, KA pitcher Willie Nelson grounded to first base scoring Weyant with what would be the Cavaliers' only run of the game.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the first. Senior CF Mike O'Neill opened the inning with a line single to center field and stole second.  After a ground out and a fly out, Duffett singled down the left field line to score O'Neill with the tying run.  Boyd followed with a long triple to deep right field that scored Duffett to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage after one inning of play.

Both pitchers settled down over the next two innings with neither team picking up a base hit.  In the top of the fourth inning, Nelson led off with a single.  O'Neill then picked off courtesy runner Nick Caratelli and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.  In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers threatened but did not score.  Duffett beat out an infield hit to lead off the inning and went to second on a balk.  After a strike out, Comport lifted a single into short center field with Duffett moving to third and Comport to second on the throw.  Nelson got a pop foul and a ground out to end the inning with NA still leading, 2-1.

Kiski rallied in the top of the sixth and threatened to take the lead.  Weyant led off with a single to right field and was sacrificed to second by Delancey.  Garrone beat out a grounder to deep short with Weyant moving to third.  O'Neill then picked off his second runner of the game as the Tigers got Garrone in a rundown without Weyant scoring from third.  O'Neill struck out Nelson on three fast balls to end the inning.

The Tigers put the game away with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Duffett singled to left field.  Boyd followed with a base hit to right center field moving Duffett to third.  Boyd advanced to second on the throw to third base.  With the Kiski infield playing in, Comport bounced a base hit over the pitcher's head and into center field that scored both runners.  The Tigers took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, RF Bill Emerick led off with a base hit to right field.  O'Neill then ended the game in style by striking out the next three batters as the Tigers completed the 4-1 victory.  O'Neill was tough from the second inning on as he struck out eight in the final four innings.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Sam O'Neill as the Player of the Game.

With the win, NA improved their section record to 3-2, the overall mark to 7-3 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to North Hills tomorrow to meet the Indians in a key Section 1-AAAA contest.  The MSA Sports Network will broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.  The game will be re-broadcast on a tape delay at 8:00 pm on KQV - 1410 AM.

In the bottom of the fourth, Wilson led off with a line drive single to left field.  After Wilson stole second, Songer followed with a base hit up the middle to score Wilson and cut the lead to 2-1.  A base hit to left field put runners on first and third and knocked Butler starter Tim Geibel out of the game.  With reliever Zach Cuffman pitching, a wild pitch scored courtesy runner Steve Martinkovich with the tying run.  After junior LF Jackson Boyd hit into a force play, junior RF Ryan McCombs drew a walk.  The Tigers then executed a double steal and Boyd scored the go ahead run when the catcher's throw to third base went into left field.  The Tigers took a 3-2 lead after four innings.

Butler answered in the top of the fifth.  After CF Jeff Slater reached on an error, Reed picked him off first base for the first out.  Right fielder Dustin Uhlman then drove a double into the gap in right center field.  A throwing error allowed Uhlman to score the tying run.  After Ryan Geibel singled to right field, Crummy hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field that gave Butler a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the inning.  Once again, the Tigers came back to retake the lead.  After a leadoff walk to senior CF Mike O'Neill, Wilson lined a single to right field.  O'Neill then stole third and scored on a ground out by Songer.  Wilson was able to score the go ahead run on a Butler error as the Tigers held a 5-4 advantage after five innings.

The top of the sixth proved decisive.  With junior RHP Max Mellott on the mound, Blakely beat out an infield single after one out.  After Slater walked, Mellott struck out Uhlman for the second out of the inning.  Cuffman followed with a base hit into short center field that scored Blakely with the tying run.  Junior RHP Greg Piehler came in to pitch for the Tigers.  After Ryan Geibel reached on an infield hit, Crummy walked with the bases loaded to score Slater and give Butler a 6-5 lead.  Coleman then hit a double down the right field line that scored two runs and make it an 8-5 game.  Crummy scored on a passed ball to give the Tornado a commanding 9-5 lead after five and one half innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers threatened but did not score.  McCombs led off with a base hit to left field and went to second on a wild pitch.  Junior 1B Brad Comport walked to put runners on first and second with no outs.  Butler made another pitching change as they went to senior left hander Matt McCormick who got the next three batters to get out of the jam.

With junior Chris Sinagra pitching, Butler added two more unearned runs in the top of the seventh.  After pinch hitter Evan Oswald reached on an error, Blakely popped up a bunt that was caught by Songer in foul territory.  After Slater hit into a force play for the second out, a single by Uhlman and a walk loaded the bases.  Ryan Geibel followed with his third hit of the game that drove in a pair of runs.  Butler took an 11-5 lead into the bottom of the inning.  McCormick got the Tigers in order in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up the victory.

It was a tough loss for the Tigers who twice fought back to take leads in the game.  For his efforts at and behind the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Dylan Songer as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 2-2 in section play, 6-3 overall.  NA will host Kiski Area in a section contest on Monday afternoon at the Senior High field.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

The visitors from Ohio scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth.  After the first two runners were retired, Shrodek reached on an error.  Stelk then drove a triple to deep right center field to score Shrodek and cut the NA advantage to 10-3 going into the bottom of the inning.  The NA Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth but did not score.

TIGERS UPSET SENECA VALLEY, 4-3,
IN SECTION OPENER

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior right fielder Mike O'Neill drove in junior 2B Jeff Dassner with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Tigers defeated defending PIAA Champion Seneca Valley, 4-3, at the Senior High field on Wednesday afternoon.  Senior shortstop Dave Duffett and senior catcher Dylan Songer had RBI singles to help NA with the victory.  Tiger pitchers Sam O'Neill and Mike Zelik held the Raiders to just two hits as NA won their third straight game.

In the top of the first, Raider shortstop Kenny Walrond opened the game by drawing a walk.  O'Neill then picked Walrond off first for the first out.  Shaine Patsilevas also walked, but Duffett robbed Seneca pitcher Cory Mazzoni with a one-handed grab of his line drive behind second base for the second out.  O'Neill followed by picking off Patsilevas at first base to end the inning.

The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the first.  With one out, junior CF Jon Wilson walked and went to second on a passed ball.  After a strike out, Duffett lined a single to center field to score Wilson with Duffett moving to second on the throw to the plate.  Junior DH Jackson Boyd then dropped a single into short left field moving Duffett to third.  After senior LF Ryan McCombs was hit with a pitch, Duffett scored on a wild pitch with both runners moving up and reaching safely after a run down.  Mazzoni got a strike out to end the inning, but NA had a 2-0 lead after one.

Seneca Valley answered quickly in the top of the second.  After walks to DH Andrew Fornadel and 3B Tyler Break led off the inning, 1B Dan Jergel hit a long double into the left center field gap that scored both runners and tied the game.  O'Neill settled down to strike out the next two batters and retire the side on a fly ball to right field.  The Tigers went down in order in the bottom of the second as the score remained tied at 2-2.

Neither team threatened in the third and fourth innings.  In the top of the fifth, O'Neill walked leadoff hit catcher Ryan Turner but got the next three batters.  In the bottom f the inning, Dassner reached on an error by the Raider shortstop.  Mike O'Neill sacrificed Dassner to second with a well placed bunt.  After a fly ball to center for the second out, Songer lined a base hit between short and third to drive in Dassner with the lead run.  Duffett drew a walk to put runners on at first and second, but Mazzoni was able to get the final out on a fly ball to center field.  The Tigers took a 3-2 lead after five innings.

Once again, the Raiders answered.  In the top of the sixth, Patsilevas and Mazzoni walked to lead off the inning.  After Fornadel grounded into a force play that left runners at first and third, Bream lifted a long foul ball down the left field line.  Duffett made a nice catch while falling to the ground, but Patsilevas was able to tag up and score the tying run.  O'Neill struck out Jergel to retire the side with the game tied at 3-3.

After the Tigers went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, junior right hander Mike Zelik came in to pitch in the top of the seventh.  Zelik allowed a harmless two-out infield single to RF Kyle Sasala and sent the 3-3 tie into the bottom of the seventh.  Dassner led off with a double down the right field line.  Senior left hander Kyle Helisek came in to pitch for the Raiders.  On a 3-1 pitch, Mike O'Neill hit a long drive into the right center field gap that scored Dassner with the winning run.

It was a big win for the Tigers who had not beaten Seneca Valley since 2005.  Although he walked seven batters, O'Neill allowed only one hit over six innings.  Zelik picked up the victory with his one inning of relief.  For his effort in scoring the last two NA runs and hitting the big double in the bottom of the seventh, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Jeff Dassner as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their section record to 1-0, the overall mark to 4-1.  NA will host Howland (OH) this afternoon in a non-section contest at the Senior High field.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 4:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:30 pm.

 REED'S TWO-HITTER

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior RHP Alex Reed allowed only two hits over six innings to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over Ambridge at the Senior High field on Thursday afternoon.  Sophomore CF Justin Brozick had a pair of RBIs while senior third baseman Dave Duffett hit a solo home run to pace NA.  Junior LF Jackson Boyd had a double and scored two of the three Tiger runs.  Junior RHP Chris Sinagra struck out the side in the top of the seventh to record the save.

In the top of the first, Reed walked leadoff batter 2B Eric Poplowski but retired the next three hitters on ground balls.  In the bottom of the second, junior LF Jackson Boyd reached on an error with one out.  With two outs, senior 1B Shawn Davis also was safe on an Ambridge misplay.  With two outs, junior SS Nick Butterini walked with the bases loaded, but Ambridge pitcher Brian Borkowski got a strike out to end the threat.

In the top of the third, Ambridge threatened.  With two outs, Poplowski walked again and DH Mike Collins followed with the first hit of the game, a ground ball up the middle.  With two outs, Reed struck out SS Josh Peters to end the inning.  The Tigers finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth.  After Duffett walked to start the inning, junior Sean Oglesby was sent in as a pinch runner.  Boyd followed with a long drive over the head of the left fielder.  Oglesby tried to score but was thrown out on the relay from Peters to catcher Jimmy Musgrave with Boyd moving to third on the play.  Brozick then lifted a fly ball to short right that was caught by Colby Addis who made a running catch.  Boyd tagged up and beat the throw to the plate to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead after four innings.

After retiring the side in order in the fourth, Reed allowed a lead off double down the left field line by LF David Duke.  Reed than got a fly ball to left for the first out and struck out pinch-hitter Rich Catalina for the second out.  With two outs and a runner on second, Poplowski lined a shot back to the mound that Reed speared for the final out of the inning.  The Tigers threatened again with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.  Senior RF Mike O'Neill drove a long double to the fence in right center field.  Senior CF Jon Wilson then beat out an infield hit with O'Neill moving to third.  Senior catcher Dylan Songer followed with a fly ball that was caught in right field to end the inning.  The Tigers continued to lead 1-0 after five innings.

After Reed got the side in order in the top of the sixth, the Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Duffett started the inning with a long drive to right field that was originally called a double.  After a meeting of the umpires, it was ruled that Duffett's drive had cleared the right field fence for a home run, the first of the year for the Tigers, as the NA lead went to 2-0.  Jackson followed with a ground ball that was booted for an error.  After Boyd stole second, Brozick slapped a single up the middle to score Boyd with his second RBI of the game as the Tigers took a 3-0 lead after six innings.

Junior right hander Chris Sinagra came in to pitch in the top of the seventh.  After striking out Collins to start the inning, Sinagra walked pitcher Luke Burton.  The Tiger junior then struck out Duke and 1B Rob Kingerski to end the game.  The Tigers had captured a 3-0 victory.

TIGERS TOP BALDWIN, 4-1, IN SEASON OPENER

The Tigers finally got a chance to play and made it count as they defeated Baldwin, 4-1, in the season opener at the Senior High field on Tuesday afternoon.  Senior first baseman Shawn Davis led the way with a double as NA scored three times in the bottom of the third and never trailed.

Leading the Tiger attack in addition to Davis were senior shortstop David Duffett with a single and twice on base after being hit by pitches, senior catcher Dylan Songer who was one for two and junior Dan Wentz with a base hit and a walk.  Junior right hander Greg Piehler got the win after pitching four innings and allowing only one hit and no runs while striking out five and walking none.  Junior right hander Max Mellott effectively closed out the game over the last three innings to pick up the save.  First-year Head Coach Andy Maddix commented:  "It was a solid defensive effort" as the Tigers did not commit an error in the game.

With the win, the Tigers move to 1-0 in the early season.  NA will host Mt. Lebanon this afternoon in another non-section contest at the Senior High field.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
