TIGERS CRUISE OVER NORTH HILLS, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

Despite missing two top front one players, the Tigers had little trouble with rival North Hills as they downed the Indians in three straight games at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  NA won the first game, 25-13, took the second, 25-11, and finished off NH with a 25-13 win in game three.  Senior MB Jeff Haus led the Tigers with 10 kills while junior setter Michael Krepp directed the attack while recording 22 assists.

The Tigers wasted no time in taking control of game one.  Haus opened the scoring with a blast down the middle and three North Hills hitting errors gave NA a quick 3-0 lead.  After junior OH Rick Divosevic regained the serve for NA, he proceeded to serve five straight points with senior OH Dennis O'Neil chipping in with a kill as the Tigers took a 9-1 lead.  Aaron Watson and several NA hitting errors brought the Indians back to within six at 10-4.  Senior MB Phil Timcheck went down the middle to push the lead to 11-4, but NH rallied behind Vaughn to cut the margin to 12-7.  A kill off the NA blockers by Ethan Hughey kept the lead at five before Haus dropped in a kill just inside the back line.  NH setter Ryan Vaughn and Haus exchanged points before Haus went down the middle to give the Tigers a 16-9 advantage.  With NA ahead 16-12, the Tigers went on a 9-1 run to close out the game.  A kill by senior OH Matt Miller off the NH blockers, a blast by Timcheck down the middle, and a pair of aces by senior opposite Adam Miller pushed the lead to 21-12.  Matt Miller then went cross court and Timcheck down the middle again to make it 23-12.  With Matt Miller serving, the Indians committed two hitting errors as the Tigers won game one, 25-13, to take a one game to none lead in the match.

Once again, the Tigers jumped ahead in game two, this time scoring the first ten points of the game behind the serving of Krepp.  During the run, Haus, O'Neill and junior OH Alex Verlinich added kills.  After a service error gave NH a point, the Tigers scored the next five on a kill by Haus, a pair of serving aces by Verlinich and NH hitting errors as the score went to 15-1.  Watson earned a point for the Indians with a cross court hit, but NA answered with kills by sophomore MB Justin Haser and junior OH Brian Tevis to make it an 18-3 game.  Tevis and Haser picked up additional points as the Tiger lead was extended to 22-6.  Mike Panza and Ben Rodack recorded kills for the Indians, but Haus put away the Indians with two final kills as NA downed NH, 25-11, in game two to take a two games to none lead in the match.

North Hills played tougher in the third game as they kept it close early.  Junior OH Brian Ledoux opened the scoring with a kill, but Vaughn answered for North Hills.  With the score tied at 2-2, Tevis went down the middle for NA, but Doug Barbor came back with a kill for the Indians to tie the game again.  A kill by Timcheck and two aces by Tevis pushed the margin to 6-3.  After NH hitting errors made it 7-4, a kill by Barbor and a block by Vaughn cut the lead to 7-6.  That was as close as the Indians would get.  NA went on an 8-0 run behind the serving of senior DS Kevin Gleason and the hitting of Haus and sophomore opposite Steven Ferringer.  After Rodack scored on a hit down the middle, several NH hitting errors and a kill by Ledoux pushed the lead to 19-7.  A Verlinich dink, a blast by Haus, and a block by Ledoux pushed the margin to 22-9.  Haser and Tevis both put back overpasses as NA moved to game and match point.  North Hills scored the next four points before Haser went down the middle to finish the game and match.  The Tigers won game three, 25-13, and the match, three games to none.

The Tigers got contributions from a number of players. Timcheck added four kills, Tevis four kills, Haser a pair of blocks.  Ledoux and junior OH Tim Buresh each had a block.  Defensively, junior DS Evan Buysse recorded four digs, senior DS/L Matt Robertson added three digs and three perfect passes, Gleason posted five perfect passes, and Divosevic three perfect passes.  Krepp served four aces.

With the win, the Tigers completed the first half of the section season with a 6-0 record.  NA will host Shaler tomorrow night at the Senior High gym.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.  Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

FOX CHAPEL FALLS TO TIGERS, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

The Tigers used strong play at the net to shut out Fox Chapel, 3-0, in a section match at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  The Tigers downed the Foxes, 25-15, in game one, won game two by the same 25-15 score, and held off the visitors, 25-19, in game three.  Junior MB Kyle Gregan led NA with 11 kills and six blocks while senior OH Matt Miller added 11 kills and senior opposite Adam Miller recorded 9 kills and four blocks.

Fox Chapel took an early 2-1 lead on a cross-court kill by Dan Tublin, but Adam Miller's kill down the middle tied the game.  After a FC hitting error, Gregan went off the FC blockers to put NA ahead for good.  The Tigers pushed the margin to 9-4 behind a pair of kills by Adam Miller and a block by senior OH Dennis O'Neil.  After Tublin brought the Foxes to within three at 10-7, Matt Miller scored on a pair of kills and Gregan went down the middle as the NA lead went to 14-8.  After Eric Redfern dropped a kill just inside the back line, Matt Miller went down the middle, Gregan followed with a kill and a block, and Adam Miller also scored in the middle of the court as the Tigers extended the lead to 19-10.  After Matt Miller added another kill, Mike Lucas answered for the Foxes.  After FC was called for a net violation, junior setter Michael Krepp blocked for a point and a service error made it a 22-12 game.  The Foxes picked up two quick points, one on a kill by Redfern, before senior MB Freddie Haas drove a hard smash off the front row blockers.  With NA up 24-15 and Haas serving, the Foxes were called for a lift that ended game one.  The Tigers won the first game, 25-15, to take a one game to none lead in the match.

The Tigers started quickly in game two and never looked back.  Adam Miller blocked an attempt by Tublin to put NA on top 1-0.  Miller and Gregan combined for another block before an NA service error cut the lead in half.  After a FC hitting error, the combo of Adam Miller and Gregan blocked another Tublin kill attempt to put the Tigers up 4-1.  With NA ahead 6-4 after a series of hitting and service errors, O'Neil put away a kill and Krepp was able to convert after a diving save by junior DS Evan Buysse to give the Tigers a 9-4 advantage.  A kill by Haas along with yet another block by the Adam Miller/Gregan duo pushed the margin to 11-5.  Tublin cut the margin to 12-7, but Gregan answered off a quick set to make it a 13-7 game.  After another Tublin answer, Gregan went down the middle and junior OH Rick Divosevic and Haas teamed up for a block to push the lead to 16-9.  A kill by Divosevic off the FC blockers, a dump by Matt Miller in the middle and a FC hitting error extended the margin to 19-10.  Matt Miller followed with a blast down the middle, Freddy Haas added an ace and the Foxes committed a pair of hitting errors to make it 22-12.  After Adam Miller's kill put NA at game point, FC's Mike Rios kept the Foxes alive with a kill down the middle.  A service error by Tublin ended game two with the Tigers picking up a 25-15 victory and earning a two games to none lead in the match.

Fox Chapel came out strong in game three looking to extend the match.  A Rios block, a Tublin kill and an NA hitting error put FC ahead, 3-1, before Gregan answered off the FC blockers.  With senior DS Kevin Gleason serving, Gregan put back an overpass, the Foxes were called for a net violation, and Adam Miller went cross court to give the Tigers a 6-3 advantage.  Fox Chapel came back on several NA hitting errors and a cross court kill by Jake Steinhaus to close to within one at 8-7.  Krepp answered with a left-handed smash down the middle, and O'Neil served an ace to push the margin back to three at 10-7.  After several hitting errors, Matt Miller dropped in a left handed tip, Tublin answered down the middle, but Gregan followed off another quick set to make it a 13-9 game.  After Matt Miller went down the middle again, Rios answered, but Adam Miller came back with a blast down the line to push the NA lead to 17-11.  Once again, the Foxes rallied behind the hitting of Tublin to cut the margin to three at 18-15.  It was as close as Fox Chapel would get.  Adam Miller scored on a tip, and then stepped back to serve two straight points including an ace to push the lead to 21-15.  After Haas went cross court, Tublin just scored inside the back line and the Foxes picked up another point on an NA serving error to make it a 22-17 game.  Two straight FC miscues put the Tigers at game point.  It looked like Krepp had the game and match winner, but he was called for a net violation.  Matt Miller was then able to put away the Foxes after a diving dig by Krepp.  The Tigers won game three, 25-19, and the match, three games to none.

It was another good overall performance by the Tigers who got contributions from a number of players.  Krepp was on target all night as he posted 34 assists.  The NA passing game was led by senior DS Matt Robertson with 8 perfect passes while Matt Miller recorded 7 and Buysee six.  Defensively, Krepp led with six digs, with Robertson adding five and Matt Miller four for the winning Tigers.  For his efforts at the net, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Kyle Gregan as the Player of the Match.

With the win, the Tigers improved their section record to 4-0 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to Seneca Valley tomorrow night for a key section match with the Raiders.  The starting time is set for 7:00 pm.
