STEENBEKE LEADS LADY TIGERS
OVER NORTH HILLS, 4-2

by Rick Meister

The North Allegheny Varsity Softball Team traveled to North Hills on Thursday and came back with a well-earned 4-2 victory behind the clutch pitching and home-run bat of junior pitcher Amber Steenbeke.  The Tigers struck quickly in the top of the first when freshman right fielder Jordan Macey opened the game with a single up the middle. When junior second baseman Christy Cotter’s bunt attempt was mishandled by North Hills, the Tigers had runners at first and second with no one out. Senior shortstop Mary DeMino then singled to load the bases.  Senior third baseman Stephanie Cassidy picked up an RBI when she hit into a fielder’s choice from short to third while Macey raced home with the first run of the game.  Following a foul pop to third, senior catcher Jocelyn Dimpel singled to right center to drive in DeMino.

The Indians struck back in the first by scoring two runs off of Tiger starter Deanna Tritinger when right fielder Jess Rectenwald singled, pitcher Rachel VanAtta and right fielder Julie Havrilla walked, and designated player Halea Hayden hit a two-out double down the left field line which tipped off of the glove of Cassidy to tie the score at two.  Tritinger left he game after the first inning due to muscle soreness in her arm, paving the way for Steenbeke’s outstanding relief performance.

The Tigers added single runs in the third and sixth innings to reach the final score of 4-2.  In the third, DeMino singled with one out, stole second base, and was driven in on a two-out RBI single by senior center fielder Kelsey Fedell.  In the sixth, Steenbeke took North Hills deep with a one-out solo home run over the center field fence.

Steenbeke scattered three hits in her six innings on the mound, while striking out six and walking none.  The Indians’ greatest threat occurred in the seventh when they had the tying runs in scoring position at second and third with one out, but a pop behind the mound fielded deftly by Steenbeke and a fly ball to Fedell ended the contest.

With the win, the Tigers move to 3-1 in section play and 7-2 overall.  NA will complete the first half of section play this afternoon when they travel to Pine-Richland to lock horns with the Rams in a 4:00 start at Pine-Richland High School.

DE MINO LEADS LADY TIGERS OVER BUTLER, 6-5

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior shortstop Mary DeMino was four for four including two doubles and a triple good for a pair of RBIs to lead the Lady Tigers to a 6-5 victory over Butler at the Senior High field on Tuesday afternoon.  Senior 3B Steph Cassidy drove in DeMino with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a line drive double to left field.

Butler loaded the bases in the top of the first but could not score.  With one out, pitcher Angie Reddick singled to right field and catcher Erica Thrower and shortstop Jenna Geibel reached on walks.  Junior right hander Amber Steenbeke got out of trouble by getting two ground balls to end the threat.  In the bottom of the inning, the Lady Tigers threatened.  With one out, junior 2B Christy Cotter beat out a bunt single.  DeMino followed with a base hit to right center.  Reddick then closed the door with two pop fly outs to keep the game scoreless.

The Tornado broke through in the top of the second to take the lead.  With two outs, CF Nikki Hladik drew a walk.  Right fielder Jocelyn Bachman followed with a line drive double to left field to score Hladik.  Reddick then singled to right with Hladik stopping at third.  Thrower drove in another run with an infield single.  After a walk to Geibel loaded the bases, NA catcher Jocelyn Dimpel picked Reddick off third base to end the inning.  Butler took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the second.

The Lady Tigers came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game.  With one out, Cotter singled to right field and then stole second.  DeMino followed with a line drive down the right field line that went off the glove of Bachman who made a great try to catch the ball.  DeMino ended up at third with an RBI triple.  Cassidy drove in the tying run with a ground out to short.  After three innings, the game was tied at 2-2.

Steenbeke settled down after the wild second inning allowing only a pair of doubles to 1B Amanda Skidmore and 3B Sadie Marak in the third and fifth innings.  In the bottom of the fifth, NA took the lead for the first time.  After freshman RF Jordan Macey led off with a bunt single, Cotter sacrificed her to second.  DeMino followed with a line double to the fence in center that scored Macey with the lead run.  Cassidy followed with a single to short left field with DeMino taking third.  After Cassidy stole second, senior CF Kelsey Fedell drove in a run with a ground out.  NA took a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning.

After Steenbeke got the side in order in the top of the sixth, the Lady Tigers added another run in the bottom of the inning.  Senior Beth Chidester pinch hit for junior LF Maria Shevchik and led off with a bunt single.  After Dimpel grounded out to move Chidester to third, Steenbeke batted and singled to left to drive in the fifth NA run.  The Lady Tigers took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning.  Butler rallied, however, to tie the game.  A base hit by Reddick and walks to Thrower and Geibel loaded the bases with no outs.   After a Marak ground out to short scored one run, Skidmore singled to drive in another run.  When the ball got through in left field, Geibel scored the tying run on the error.  After pinch hitter Dana Sikorsky struck out, 2B Olivia Vasey drew a walk to put runners on first and third.  Once again, Dimpel picked off a runner at third to end the inning with the game tied at 5-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, DeMino hit the first pitch on a line into left center field for a double.  Cassidy followed with a drive to left center field that left fielder Olivia Hortert tried to catch.  The ball bounced off Hortert and rolled to the fence as DeMino ran home with the winning run.

It was a gritty effort by the Lady Tigers to pull out an important section victory.  Dimpel added a triple and single, and Cotter and Cassidy a pair of hits each as NA pounded out 13 hits.  Steenbeke was able to get outs when necessary as she picked up the victory.  For her efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Mary DeMino as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved to 2-1 in section, 6-2 overall.  NA will travel to Pine-Richland this afternoon for a 4:00 section contest.  The game is a makeup game for the rain out of last Thursday.

SHALER HOLDS OFF LADY TIGERS, 3-2

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Shaler scored a pair of runs in the first inning and added an unearned tally in the sixth on their way to a 3-2 victory over the Lady Tigers at the Senior High field on Wednesday afternoon.  Senior CF Kelsey Fedell led NA with a home run, double and single, but it was not enough as the Lady Titans held on for the win.  Junior Maria Shevchik had a pinch-hit double for NA.

The Lady Titans came out strong in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.  With one out, Samantha Montoya singled to left field.  Shortstop Chelsea Siar followed with a long drive off the right center field fence with Montoya coming all the way around to score.  The throw to the plate was wide allowing Siar to go to third.  Pitcher Abby Nichter then drilled a double down the left field line to score Siar and give Shaler a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, freshman Jordan Macey reached on an error.  Senior DP Julie Heinl followed with a bunt single.  Both runners advanced a base when the throw to second went into center field.  Senior shortstop Mary DeMino then came through with a sacrifice fly to deep right field that scored Macey.  Shaler held a 2-1 lead after one inning of play.

In  the bottom of the second, Fedell led off with a base hit.  Senior catcher Jocelyn Dimpel laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Fedell to second with one out.  Nichter was able to get the next two batters, however, to end the threat.  Shaler had a chance in the top of the third when Montoya led off with a double into the left center field gap.  After Montoya moved to third on a ground out, NA junior pitcher Deanna Tritinger was able to keep her there.  Nichter hit a hard ground ball that Tritinger knocked down but kept the runner on third from scoring.  The next two batters went out on a ground out and a line drive to junior 3B Kelsey Birsic.  Shaler continued to hold a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Fedell drilled a double to right center field with two outs, but the Lady Tigers were unable to score.    The Lady Titans added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.  With two outs and no one on base, 1B Jamie Roth hit a ground ball to short that took a bad hop allowing Roth to reach base.  A successful bunt by Jessie Vannucci put two runners on base with Roth moving to third.  A wild pitch scored Roth to give Shaler a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.   In the bottom of the inning, senior 2B Steph Cassidy hit a two-out single but was stranded.

In the bottom of the seventh, Fedell led off with a long drive that hit the top of the left field fence and bounced over for a home run that cut the Shaler lead to 3-2.  After two fly ball outs, Shevchik pinch hit a double to deep left field.  Nichter was able to get the last out on a pop fly to short to end the game.

It was a tough loss for the Lady Tigers who battled to the end before falling by the single run.  After a shaky start, Tritinger settled down and did not allow an earned run over the last six innings.  Because of her efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Kelsey Fedell as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the NA section record dropped to 1-1, the overall mark to 5-2 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will resume section play on Tuesday when they host Butler in another key early season matchup.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

TRITINGER TOSSES NO-HITTER TO BEAT
SENECA VALLEY, 3-0

by Rick Meister

Junior righthander Deanna Tritinger did not allow a hit while striking out four and walking one to lead the Lady Tigers to a 3-0 victory at Seneca Valley in the section opener on Saturday morning.  The only Raider base runner of the day was a leadoff walk in the third inning earned by Seneca Valley second baseman Alyssa Miller, as the Tigers played flawlessly in the field in support of Tritinger.

The Raiders’ pitcher Ashlie Kuhn matched Tritinger in putting zeros on the board through six innings, although the Tigers garnered four hits along the way. A two-out, first-inning single by senior shortstop Mary DeMino gave the NA an early base runner, but Kuhn was able to retire the side without a score.

In the third, back-to-back one out singles by senior catcher Jocelyn Dimpel and freshman right fielder Jordan Macey gave the Tigers runners at first and second with one out. Junior second baseman Christy Cotter hit a line shot which seemed to be bound for the right field corner, but it was speared by Raider first baseman Megan Buletko, who stepped on first to double off Macey and end the inning.

A one out single in the fourth by senior third baseman Stephanie Cassidy gave the Tigers another runner, but Kuhn was able to stab senior first baseman Sarah Moore’s liner and throw to first to double off Cassidy, who was running on the play.

NA finally broke through in a three-run top of the seventh.  DeMino led off with a single up the middle.  Following a deep fly-out to center field by Cassidy, Moore also singled up the middle to advance DeMino to second.  Moore was then run for by sophomore pinch runner Haley Wisniewski.  The key hit of the inning was a single by senior center fielder Kelsey Fedell that drove in DeMino and sent Wisniewski to third, with Fedell taking second on the play. Following a strikeout, junior left fielder Kelsey Birsic singled sharply through the middle to drive in Wisniewski with run number two.  Dimpel then lined a single over second to drive in Fedell with the third and final Tiger run.

With the win, NA improved to 1-0 in section play, 5-1 overall.  The Lady Tigers will host Shaler on Tuesday afternoon as section play continues.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS KNOCK OFF #1 HEMPFIELD,
1-0, IN TEN INNINGS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

A wild pitch sent senior Beth Chidester home with the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Lady Tigers defeated top-ranked Hempfield, 1-0, at the Senior High field on Thursday afternoon.  Freshman RF Jordan Macey had a pair of hits, and junior righthander Deanna Tritinger pitched nine scoreless innings  for the winning Lady Tigers.

After Tritinger got the side in order in the top of the first, the Lady Tigers threatened in the bottom of the inning.  Macey led off with a single to center field.  With one out, senior shortstop Mary DeMino reached on a force play and then stole second with a clever head first slide to avoid the tag.  Lady Spartan pitcher T'Nia Falbo then got a strikeout to end the inning.  In the second inning, DP Alyssa Grossman reached on a two-out infield single but did not score.  In the bottom of the inning, junior 1B Amber Steenbeke singled to center with one out but did not score.

Neither team was able to come close to scoring until the bottom of the sixth as Falbo and Tritinger controlled the game.  In the sixth, senior DP Julie Heinl singled to short left field to lead off.  Macey followed with a sacrifice bunt to put Heinl in scoring position, but Falbo got the next two outs to end the threat.  In the top of the seventh, junior 2B Christy Cotter made a sparkling catch of a wind blown pop fly in short right to start the inning.  Grossman then singled down the right field line, but Tritinger retired the next two batters to keep the game scoreless.

In the top of the eighth, 1B Melissa Lipinacci drilled a double to right center field with one out.  Once again, Tritinger kept the Spartans off the board with two ground outs to end the inning.  In the bottom of the inning, Macey singled to right field with two outs, and Cotter followed with a base hit to center.  With two outs, Grossman, who came in to pitch in the fifth, got a ground ball to end the NA threat.

In the top of the ninth, Falbo singled to lead off and was replaced by pinch runner Paige Lucas.  Pinch hitter Alyssa Banks sacrificed Lucas to second.  With two outs, RF Katy Balko singled to right field, but a perfect throw from Macey to senior catcher Jocelyn Dimpel nailed Lucas at the plate.  The Lady Tigers went out, 1-2-3, in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the tenth inning, the tie-breaker was employed allowing each team to start the inning with a runner on second base.  The runner is the last batter from the previous inning.  For Hempfield, Balko started at second base, and Steenbeke went to the mound for NA.  The junior righthander got the next three batters to strand the base runner and keep the game scoreless.  In the bottom of the inning, Steenbeke was required to be the runner as she made the last out of the previous inning.  Chidester struck out but reached first when the ball hit the ground and Hempfield catcher Comilla did not throw to first.  Dimpel followed with a bunt that she beat out after pitcher Grossman first looked to third and then threw to first too late.  With the bases loaded and no outs, Falbo was sent back in to pitch.  Heinl grounded to third and the throw to the plate retired Steenbeke for the first out.  With Macey batting and the count at 2 and 2, Falbo threw a pitch over the head of Comilla and Chidester came home with the winning run.

It was a terrific game for the home opener.  Two top teams went at for ten innings with the outcome decided on a wild pitch.  NA got good efforts from a number of players, but the North Allegheny Sports Network named Jordan Macey as the Player of the Game.  Macey had two hits, a sacrifice bunt, and a great throw to the plate to get the potential lead run late in the game.

With the win, NA improved their non-section record to 4-1 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Seneca Valley on Saturday for the section opener.  Game time is scheduled for 12:00 noon.

NA left no doubt early as they posted eleven runs in the top of the first inning to take control of the contest.  After the Lady Tigers scored two more runs in the top of the third, Winsor scored their only run on a Tiger error in the bottom of the inning.  In the top of the fourth, NA added nine more runs to complete the scoring.  The game was ended after the bottom of the inning because of the 15-run rule.

PARKLAND EDGES LADY TIGERS,
3-2, IN FLORIDA PLAY

Two Pennsylvania teams traveled to Florida to meet in non-section play with Parkland from Allentown topping the Lady Tigers, 3-2.  Senior Jane Miner blasted a two-run homer over the right field fence but it was not enough as the Lady Trojans held off  NA to win.

Parkland scored three times in the second inning against righthander Amber Steenbeke but the NA junior held off the Trojans for the remainder of the contest.  After senior DH Julie Heinl reached on an error, Miner's home run in the third cut the margin to 3-2 but NA would get only three hits off Parkland pitcher Deanna Stinner.

With the loss, the NA non-section record dropped to 2-1 in the early season.  The Lady Tigers will complete play at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex this morning when they meet The Winsor School from Massachusetts.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 am.

LADY TIGERS DECK BRIDGERS, 12-0,
IN SEASON OPENER

by Rick Meister

The North Allegheny Varsity Softball Team got off to a solid start on the road on Monday afternoon at Ambridge with a 12-0 victory over the Bridgers.  Senior catcher Jocelyn Dimpel had a double and single good for four RBIs and senior CF Kelsey Fedell added a three-run double to pace NA.  Junior righthander Deanna Tritinger allowed only one hit and struck out six to earn the victory for the Lady Tigers.

North Allegheny wasted no time in setting up the orange barrels on the Bridgers, striking for five first-inning runs to take command of the game. Senior right fielder Jane Miner led off with a solid single up the middle.  Junior second baseman Christy Cotter followed with a perfectly placed bunt that went for a single and moved Miner to second.  Fedell then drew a walk to load the bases.  Following a strikeout, four consecutive walks to senior left fielder Beth Chidester, senior third baseman Stephanie Cassidy, senior shortstop Mary DeMino, and senior Dimpel gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead with Miner, Cotter, Fedell, and Chidester scoring.  Senior designated player Julie Heinl drove in the final run of the inning with a single over second base that scored Cassidy.

NA added a run in the third when DeMino singled and scored on an RBI double by Dimpel to raise the score to 6-0.   The Tigers put it away in the top of the seventh in a six-run inning that sent 11 Tigers to the plate.  Senior first baseman Sarah Moore hit a one-out single to right field.  Sophomore Stephanie Bartlam ran for Moore.  Following a Tiger strikeout, junior Maria Shevchik, pinch hitting for Cassidy, reached on an error. An RBI single by DeMino scored Bartlam.  Dimpel then lined a single to right field to score both Shevchik and DeMino , with Dimpel taking second on the play at the plate.  Freshman Jordan Macey courtesy-ran for Dimpel.  Heinl’s single drove in Macey with run number nine.  Miner drew a walk, and Cotter singled. Fedell then lined a double to right-center field to clear the bases and complete the scoring.

Tritinger limited the Bridgers to a single hit, a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth.  Tritinger struck out six, walked one, and hit one batter to pick up the win.

The Tigers will compete at Disney’s Wide World of Sports on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  On Thursday, NA will meet Central (OR) at 4:00 pm.  On Friday, Pennsylvania rival Parkland will be the opponent for a 1:00 pm contest with The Winsor School from Massachusetts meeting NA on Saturday morning at 8:00 am.
