PIAA Boys' Lacrosse Championship Bracket

TIGERS TRIPPED UP IN SEMIFINALS BY
TOP-RANKED EXPLORERS

(6/5/13) The top-ranked LaSalle Explorers were too much to handle on Tuesday night as the District 12 champions upended the North Allegheny Boys Lacrosse Team, 14-1. The loss doesn’t spoil a great season for the Tigers who went deeper into the state playoffs than any boys’ lacrosse squad in school history. LaSalle will face Conestoga, who defeated Avon Grove 12-1, in the PIAA Championship game on Saturday afternoon.

LaSalle, who boasts over a dozen Division I recruits, jumped on the Tigers immediately in the semifinals with three goals within the first three minutes of the game and took a 9-0 lead before Grant Page scored NA’s only goal of the night. Page’s goal was set up on a fine pass from Kyle Rullan to bring the score to 9-1 at halftime.  LaSalle scored five times in the second half to cruise to the win.

Despite the score, the Tigers fought hard defensively. Goalie John Brandon stopped 16 shots and defensemen Joe Huber, Coby Cunningham, Jake Prutting, and Jeremy Wdowiak worked tirelessly to prevent further damage. Senior middies Scott Davis, Ryan Mauro, Joe Griffin and long pole Tyler Ware did their best to grind down the Explorers. Senior attackmen Grant Page and Dan Briskey also put forth outstanding efforts. Senior Jess Keeley won 10 of 15 face-offs.

The Tigers complete their season with a 13-8 record following the loss. Congratulations to the NA Boys Lacrosse Team for a spectacular season.

WPIAL BOYS' LACROSSE - 2013

The Tigers will compete again this year in the WPIAL along with 32 other teams. The top four (4) teams in each section will enter the WPIAL tournament. Teams that qualify for the WPIAL Tournament may not play games after SUNDAY MAY 12, 2013 but may scrimmage any team still alive in the WPIAL Tournament. There is no limit to the number of post-season scrimmages provided that the opponent is still alive in the tournament. All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/lost record. Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive section winner’s plaques, and will be entered into the WPIAL Tournament. The top 2 teams from each section will play at home in the first round of the playoffs.

In the event of a multiple team (two or more teams) tie for a playoff position head-to-head competition will be the first determinant.  If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used.  If three or more teams are tied for third place and the tie-breaking system identifies one team as the third place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for fourth place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the fourth place team.  If a tie cannot be broken all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

TIE-BREAKING SYSTEM

1.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2.  The team(s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

Teams that qualify for the tournament should be aware that they may be placed in a preliminary round and may be assigned to play beginning on Monday, May 16, 2011.  Section winners and second place finishers will be awarded home games in the first round with the third and fourth place teams playing away.  In the event of a tie for first and/or second place, the WPIAL will determine the home site assignment based on availability and suitability.  The WPIAL semi-finals and finals will be contested at a neutral site.

Teams should be aware that PIAA tournament entry is reserved for Division I Teams.  The WPIAL however will crown a Division I and Division II Champion.  Runner Up and third place team determined by a consolation final game will enter the 2012-2013 PIAA Boys' Lacrosse Championship.
