LADY TIGERS KNOCK OFF THIRD-RANKED
PINE-RICHLAND, 9-7

by Lee Mohn

(5/7/13) The Lady Tigers Lacrosse Team saved one of their best performances of the season for Thursday night defeating the third-ranked Pine Richland Rams, 9-7.  North Allegheny fell to Pine Richland earlier in the year 19-7 but this night would be much different.  Things started off slow as the Rams would dominate the first six minutes of action, picking up two goals by Tess Drotar with the first goal coming just 58 seconds into the game. The Tigers made it 2-1 when Rena Ferrara would strike back just 40 seconds later.  Christine Palmeri scored the next two goals, on the second of which making a beautiful steal in the Rams end to beat the Pine-Richland goalie.  Isabella Cottone made it 4-2, Tigers, with nine minutes left in the half but the Rams tied it 4-4 to regain the momentum.

Palmeri gave the Tigers the lead back just 1:20 into the second half on a wicked shot from 15 yards out. Two more goals by Cottone and one more by Palmeri lifted the Tigers to two goal lead with 4:37 to go.  The Tigers extended their defense and played brilliantly making it tough for the Rams to run their offense.  Drotar cut the score to 8-7 with 2:40 remaining, but the Tigers won the next draw and ran their delay game to perfection before Cottone iced the game with a goal at the 24:32 mark. Cottone ended the night with four goals, along with Palmeri.  Senior Christine Palmeri was named the Wright Automotive player of the game for her all-around performance.

The Tigers improve to 7-7-1 and will end their season Friday night against Hampton.  Pine Richland falls to 14-2 and will enter the WPIAL playoffs next week.

WPIAL GIRLS' LACROSSE - 2013

The Lady Tigers will be playing again in the WPIAL along with 30 other teams.  A WPIAL section plaque will be awarded to each of the section winners.  Those winners will be the teams who have the best record against all schools in their section.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and each will be declared co-champions and will receive a section winner's plaque.  All ties in section record will be broken by head-to-head competition.

The top four teams in each section will enter the WPIAL tournament.  Teams that qualify for the WPIAL tournament may not play games after May 12, 2013 but may scrimmage any team that has qualified for, and remains alive in the WPIAL Tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/lost record.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will received section winner's plaques, and will be entered into the WPIAL Tournament.  The top two teams from each section will play at home in the first round of the playoffs.

In the event of a multiple team (two or more teams) tie for a playoff position head-to-head competition will be the first determinant.  If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used.  If three or more teams are tied for third place and the tie breaking system identifies one team as the third place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for fourth place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the fourth place team. If a tie cannot be broken all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

TIE-BREAKING SYSTEM

1.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2.  The team(s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

Teams that qualify for the tournament should be aware that they may be placed in a preliminary round and may be assigned to play beginning on Tuesday, May 14, 2013.  Section winners and second place finishers will be awarded home games in the first round with the third and fourth place teams playing away.  In the event of a tie for first and or second place, the WPIAL will determine the home site assignment based on availability and suitability.

Teams should be aware that PIAA tournament entry is reserved for Division I Teams.  The WPIAL will however crown a Division I and Division II Champion.  The Division I WPIAL Champion and Runner Up will qualify for the 2012-13 PIAA Girls Lacrosse Championship.
