GONZALES NAMED TO ALL-SECTION TEAM

(3/29/13) North Allegheny freshman Abby Gonzales has been named to the WPIAL Class AAAA Section 3 All-Section team. As a first-year starter, Gonzales led the Tigers in scoring and steals, averaging 11 points per game and posting 56 thefts for the season. Gonzales was also third on the team in rebounding, averaging 5 rebounds per game. The freshman was instrumental in the Lady Tigers’ 20-4 season, section championship, and trek to the WPIAL quarterfinals.

WPIAL Girls' Class AAAA Bracket

NA RALLY FALLS JUST SHORT AGAINST GATEWAY, 50-43

(2/22/13) Despite a furious second half rally by the Lady Tigers, seventh-seeded Gateway upended second-seeded North Allegheny on Friday night, 50-43, in the Class AAAA Quarterfinals. The Lady Tigers trailed Gateway 37-25 late in the third quarter before NA staged a comeback bid. North Allegheny rode the wave of a 14-4 run to trim the Gateway advantage to 41-39 with three minutes to play. However, Gateway connected on 12 of 17 free throws in the second half to hold off the Tigers for the victory.

Thanks in large part to senior Maria Taylor, Gateway jumped on the Tigers in the first quarter for a 14-1 lead. Taylor controlled the glass early in the game with 12 first half points and nine rebounds. The senior forward helped Gateway to a 26-14 advantage by halftime and finished the night with 16 points and 12 boards.

The Gators maintained their double-digit lead until the fourth quarter when the Tigers defense began to clamp down on Gateway. Senior Maddie Nellis and freshman Abby Gonzales combined for seven steals and turned Gateway mistakes into NA points. The steady hand of Nellis provided nine points, including three treys, and Gonzales scored a team-high 11 points. For providing senior leadership when the team needed it most, Nellis was chosen as the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Also key to NA’s comeback effort was how the Tigers neutralized Taylor in the second half. After dominating the offensive boards early, Taylor scored only four more points in the final 16 minutes as sophomore Meg Morningstar and freshman Taylor Lake combined for 15 rebounds and 13 second half points. While the North Allegheny rally pulled the Tigers to within two points with three minutes remaining, it wouldn’t be enough however as Gateway managed enough accurate free-throw shooting down the stretch to fend off the feisty Tigers.

Gateway improves to 20-4 for the year and advances to face Bethel Park in the WPIAL Semifinals. North Allegheny, the Section 3 champions, concludes the season with a 20-4 mark and has recorded 17 wins or more in four consecutive seasons.  With only one senior graduating this spring, the Lady Tigers bring back a wealth of experience to floor next season and hope to once again be one of the top teams in Class AAAA next season.

WPIAL GIRLS' BASKETBALL - 2012-13

The Lady Tigers will compete again in the WPIAL in Class AAAA along with 28 other teams.  The top four  teams in each section will enter the WPIAL Basketball Tournament scheduled to begin on February 15, 2013. All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won – loss record. Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive a section winner’s plaque, and will be entered into the WPIAL tournament. If four or more teams tie for first place, only those teams will qualify for post-season play.

In the event of a multiple tie (two or more teams) for a playoff position, head-to-head competition will be the first determinant. If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used. If three or more teams are tied for third place and the tie breaking system identifies one team as the third place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for fourth place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the fourth place team. If a tie cannot be broken, all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

TIE-BREAKER SYSTEM

  1. Section won-loss records of the tied teams will be compiled.

  2. The team(s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will enter post-season play.

  3. If the tie cannot be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.
