NA FALLS TO UNDEFEATED NEW CASTLE IN PIAA SECOND ROUND (3/13/13) North Allegheny held New Castle in check in the first half, but the undefeated Red Hurricanes stormed back in the second half for a 57-46 win in the Second Round of the PIAA Playoffs. In a see-saw first half, the Tigers held the edge over New Castle thanks to a suffocating defense and solid shooting from the outside. Limiting room in the lane, NA allowed the Red Hurricanes just 26% from the field while the Tigers hit 5 of 11 shots from beyond the arc for a 23-19 lead at intermission. Among the Tigers sharpshooters was Luke Soyster who knocked down 3 of 4 from three-point land and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game. In the second half, the New Castle defense picked up the intensity and a run of points soon followed. The Canes opened the third quarter with an 8-1 run for a 27-24 lead. After the Tigers tied the score on a Soyster three-pointer, New Castle grabbed command of the game with a 15-3 run for a 43-30 advantage by early in the fourth quarter. The flurry of points was spearheaded by Naval Academy recruit Shawn Anderson who scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the second half. Gannon University recruit Brandon Domenick poured in 14 points and three treys. New Castle knocked down 76% from the field, 13 of 17, in the second half. For the Tigers, senior point guard R.J. Colabrese scored a team-high 15 points. Junior forward Elijah Zeise pulled down a team-high five rebounds while Colabrese, James Meeker and Adam Haus forced two steals apiece. North Allegheny’s season ends with a 22-5 record, marking the third time in the last four years the Tigers have won 20 or more games. With the win, New Castle sets a new school record for consecutive wins with their 28th win in-a-row and improves to 28-0 on the year. The Red Hurricanes will face Hampton for the fourth time this season in the PIAA Quarterfinals. GAME SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * WPIAL BOYS' BASKETBALL - 2012-13 The Tigers will compete again in the WPIAL in Class AAAA along with 30 other teams. The top four teams in each section will enter the WPIAL Basketball Tournament scheduled to begin on February 15, 2013. All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won – loss record. Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive a section winner’s plaque, and will be entered into the WPIAL tournament. If four or more teams tie for first place, only those teams will qualify for post-season play. In the event of a multiple tie (two or more teams) for a playoff position, head-to-head competition will be the first determinant. If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used. If three or more teams are tied for third place and the tie breaking system identifies one team as the third place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for fourth place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the fourth place team. If a tie cannot be broken, all tied teams will enter the playoffs. TIE-BREAKER SYSTEM
