TIGERS ROAR BACK FROM 15-DOWN TO TOP LITTLE LIONS

(3/9/13) North Allegheny rallied from a 15 point deficit for an 84-76 victory over the State College Little Lions in the opening round of the PIAA Playoffs. State College opened the first quarter with a 20-5 advantage thanks in large part to senior Bryan Sekunda’s four treys and 19 first half points. The senior finished the night with 27 points, but played much of the game in foul trouble, fouling out of the contest with over three minutes remaining.

Finding themselves trailing by 15, the Tigers began to chip into the State College lead behind the efforts of senior Sean Hennigan. While many of the Tigers were slow to settle into the game, Hennigan kept NA within striking distance with timely buckets in the lane and 15 first half points. Including two three-pointers, Hennigan ended the game with 22 points and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

By halftime, North Allegheny trimmed the deficit to 43-41 and stormed out of the gates to begin the second half with three steals and three ensuing buckets. R.J. Colabrese and David Haus score on lay-ins, and Hennigan dropped in a triple to give the Tigers a prompt 48-43 lead. NA continued on an 11-2 run and upped their lead to 60-49 late in the third quarter. North Allegheny’s second half success was built on 61% shooting from the field and 14 turnovers by State College over the final 16 minutes.

With the Tigers holding a 71-60 advantage in the fourth quarter, the Little Lions went on an 8-3 run with the help of Kyle Kanaskie’s work at the free-throw line to shorten NA’s lead to six points. Kanaskie was a perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe and finished with 19 points for the game.

Despite State College’s best efforts, the Tigers lead was too much as North Allegheny hung on for an 84-76 win. Along with Hennigan’s big night, senior Adam Haus added 15 points junior David Haus chipped in with 10. The Tigers had a rare off night from beyond the arc, hitting just 5 of 24 from three-point land. NA made up the difference with a dribble drive offense that led to numerous point blank lay-ups. The Little Lions shot 61% from the field in the first half but was held to just 33% in the second half.

North Allegheny improves to 22-4 on the season while State College concludes their campaign with a 17-8 mark. Up next, the Tigers will face the WPIAL champions, and undefeated, New Castle Red Hurricanes for the third time this season in the Second Round of the PIAA Playoffs. As of the writing of this article, the site and time of the game is to be determined.

HAMPTON TRIPS UP TIGERS IN WPIAL SEMIFINALS, 66-62

(2/27/13) North Allegheny rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit, but in the end the Hampton Talbots outlasted the Tigers, 66-62, in the WPIAL Class AAAA Semifinals. Hampton reaches the WPIAL Finals for the fourth time in five years. The Talbots will face New Castle in the title game in a rematch of last year’s Class AAA final. Both Hampton and New Castle bumped up to Quad-A this season.

The opening half of the game held a furious pace as both teams traded leads throughout. By halftime, the Tigers grabbed a 31-27 advantage behind the hot shooting of seniors James Meeker and Joe Mancini. Meeker dropped in 11 in the first half, on his way to a 19 point night. Mancini knocked down two treys, part of an opening half that saw the Tigers pour in seven shots from beyond the arc.

In the third quarter, NA’s three-point well ran dry as the Talbots built a 48-41 lead by the end of the period. Juniors Jon Floss and Jack Obringer combined for 10 points to spur on the Talbots. Fellow junior Ryan Luther spearheaded Hampton’s efforts and finished the night with a game-high 27 points.

By early in the fourth quarter, the Talbots held a 51-41 lead before the Tigers went on a 13-2 run to grab a 54-53 lead with three minutes to play. North Allegheny brushed off the rust from the third quarter and regained their shooting stroke thanks to the efforts of seniors Sean Hennigan and Adam Haus. With the Tigers trailing 53-45 with about five minutes remaining, Haus converted on a terrific spinning lay-in and followed up with a three-pointer to trim the deficit to 53-50. After two free-throws from Meeker cut the score to 53-52, junior David Haus stole the inbounds pass away from Hampton and Hennigan made good on the theft with a successful runner in the lane to give the Tigers a 54-53 advantage with three minutes to go. Hennigan scored 13 points and Adam Haus pumped in 15 points, both vital to the Tigers comeback. For helping orchestrate the Tigers rally, Adam Haus was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

As it turned out, the Tigers lead was short-lived as Luther regained the edge for Hampton with a pair of free-throws moments later and connected on a critical lay-in with one minute to go to lift the Talbots to the WPIAL title game, 66-62. Hampton improves to 21-4 on the season and face undefeated New Castle in the WPIAL Championship Game on Saturday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh. The Tigers fall to 21-4, but their season is far from over. With a final four appearance in the WPIAL playoffs, North Allegheny has earned a PIAA post-season berth and will await their opponent in the state playoffs next week.

FOURTH QUARTER SURGE POWERS NA PAST FOX CHAPEL

(2/24/13) In a nip and tuck battle through three quarters, North Allegheny pulled away from Fox Chapel in the final period for a 79-61 victory in the Class AAAA Quarterfinals. The lead changed hands countless times in the first three quarters and the score was even at 55-55 with six minutes to play before the Tigers gained command. North Allegheny broke the tie with a 20-2 run that was spearheaded by R.J. Colabrese. The senior point guard scored 18 points and was a perfect 10-for-10 at the free-throw line. Of his 18 points, 16 of them came in the second half. For his play, Colabrese was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

In the first three quarters, the Foxes traded baskets with the Tigers behind the efforts of junior Matt D’Amico who scored a game-high 23 points. However, in the fourth quarter Fox Chapel unraveled by committing numerous turnovers, and 21 turnovers for the game. Junior David Haus was the top thief for the Tigers with six steals and pumped in 10 points offensively. Joining Colabrese and Haus in double-digits were seniors James Meeker and Adam Haus who poured in 12 points apiece.  For Fox Chapel, junior Brian Papich scored 12 points and Billy Urso chipped in with 11.

North Allegheny improves to 21-3 on the season while Fox Chapel falls to 17-7 with the loss.  The Tigers will face the Hampton Talbots in the WPIAL Semifinals on Wednesday night. The Section 3 rivals split their meetings in the regular season with each team winning at home. Wednesday’s contest will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

TIGERS DEVOUR BIG MACS FOR FIRST ROUND WIN, 65-38

(2/20/13) As has been their custom this season, North Allegheny used the three-pointer to triumph over an opponent, this time with a 65-38 win over Canon-McMillan in the opening round of the Class AAAA playoffs. The Tigers poured in 13 treys on the night and grabbed control of the game with a 14-3 run to end the first half for a 39-16 lead at intermission.

In the first few minutes of the contest, the long lay-off in between games seemed to have the Tigers a bit cold from the field. However, the Tigers began to settle into the game by using an opportunistic defense and the hot hand of senior Adam Haus who scored 11 first half points on his way to a 14 point performance. Helping NA shake off a little rust and revitalizing the offense, Haus was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Thanks in part to Haus’ efforts in the opening half, the Tigers simply coasted to the victory in the second half. Along with Haus, senior James Meeker helped pace North Allegheny with 14 points as the pair combined for seven three-pointers. Junior Joe Mancini added 12 points with all four of his field goals coming from beyond the arc. Canon-McMillan was held to just 17% shooting, connecting on only 9 of 52 from the field. Senior Brett Haney topped out for the Big Macs with 11 points on the night.

North Allegheny improves to 20-3 on the season and will face Fox Chapel in the WPIAL Quarterfinals.  Canon-McMillan ends their season with an 11-12 record. The Tigers quarterfinal round game on Saturday afternoon will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

TIGERS SCORCH NORTH HILLS, 77-52

(2/8/13) Similar to their meeting earlier in the season, North Allegheny bombarded North Hills with a barrage of three-pointers on their way to a 77-52 win on Friday night. The win ended a brief two-game slide for the Tigers and capped the section schedule on a high note.

The three-point prowess of the Tigers was on full display early in the game as NA’s Joe Mancini matched North Hills’ Danny White trey-for-trey in an early 6-6 tie in the first quarter. After a free-throw by Dylan Mitchell gave the Indians a 7-6 lead, the Tigers went on a 15-0 run and maintained a strangle-hold of the game for the rest of the night. North Allegheny built a 45-22 lead by halftime thanks to 47% shooting from beyond the arc and ended the contest by dropping in 12 treys on the Indians.

The game was a runaway in the second half with Mancini and Adam Haus leading the way with 17 points apiece.  Junior David Haus also touched double-digits with 11 points and added nine rebounds. On a night that was paced by three-pointers, the Tigers top sharpshooter, Joe Mancini, was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game. Mancini was 5 of 9 from the outside and set the tone for NA from the outset with his red hot shooting.

For North Hills, Joel Pepmeyer and Shawndale Jones scored nine points apiece. Despite scoring the first six points of the game for the Indians, junior Danny White finished with just nine points.

North Allegheny finishes section play with an 11-3 record and a 17-3 mark overall. North Hills concludes its season 9-13 overall and 4-10 in the section. NA FALLS TO NEW CASTLE ON ROAD, 74-58

(2/5/13) Despite a tough and gritty performance on Tuesday night, the North Allegheny Boys Basketball Team fell on the road to top-ranked New Castle, 74-58. Facing a New Castle team that had won 23 consecutive home games coming into last night’s contest, the Tigers took it to the Red Hurricanes in the first quarter, building up a 12-7 lead.  After Antonio Rudolph converted a bucket and free-throw to tie the game at 12-12, David Haus drove the court for a scoop lay-in to give the Tigers the lead right back, 14-12. Just before the end of the quarter, New Castle’s Anthony Richards dropped in back-to-back three pointers to give New Castle an 18-14 lead after one quarter of play.

North Allegheny senior Adam Haus opened the second quarter with a three-pointer and a follow up lay-in for a quick 5-0 run and a 19-18 lead. The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes as New Castle held a 22-21 advantage midway through the period. However, a 10-0 run by the Canes gave New Castle a double-digit lead it would maintain throughout the remainder of the contest.

In the second half, New Castle opened up a 19 point lead with a 55-36 score. The Tigers refused to go away as Elijah Zeise scored on the inside and James Meeker and Sean Hennigan connected from beyond the arc to trim the Red Hurricanes lead to 62-52 early in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately two errant passes by the Tigers sucked the air out of their momentum and New Castle put the game away with an 11-0 run for an eventual 74-58 victory.

Malik Hooker led all scorers on the night with 19 points for New Castle. Naval Academy recruit Shawn Anderson posted 16 and junior Anthony Richards scored 16, with 12 of his points coming in the first half on four treys. The Tigers were led by David Haus’ 15 points, followed by Adam Haus’ 13 points. Along with 7 of 11 shooting from the field, David Haus provided NA with a determined effort on the floor, setting up teammates for easy lay-ins and pulling down eight rebounds. For his efforts, David Haus was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

With the defeat, North Allegheny falls to 16-3 overall and 10-3 in section play. New Castle remains undefeated at 20-0 overall and 13-0 in the section. The victory increased the Red Hurricanes home winning streak to 24 games and locked up an outright Section 3 crown. The Tigers will try to bounce back at home on Friday with a meeting against rival North Hills. The game will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

TIGERS TRIPPED UP AT HAMPTON, 62-51

(2/1/13) North Allegheny suffered only their second loss of the season on Friday night as the Hampton Talbots upended the Tigers in Section 3 competition, 62-51. The road defeat snapped a five game winning streak for North Allegheny, while also pulling Hampton to within one game of the second place Tigers.

Hampton hampered the Tigers three-point shooters in the first quarter, limiting North Allegheny to just 9% from beyond the arc and 21% from the field. With the Tigers struggling to find the cylinder, the Talbots poured in 43% of their shots for a 19-11 first quarter lead. Thanks to the play of Sean Hennigan, David Haus and Elijah Zeise, North Allegheny battled back for a 26-25 lead midway through the second quarter. Hennigan posted a team-high 11 points, while Haus and Zeise followed with nine and eight points respectively. James Meeker added eight points as well.

Despite grabbing the 26-25 lead in the second quarter, Hampton responded with consecutive treys by Jon Floss and Joey Lafko, punctuated by Ryan Luther slam dunk to lift the Talbots to a 36-28 halftime lead. Hampton traded buckets with the Tigers in the second half and held off NA for the 62-51 victory.

The loss drops North Allegheny’s record to 16-2 on the season and 10-2 in Section 3, while Hampton improves to 17-3 and 9-3 in section play. DEFENSE, REBOUNDING HELPS TIGERS BLAST BUTLER FOR SECTION WIN

(1/29/13) North Allegheny’s defense forced 23 turnovers and turned a tight game at halftime into a laugher in the second half as the Tigers coasted past Butler, 83-66. Following a see-saw first half, the Tigers opened up a 58-48 lead after three quarters and put the game away in the fourth by excelling at the charity stripe. Despite Butler’s best efforts to extend the game in the waning minutes, North Allegheny dropped in 20 of 22 free throw attempts in the second half. Leading the Tigers was R.J. Colabrese on 10 of 14 shooting at the line, part of a 14 point night for the senior guard.

On senior night, another upper classmen who helped the Tigers to the win was Sean Hennigan. The senior guard was key to the NA charge on the offensive glass, pulling down a team-high five offensive rebounds, while also scoring a team-high 19 points. Collectively, North Allegheny out-rebounded Butler 35-30, but did most of their damage on the offensive boards, 14-6. The result was numerous second chance opportunities for players like Elijah Zeise who posted 13 points and seven rebounds.

While the game was still tight in first half, senior Adam Haus was important to the NA cause as he drained a pair of long distance three-pointers to spark the offense. In all, Haus finished the game with 17 points and a team-best four steals. For his efforts, Haus was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

To their credit, Butler did their best to keep pace with the Tigers in the first 16 minutes with outstanding three-point shooting. Sophomore Anthony Paterno connected on three treys in the first half to help Butler to 5 of 8 shooting from beyond the arc. However, Paterno and the Golden Tornado ran out of steam in the second half, hitting just 3 of 12 from three-point land. Senior Dominic Pusateri led Butler with 15 points, followed by Arum Krause’s 13 points and Paterno’s 12.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 16-1 overall and 10-1 in Section 3. Butler drops to 5-12 overall and 2-9 in section play. The Tigers look to continue their winning ways with a visit to Hampton on Friday night. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm.

NA EARNS SEASON SWEEP OVER RAIDERS WITH 67-51 WIN

(1/27/13) The Tigers had to wait an extra day because of the weather, but the North Allegheny Boys Basketball Team won their eighth straight over the Seneca Valley Raiders on Saturday night, 67-51. The Tigers took the Raiders by storm on their home floor, jumping out to a 20-8 first quarter lead. The Raiders could never quite recover from the NA opening salvo as the Tigers earned the season sweep over their section foe.

Junior David Haus led the charge for the Tigers, scoring 16 points. Joining Haus in double-digits was Joe Mancini who dropped in 12, R.J. Colabrese who netted 11, and Luke Soyster who added 10.  Seneca Valley was paced by Easton Bazzoli’s 17 points.

With the win, the Tigers maintain second place in Section 3 with a 9-1 mark.  NA also sits at 15-1 overall.  Seneca Valley falls to 13-4 overall and 7-3 within the section. TIGERS PULL AWAY IN SECOND HALF AT SHALER

by Dave Floyd

(1/22/13) North Allegheny broke open a competitive Section 3 contest at Shaler Tuesday night with a 29-8 run to close the game. Ten different Tigers scored in the 69-48 victory over the Titans, improving their record to 8-1 in league play and 14-1 overall. They remain just a game back of first-place and undefeated New Castle who also won Tuesday evening, besting Pine-Richland.

Teams traded baskets for much of the first quarter, with Shaler taking a 12-10 lead. That’s when NA senior James Meeker scored three consecutive times, one a three-pointer, to give the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish. Fellow senior Sean Hennigan nearly matched Meeker’s 7-0 spurt with a 6-0 run of his own late in the second quarter that gave NA a 30-20 advantage. The Tigers would go on to lead 32-24 at half.

In the second half, Shaler senior guard Geno Thorpe did everything he could to keep the Titans in the contest. The Penn State recruit scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the second, including four straight free throws that cut the lead to just 40-36. However, with their lead trimmed to only four points, the Tigers began to heat up. They went on an 8-0 run that stretched from the end of the third quarter into the beginning of the fourth and only added on from there. NA led by as many as 23 en route to securing the 21-point margin of victory.

Junior Elijah Zeise led the charge offensively for the Tigers, notching a team-high 12 points. Yet it was his offensive rebounding and defense that helped him earn the title of Wright Automotive Player of the Game. Senior point guard RJ Colabrese was the only other NA player in double figures with 10. Five others, though, scored at least seven points.

With the loss, Shaler dropped to 7-9 overall, 1-8 in section play. As stated, the Tigers upped their mark to 14-1 overall and 8-1 in Section 3. That sets up a critical league matchup in NA’s next contest, a tough road test at third-place Seneca Valley. Tip-off for that game is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

SECOND HALF SHOOTING LEADS NA PAST PINE-RICHLAND, 70-64

(1/18/13) North Allegheny’s shooters caught fire in the second half to lift the Tigers to a 70-64 victory over the visiting Pine-Richland Rams on Friday night in Section 3. The Rams built a 32-27 halftime lead behind 45% shooting and 13 points from senior Pat Sullivan. However, the Tigers found their groove early in the second half with a 7-0 run to grab a 34-32 lead.  Initiating the run, Adam Haus opened the half with a three-pointer and R.J. Colabrese followed with a steal and lay-in to build the Tigers momentum. Both Haus and Colabrese were keys cogs to the NA win. Haus led in scoring with 14 points, while Colabrese provided a steady hand at guard and 13 points of his own. Adding six assists, four rebounds and two steals, Colabrese was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

While the teams traded buckets for a while in the third quarter, North Allegheny eventually constructed a 10-point lead, 62-52, midway through the fourth period. The Rams, who finished with four players in double-digits, trimmed the NA lead to 62-58 in the final minutes. The Tigers withstood the late charge by the Rams with a timely three-pointer by Haus and clutch free-throws by Colabrese down the stretch to give NA the 70-64 win.

Senior James Meeker was also important to the NA cause with 11 points and two treys.  Overall, the Tigers shooters took charge in the second half, hitting at a 46% clip after knocking down only 34% in the first half. For Pine-Richland, Pat Sullivan and Collin Jackson topped out at 15 points, followed by Dean Steliotes with 12 and Sam Dunsmore with 11.

North Allegheny jumps their record to 13-1 overall and 7-1 in Section 3. Pine-Richland falls to 8-7 overall and 1-7 in section play. The Tigers will hit the road on Tuesday night for a section contest at Shaler. The game will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

TIGERS' TORRID SHOOTING SINKS NORTH HILLS, 73-59

(1/15/13) North Allegheny knocked down fifteen three pointers on Tuesday night, as they rolled past North Hills, 73-59.  Sean Hennigan and Joe Mancini led the Tigers with 14 points apiece.  Adam Haus, David Haus, and Wright Automotive Player of the Game James Meeker also scored in double figures.

The contest tipped towards North Allegheny right away as the Tigers began the game with deadly shooting.  They sank three triples before North Hills recorded their first points.  By halftime, North Allegheny had jumped out to a 44-25 lead, behind a ridiculous twelve makes from beyond the arc.  The Indians attempted to claw their way back in the second half, cutting the deficit to eight points with three minutes remaining in the game.  However, the subsequent North Hills possession was turned away when Elijah Zeise drew an offensive foul on Cory O’Malley.  After David Haus was double-teamed by a pair of defenders, he found Joe Mancini for a corner three, upping the North Allegheny lead to 68-57.  Defensive pressure and solid free throw shooting by Adam Haus and RJ Colabrese helped them capture their sixth conference win of the season, while upping their overall record to 12-1.

North Allegheny returns home on Friday night to face the Pine-Richland Rams.  The Tigers defeated the Rams earlier this year, 71-66, and will look for a sweep of the season series.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.  Randy Gore and Rick Meister will have the call on the North Allegheny Sports Network, beginning with a pregame show prior to the start of the game.

NEW CASTLE TOPS TIGERS TO STAY UNBEATEN

(1/11/13) Top-ranked New Castle kept their record unblemished with an 88-43 win at second-ranked North Allegheny on Friday night.  The Red Hurricanes stormed out of the gates to an early 32-12 lead in the first half behind an opportunistic defense and hot shooting from the outside.  The Tigers seized some brief momentum in the second quarter when Sean Hennigan and Adam Haus drained back-to-back treys to cut the score to 35-18.  Unfortunately for North Allegheny, the Tigers could get no closer as the Red Hurricanes’ well-balanced attack added onto their lead throughout the night.  Senior Shawn Anderson led the Red Hurricanes with 23 points, while Anthony Richards and Drew Allen combined to connect on 7 of 9 shots from beyond the arc.

Despite a frustrating a night for the Tigers, NA never relented against their opponent and showed flashes of what brought them to an 11-0 record heading into Friday night’s game.  The epitome of that effort was exhibited by senior Adam Haus, who dropped in 13 points and three treys, corralling five rebounds and two steals.  For his play, Haus was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

North Allegheny falls to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in Section 3.  New Castle jumps to 12-0 on the season and 6-0 in section play.  The Tigers will have the weekend off before continuing their section schedule on Tuesday night at rival North Hills.  The game will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm.

(1/8/13) In a battle of unbeaten teams from Section 3, the North Allegheny Tigers outlasted the Hampton Talbots on Tuesday night, 74-65.  The game was a track meet between the two squads and the Tigers boasted the best sprinters, breaking a 10-10 first quarter tie with an 8-2 run to end the opening stanza.  The run came courtesy of senior Adam Haus who personally knocked down back-to-back three pointers and followed with a lay-up to give NA an 18-12 lead after one quarter of play.

The North Allegheny lead grew throughout the game, namely behind the three-point shooting of senior Sean Hennigan who caught fire with four treys and 14 points before halftime.  Once again, a late quarter run was paramount for the Tigers as NA scored six quick points to take a 37-27 lead into the locker room.  The run was capped on a Luke Soyster three-pointer with seconds remaining in the half.

The momentum of the game stayed with the Tigers in the third quarter as NA continued to ride the hot hand of Hennigan for a 61-44 lead heading into the fourth.  That’s when Hampton began a frantic rally and junior Ryan Luther put the Talbots on his back for a comeback bid.  Luther scored 19 points in the second half, 28 for the game, to pull Hampton to within 67-62 late in the contest.  However, the Tigers answered the call in the clutch with free-throws by Hennigan, David Haus and R.J. Colabrese that put the game on ice for North Allegheny.  Hennigan, who led the Tigers in scoring with 23 points and added crucial free-throws down the stretch, was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Free-throw shooting played a big factor by game’s end.  North Allegheny converted 9 of 11 free-throw attempts, many of which came in late-game, bonus situations, while Hampton hit only 8 of 16.  Offensive rebounding was another boon to the Tigers cause with NA claiming nine offensive boards and 25 total rebounds.  Hampton grabbed 24 boards but only five of the offensive variety.

With the win, North Allegheny remains undefeated at 11-0 and 5-0 in Section 3, setting up yet another immense section showdown on Friday night against the also undefeated and top-ranked New Castle Red Hurricane.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm and the game will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Meanwhile, Hampton falls to 10-1 and 4-1 in the section.  The Talbots host Seneca Valley on Friday night.

NA SHARSHOOTERS LEAD COMEBACK OVER SENECA VALLEY, 55-49

(12/21/12) North Allegheny used the three-ball to erase a 14-point deficit for a come-from behind, 55-49, victory over the Seneca Valley Raiders on Friday night.  The Tigers hit 14 three-pointers in the game and nine in the second half to earn their third section win of the season.  In an electric atmosphere in the NASH gymnasium, the Tigers extended their winning streak over the Raiders to seven in-a-row.

Seneca Valley stormed out of the gates to a 17-3 first quarter lead thanks to a 10-point output by senior Easton Bazzoli.   Seneca Valley dominated the opening period, hitting 54% from the floor while holding NA to just 20% shooting.   However, a deep three-pointer by Luke Soyster cut the score to 17-6 before the final buzzer in the first quarter and the Tigers comeback bid was slowly starting to spark.

Bazzoli’s scoring line was indicative of how the night would turn out for the Raiders.  While the Raiders wing man opened with 10 points in the first quarter, Bazzoli was held scoreless in the second quarter and made only two more buckets for the remainder of the night. Meanwhile, the Tigers followed up a 2-for-10 opening stanza by dropping in treys from Soyster, James Meeker and Sean Hennigan.  By halftime, the Tigers trimmed their deficit to 26-20.

North Allegheny opened the second half on a 9-2 run, as Joe Mancini began to heat up from beyond the arc, and the Tigers grabbed their first lead of the game, 29-28.  The NA advantage was short-lived as R.J. McCauley, who finished with 12 points, and the Raiders took the lead right back, 30-29.  The lead changed hands seven times in the second half until the Tigers grabbed the lead for good at 51-49 in the last two minutes of the contest.  Meeker led the second half charge, scoring 11 points in the second half on his way to a 17 point evening.  Of his 17 points, Meeker buried five three-pointers and grabbed a team high five rebounds.  For his performance, Meeker was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Along with Meeker, R.J. Colabrese and Adam Haus also added important shots from beyond the arc in the second half.  Haus was especially clutch from the free-throw line in the game’s final minutes.  With the Tigers leading 51-49, Haus connected on a pair of one-and-one free-throw attempts to make it a two possession game with 30 seconds to play.  Moments later, Haus did it again to put the game away, 55-49.

With the win, North Allegheny remains undefeated at 6-0 and 3-0 in Section 3.  Seneca Valley drops to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the section.  The Tigers will host West Virginia powerhouse Wheeling Central tonight at 7:30 pm in a non-section affair.

TIGERS OUTLAST MT. LEBANON FOR ROAD WIN, 63-60

(12/12/12) North Allegheny led from start to finish as the Tigers earned a hard fought road win over the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils, 63-60, on Tuesday night.  While the Tigers led wire-to-wire, the game was far from a runaway as NA battled tooth and nail with the Blue Devils for the non-section win.

North Allegheny opened the game behind a pair of three-pointers by Joe Mancini and Adam Haus for a quick 6-0 lead.  The Tigers increased the lead to 12-3 before the Blue Devils trimmed the score to 12-8 by the end of the first quarter.  The opening quarter scoring began a trend in which the Tigers would breakout to a sizeable lead before Mt. Lebanon would narrow the deficit before the end of the period.  In the second quarter, the Tigers fattened their lead to 27-17 with the help of two Mike Carter treys and six points by junior Andre Sumpter.  However, the Blue Devils once again trimmed the score to 27-22 by halftime.

The offenses for both teams caught fire in the third quarter as the Tigers once again increased their lead to double-digits, 42-32.  Senior Sean Hennigan helped lead the charge for North Allegheny by scoring seven of his 10 points of the game in the second half.  Continuing the game’s pattern, the Blue Devils would chip NA’s advantage to 50-46 near the end of the third period.  That’s when senior Luke Soyster hit one of two big three-pointers in the game.  With two seconds left in the quarter, Soyster canned a trey to send the Tigers into the fourth quarter with a 53-46 lead.

In the final period, Mt. Lebanon cut the Tigers lead to 55-53 before Soyster drilled another momentum shifting three-pointer to give NA some breathing room at 58-53.  For his timely three-pointers, Soyster was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.  Soyster finished the night with 10 points and ultimately helped North Allegheny outlast the Blue Devils, 63-60.
