NA Swimming & Diving Leaps Past Bethel Park

Juniors Eben Krigger and Lauren McGrath and freshman Jack Wright each won two individual events as the North Allegheny swimming and diving teams stayed perfect in WPIAL dual meets by sweeping Bethel Park on Tuesday, February 2 at North Allegheny Senior High School.  The girls won 101-71, while the boys won 92-42.

Krigger won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.02 and the 100-yard freestyle in 48.63, while Wright won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.90 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.37.  Other first-place finishers among the boys were sophomore Mason Gonzalez in the 100-yard butterfly (51.36); junior Eric Staab in the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.97); and junior Brett Edwards in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.39).  In the relays, Staab teamed with sophomore Andrew Zhang and freshmen Jerry Chen and Joel Songer to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.37, while seniors Colin MacDonald and Daniel Songer teamed with junior Max Gonzalez and freshman Tolik Borisov to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:32.41.  Wright and Chen also were part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team, teaming with senior Michael Struk and junior Thomas McCaffrey to finish in 3:30.04.  Senior Stephen Savchik finished first in diving with 189.05 points.

Among the girls, McGrath won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.84 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:18.63.  Other first-place finishers were senior Gianna Caputo in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.28); junior Anna Verardi in the 50-yard freestyle (25.62); junior Aimee Verardi in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.02); senior Katie Wright in the 100-yard freestyle (55.65); freshman Nicole Marnell in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.78); and senior Erin Kuhn in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.15).  In the relays, Kuhn teamed with Aimee Verardi, Marnell and sophomore Ann Juneau to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:58.37, while McGrath and Anna Verardi teamed with freshman Lila McGrath and sophomore Serena Yan to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.90.  Lila McGrath also was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team, teaming with juniors Megan Christy and Caitlyn Edwards and freshman Mary Liz Flavin to finish in 3:48.09.

The North Allegheny swimming and diving teams are next in action on Thursday, February 4, 2016, when they host Seneca Valley at North Allegheny Senior High School.
