Sophomore Ann Juneau won two individual events as the North Allegheny swimming and diving teams stayed perfect in WPIAL dual meets by sweeping Hampton on Thursday, January 28 at Hampton High School.  The girls won 104-78, while the boys won 101-73.

Juneau, who holds the state’s fastest time among high school swimmers this season in the 200-yard individual medley, won at Hampton in the 50-yard freestyle (25.84) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.40).  Other first-place finishers among the girls were junior Lauren McGrath in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.36); freshman Lila McGrath in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.63); sophomore Kristine Mihm in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.85); and junior Caitlyn Edwards in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.43).  Juniors Anna Verardi and Serena Yan teamed with seniors Katie Wright and Erin Kuhn to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:54.37, while Verardi teamed with her twin-sister Aimee, junior Megan Christy and freshman Nicole Marnell to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.97.  An NA relay team (Yan, Aimee Verardi, Lauren McGrath and Christy) also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:47.20.  NA’s Maddie Mianzo and Jenna Edelman finished second and third, respectively, in girls’ diving.

Among the boys, first-place finishers were senior Gage Halle in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.29); sophomore Brett Edwards in the 50-yard freestyle (23.24); junior Tom McCaffrey in the 100-yard butterfly (56.74); senior Colin MacDonald in the 100-yard freestyle (51.20); junior Eric Staab in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.51); senior Michael Struk in the 100-yard backstroke (59.66); and freshman Jack Wright in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.94).  The relay team of junior Eben Krigger and sophomores Matt Kuhn, Andrew Zhang and Mason Gonzalez won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.17, while Gonzalez teamed with his brother Max Gonzalez, Zhang and senior Mack Pelo to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:30.88. Jared Ziegler won the boys’ diving competition with a score of 219.60, just ahead of second-place NA diver Nathan Ziegler, who finished with 202.45 points.

The North Allegheny swimming and diving teams are next in action on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, when they host Bethel Park at North Allegheny Senior High School.
