Tigers end losing streak with shutout of Hempfield
by: Bob Orkwis
After dropping games against Peters Township, Pine-Richland, and a tough late loss on the road last Friday at Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny looked to rebound at home versus Hempfield.
After a tight first half that saw the Tigers lead by only a goal, North Allegheny played a great second half on the way to a 5-0 victory at Newman Stadium.
North Allegheny struck early taking advantage of the games first penalty corner. Senior Emilia Barreiro scored her second goal of the season at 2:39 of the opening quarter for a 1-0 lead.
Despite the early advantage, the Spartans found their footing and held the Tigers at bay for the rest of the first and second quarters. Hempfield gained a possession advantage, and played stout defense, but couldn’t muster any shots on goal.
North Allegheny, which had eleven of the games twelve penalty corners, converted on their 10th of the game when sophomore Davia Gross found a pass from freshman Chloe Eich and scored for her third goal of the year to put the Tigers up 2-0 three minutes into the third quarter.
It was Audrey Evancho’s turn at 11:35 of the quarter, after a scramble in front of the net, her shot pinballed in to make the lead 3-0.
Two insurance markers came in the fourth quarter for North Allegheny. Kaylee Volk’s fifth of the season at 8:14, and Addison Burns netted her team leading 9th goal at 11:15 to seal the 5-0 win.
In addition to leading the contest in penalty corners, the Tigers outshot the Spartans 20-0. That made the shutout easy for senior Alaina Roth, who returned to action following an early season injury.
Midfielder Audrey Evancho was awarded the Wright Automotive Player of the Game. Not only was her third quarter goal her first of the season, but it was also her first varsity tally for the Tigers.
North Allegheny improves to 3-4-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the section with the win.
It’s on the road next for the Tigers as they visit Section 1-AAA leading Pine-Richland on Thursday, before returning home Saturday for a non-section tilt against Magnificat from Ohio.
