Tigers romp on Senior Night, 9-0
by: Bob Orkwis
North Allegheny celebrated its four seniors prior to the game and then celebrated on the field with a 9-0 victory over Norwin in a Section 1-AAA contest at Newman Stadium.
It took the Tigers a while to get untracked despite owning the possession in the 1st quarter, but Alexis Solomon was able to get the games first goal with just over a minute left in the opening stanza, when she put home a Gia Gross rebound for a 1-0 lead.
The two-goal lead came via a gorgeous goal for North Allegheny. Emi Barreiro flicked the ball into the circle from the right wing towards the far post, which saw Davia Gross deflect the pass into the goal with a midair tip for her 5th goal of the season.
The Tigers then scored off a penalty corner, when Barreiro’s insert found Audrey Evancho on the left wing, and the junior’s shot found the net through traffic for her 2nd goal of the year and a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Grace Gavran added her 3rd goal of the season on a reverse backhand rebound to put North Allegheny in front 4-0 at halftime.
Giana Gross scored the only goal of the third quarter when she tipped in a Kaylee Volk feed for her 4th goal of the season.
Barreiro converted a Solomon pass for a 6-0 Tiger lead. Solomon added her second goal of the night off a Fiola Ragan assist for a seven-goal margin.
Then, a concerted effort to get Ragan a goal paid off. The senior, who missed a year with a knee injury, converted a reverse backhand for her first varsity goal with 2:30 remaining.
The final goal of the evening, and the fourth of the final quarter came off the stick of Volk who made a nice fake to net her 7th goal of the season and the Tigers had a 9-0 win.
All four seniors contributed on the night they were honored.
Alaina Roth made one save in goal to post the shutout. Barreiro added a goal and an assist, as did Ragan. And Solomon scored twice and added a helper in the victory.
With the two-goal, five-point night, and the first goals of her varsity career, Alexis Solomon was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
North Allegheny is now (5-5-3, 4-3-1) on the season. It’s a quick turnaround for the Tigers, as the two-time defending Class A champions Shady Side Academy are in town tomorrow night for a 7:30 non-section start. If you cannot make the game, you can listen to coverage on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
