After two games this season between North Allegheny and Mt. Lebanon, a 0-0 tie and a late 2-1 Blue Devils win. It was no surprise the third game up was also close.

Mt. Lebanon took advantage of a 3rd quarter penalty corner for the games only goal and went on to defeat North Allegheny 1-0 at Newman Stadium.

North Allegheny had chances but could not get any clean shots on Olivia Marcovitz.

Giana Gross had a chance one-on-one early in the game but could not settle the ball down to put it on goal.

North Allegheny’s best chance came in the second quarter on one of its two penalty corners. Audrey Evancho’s shot from the left wing was strong but just went wide of the post.

Gross had another chance early in the third quarter with the game scoreless, but that never materialized.

At 5:08 of the third, Mt’ Lebanon’s Maggie Vines took the insert, and the ball found its way back to her off a feed from Sadie Bell and her shot found the net for the game’s only goal.

Down a goal and pressing, Gross again found the ball on her stick along the right goal line with :05 left, but pressure from the Blue Devils forced the ball out of bounds as the game ended.

Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Bragunier got the start for North Allegheny and unofficially made four saves.

With chances and opportunities, including one in the game’s waning seconds, sophomore forward Giana Gross was awarded the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Here is what the loss means in 3A: Mt. Lebanon, (7-5-1, 7-2-1) clinches at least second place behind Pine-Richland. The Blue Devils have a couple of non-section games before finishing with section games against Hempfield and at Pine-Richland.

The loss drops North Allegheny to (5-7-3,4-4-1) and most likely sees the Tigers finishing in third place. That would bring a playoff rematch from last season, which saw Mt. Lebanon win, 1-0.

North Allegheny is at Hempfield on Thursday, before visiting Norwin next Tuesday and rounding out section play by visiting Pine-Richland on October 16th.
