By Randy Gore
The North Allegheny boys’ volleyball team wrapped up Section 1-3A play with a 3-0 sweep of Pine-Richland on Senior Night. The Tigers honored their 10 seniors at UPMC Court prior to the contest, and then secured the victory by set scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-21.
The Tigers stormed out of the gates and cruised to easy wins in the first two sets. The Rams put up more of a fight in set three, but ultimately were no match for the No. 1-ranked team in the state. Despite the defeat for PR, senior and Ohio State commit Doolin Stober surpassed the 1,000 kill plateau with a kill in set two.
While Stober achieved a personal milestone, North Allegheny peppered PR with a barrage of big swings throughout the night, led by seniors Brendan Moore and Will Robertson with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Southpaw Nathan May notched six kills, and senior Matt Chou was a consistent force with four kills. Senior setters Jackson Failla and Elliot Swierczynski facilitated the offense with 14 assists apiece.
At the net, Moore and May totaled two blocks each, and Robertson frustrated the Rams with four aces, including three in set two. Senior libero Emmett Morris led the defense with 12 digs, followed by Robertson with seven digs and Failla with five.
The senior class of Morris, May, Failla, Moore, Chou, Robertson, Swierczynski, Nicholas Di Prato, Luke Conlon and Peter Bratich was named the Wright Automotive Players of the Game.
The Section 1-3A champions remain perfect on the season with a 10-0 overall record and close the section slate at 8-0. Pine-Richland slips to 8-6 overall and 2-6 in the section. North Allegheny will prepare for the upcoming postseason with a pair of weekend tournaments, beginning this Saturday at the State College Inviational.
