NA sweeps WPIAL team titles for fourth year in a row

The North Allegheny swimming & diving team traveled to Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh to compete in the WPIAL Championships on Thursday and Friday. For the fourth consecutive year, the boys and girls teams both claimed WPIAL titles. It is the 18th consecutive WPIAL championship for the NA girls while the NA boys have now won 12 WPIAL championships in the last 15 years.

The North Allegheny girls finished with 495 points, 138 points ahead of second-place Fox Chapel. On day one, the quartet of Dani Hinkson, Tori Tieppo, Eva Ogden and Madden Woycheck placed second in the 200-yard medley relay. Claire Bacu took home WPIAL gold in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.13. Julia Tengowski took bronze in the event two seconds behind Bacu. Evey Masztak also claimed points for the Tigers with an 11th place finish. Emma Dietz, Shelby Sundgren and Eva Zilinski finished seventh, eighth and 13th in the 200-yard IM. Madden Woycheck placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle while Sydney DeHainaut and Annie Elliot finished sixth and seventh. Aubrey Constable took three points finishing in 14th. Ogden (second), Hinkson (third), Natalie Reubi (eighth) and Angelina Li (ninth) all collected points for NA in the 100-yard butterfly. The 200-yard freestyle team featuring Elliot, DeHainaut, Masztak and Woycheck won a gold medal with a time of 1:35.49.

On Friday, Woycheck placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with Elliot, Ogden and Masztak taking eighth through 10th respectively. Bacu won her second gold medal in as many days claiming the 500-yard freestyle. Tengowski was a second behind with a runner-up finish. Reubi and Charlotte Sunderlin took eighth and 10th. Hinkson was the bronze medalist in the 100-yard backstroke while Angelina Li finished sixth. Sophia Davidson and Macey Wenzel collected points coming in 12th and 13th. Tieppo took the silver in the 100-yard backstroke while Sundgren finished fourth. Dietz claimed eighth place while Zilinski finished in 13th. The Tigers’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Bacu, DeHainaut, Hinkson and Tengowski finished second.

The NA boys finished with 483 points. 228 points ahead of Mt. Lebanon who finished in second. On Thursday, Danny Lesinski,Boys swimming team poses with their trophy, celebrating their victory at the 2023 WPAL championships. Team pride shines through! Alex Harbaugh, Mason Shantz and Zachary Totin got the Tigers off to a good start winning the 200-yard freestyle medley relay with a time of 1:31.12. Jackson Ross took home bronze in the 200-yard freestyle with Dylan Seiford in fourth. Peter Ross claimed sixth while Max Thirkell took 13th. Lesinski won bronze in the 200-yard IM while Brendan Yatchenko came in fifth. Emmanuel Chu was the eighth-place finisher while Landon Bolen took 10th. Totin was the silver medalist in the 50-yard freestyle. Odin Hsu took fifth while Talon Xing placed 10th. Shantz won silver in the 100-yard butterfly with Harbaugh a second behind in fourth place. Matthew Lindblad finished in 13th. The NA 200-yard freestyle relay team of Totin, Hsu, Shantz and Harbaugh took the the WPIAL gold with a time of 1:22.73.

On day two, Totin finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with Seiford, Hsu and Harbaugh finishing eighth through 10th. Jackson Ross took home bronze in the 500-yard freestyle while Peter Ross claimed sixth. Logan O’Keefe and Thirkell finished 13th and 14th for points. Lesinski was second in the 100-yard backstroke while Xing and Yatchenko claimed sixth and seventh. Ryan Crane finished in 12th. Bolen claimed bronze in the 100-yard breaststroke while Chu finished in sixth. Lindblad took points for the Tigers with a 15th-place finish. The quartet of Shantz, Seiford, Hsu and Lesinski took gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Tigers now turn their attention to the PIAA Swimming & Diving Championships that will take place on Wednesday, March 11 and Thursday, March 12 at Bucknell University. Events are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on both days. The NA boys are the defending state champions.

Maggie Lapina & Ethan Maravich go back-to-back at WPIAL Diving Championships

North Allegheny was at the friendly confines of the NASH Pool for the WPIAL Diving Championships on Saturday morning. The Tigers claimed WPIAL gold in both the girls and boys event with the boys taking gold and silver.

On the boys side, Ethan Maravich defended his title posting a 538.95. Teammate Anthony Farrah finished in second-place with a score of 527.45. NA has 37 points as a team going into the WPIAL Swimming Championships.

For the girls, Maggie Lapina won her second consecutive WPIAL title with a 494.70, 42 points better than Ali Water of SenecaHigh school swimming medalists on podium at North Allegheny pool with championship banners in the background. Valley in second place. This is the seventh straight season a Tiger won WPIAL gold in girls diving. Leah Maiolo finished sixth with a score of 392.45. The Tigers picked up 33 points heading into the WPIAL Swimming Championships next week.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday when they travel to Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh to compete in the WPIAL Swimming Championships. Swimming will start around 9:45 a.m.

NA finishes regular season unbeaten with sweep of North Hills

North Allegheny swimming & diving took on the North Hills Indians in a split meet on Thursday afternoon. The diving took place at the NASH Pool while the swimming events happened at North Hills High School. The Tigers finished the regular season undefeated in dual meets as the girls won by a score of 105-72 while the boys claimed a 98-74 victory.

At North Allegheny, Maggie Lapina (267.20) and Leah Maiolo (197.00) were the top two finishers on the girls side for diving while Ethan Maravich (275.35) and Anthony Farrah (258.60) placed in the top two spots on the boys side.

North Allegheny took the top three spots in both 200-yard medley relays. On the girls side, Dani Hinkson, Tori Tieppo, Evey Masztak and Sydney DeHainaut (1:50.68) were the top finishers while Brendan Yatchenko, Danny Lesinski, Zachary Totin and Nate Hilbert (1:40.77) claimed the top spot on the boys side.

The Tigers were top three in both the girls and boys 200 free. Kate Dudro (1:58.22), Charlotte Sunderlin (2:01.46) and Natalie Reubi (2:04.88) for the girls while Dylan Seiford (1:49.30), Alex Harbaugh (1:52.30) and Talon Xing (1:52.55) were the top finisher for the boys.

In the 200 IM, Shelby Sundgren (2:13.24), Emma Dietz (2:13.99) and Coco Wood (2:25.95) finished one through three for the girls while Xing (2:03.61), Harbaugh (2:03.98) and Seiford (2:07.80) claimed the top three spots for the boys.

Madden Woycheck (24.34) and Eva Zilinski (26.68) finished first and third in the girls 50 free while Mason Shantz (21.90) and Landon Bolen (23.99) finished first and third for the boys.

In the 100 butterfly, Eva Ogden (56.05), Hinkson (56.49) and Masztak (1:02.22) were the top finishers for the girls. Lesinski (50.71), Peter Ross (55.10) and Matthew Lindblad (55.92) finished top three for the boys.

Annie Elliot (54.27) and DeHainaut (55.06) finished top two for the girls in the 100 free while Jackson Ross (49.79), Max Thirkell (50.97) and Ryan Crane (55.49) finished top three for the boys.

Julia Tengowski (5:14.32) led the way in the 500 free for the girls while Claire Bacu (5:15.45) finished second. On the boys side, Logan O’Keefe (4:54.24), Bolen (5:06.31) and Adam Quinet (5:13.34) claimed the top three spots.

The girls 200-yard freestyle relay teams finished first and second with Quinet, Masztak, Reubi and Hinkson claiming the top spot with a time of 1:42.46.

Up next for the Tigers will be the Last Ditch Invitational held at NASH Pool on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. After that, North Allegheny will prepare for the WPIAL Diving Championships on February 21 and the WPIAL Swimming Championships on February 27.

North Allegheny Sweeps Shaler on Senior Night

North Allegheny faced an undermanned Shaler team at home in Wexford on Senior Night, and the Tigers remained undefeated in dual meets this season, beating the Titans 90-57 on the girls’ side, and 87-56 on the boys.

With no Titans divers participating, it was all Tigers, Maggie Lapina, Leah Maiolo, Lola Hood for the girls, Anthony Farrah, and Ethan Maravich for the boys.

The North Allegheny divers did well with internal competition, as there were two 9.0 scores received, and five divers scored over 50 points for a dive. Lapina led the girls, with Maravich scoring over three hundred points (300.05) with a final dive score of 61.20 for the boys.

It would not be the last we would see from the divers on the night, as there was an all-girls diving team participating in the 200-freestyle relay. Farrah and Maravich also swam in that event for the boys.

It was all North Allegheny in the swimming events, starting with the 200 medley relays.

Dani Hinkson, Tori Tieppo, Eva Ogden, and Madden Woycheck won for the girls (1:49.83).

Zachary Totin, Emmanuel Chu, Danny Lesinski, and Mason Shantz, had a winning time of 1:35.33 on the boys’ side.

In the 200 free, Loralei Quinet (1:58.60) and Jackson Ross (1:47.52) were the winners. Eva Zilinski (2:14.60) and Jackson Ross again (2:03.64) were victorious in the 200-yard IM event.

In the 50 free, it was Ogden (25.07) and Totin (21.14) winning, with Hinkson (58.39) and Totin (51.04) again as the winners in the 100 fly.

Freshman Aubrey Constable (55.60) and Lesinski (46.91) were the winners in the 100 free, which sent the rest of the competition into exhibition races.

The Wright Automotive Players of the Game winners included one senior on Senior Night.

Zachary Totin was the boys’ winner. The senior swam the first leg on the 200-medley relay winning team, while posting back-to-back wins in the 50 free and 100 fly events.

Loralei Quinet won for the girls. The junior set a lifetime best in the 200 free. She also swam as part of the 200 free relay team, and the first leg for the 400 free relay quartet.

North Allegheny has one more dual meet scheduled this season, on Thursday against North Hills. This will be a split meet, with the diving taking place at 3 PM at North Allegheny and the swimming at 5 PM at North Hills.

Following that, the Last-Ditch Invitational, if needed, is on Saturday, the 14th.

The diving championships are on Saturday, February 21st, at North Allegheny, with the swimming championships on Friday and Saturday, February 26th and 27th, at the University of Pittsburgh.

North Allegheny defeats Pine-Richland in penultimate home meet

North Allegheny remained perfect against WPIAL competition by posting a sweep of Pine-Richland in Wexford on Thursday night. The girls won by a score of 102-65 while the boys won 99-67. The Tigers are now (10-0) with two meets remaining.

The Tigers gold medal diving duo of Maggie Lapina (266.30) and Ethan Maravich (281.50) remained hot on the boards as the pair won the diving competition.

In the swimming events, the girls for North Allegheny overcame and early push from the Rams, before taking control, while the boys team was strong from the outset.

In the 200 medley relays for the girls, Dani Hinkson, Tori Tieppo, Eva Ogden, and Madden Woycheck were victorious at 1:49.15. Danny Lesinski, Landon Bolen, Mason Shantz, and Odin Hsu posted a winning time of 1:33.61.

In the 200 free, Whitney Calhoun and Bree Arthur from Pine-Richland finished first and second, with the first of several strong showings for that pair. Kate Dudro from the Tigers placed third. Max Thirkell (1:48.63) won on the boys side.

Alli Schomaker and Riley Shafer from Pine-Richland were the top two finishers in the 200 IM, with Tieppo finishing third. Lesinski (1:55.77) was the boys winner.

In the 50 free, the Tigers girls posted a sweep, which really put North Allegheny on the path to the win. Woycheck (24.47), Ogden (24.49) and Aubrey Constable (25.32) were the top three. Zachary Totin (21.82) and Nate Hilbert (22.81) were the top finishers for the boys.

Hinkson (57.21) won the 100 fly for the girls, while Cameron Wincko and Andrew Kirkpatrick placed first and second for the boys. Matthew Lindblad was third for North Allegheny.

A pair of sweeps for the Tigers in the 100 free. Evey Masztak (54.50), Annie Elliott and Sydney DeHainaut were the top finishers for the girls while Alex Harbaugh (47.63), Shantz and Dylan Seiford all finished 1-2-3 for the boys.

Pine-Richland’s Calhoun grabbed her second win of the night in the 500 free, with Natalie Reubi taking second. Captain Jackson Ross (4:34.41) outdueled brother Peter Ross to win the boys event.

The quartets of Dudro, Sydney DeHainaut, Elliott, and Woycheck (1:40.47), and Harbaugh, Hsu, Shantz, and Lesinski (1:25.37) took first in the 200 free relays.

Angelina Li (59.84) won the 100 back for the girls, with Ryan Crane (55.07) placing first on the boys side. This event was exhibition for the North Allegheny boys.

For the boys, it was Max Thirkell. The junior shaved three seconds off his lifetime best with a win in the 200-yard freestyle. He also swam in the 200-freestyle relay.

On the girls side, Natalie Reubi was honored. The junior had an excellent showing with a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle. She was also a part of the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams during the meet.

North Allegheny will have its final home meet of the season next Tuesday. The Tigers will celebrate Senior Night, before visiting Shaler on Thursday, February 12th. If you cannot make it for Senior Night, the North Allegheny Sports Network will have live coverage beginning at 5PM.
