Sircar Wins Gold at WPIAL Singles Championships

Posted on:

At Wednesday’s WPIAL Championships, freshman Advaita Sircar became just the fifth player in North Allegheny’s illustrious tennis history to win the WPIAL AAA Singles Final. Sircar joins Pete Frank (1970), Jake Jopling (2001), Tom Liebenguth (1976), and Zach Skorupka (2006) as WPIAL champions from North Allegheny. Sircar’s win is the first for a freshman at Class 3A since Peters Township’s Connor Bruce in 2017.

The championship match became an epic battle between second-seeded Sircar and the No. 1 seed, Gateway’s Adam Memije. In the first set, Sircar raced out to an early lead by breaking Memije in the first game and consolidating the break in his own first service game. The two then traded holds of serve as Sircar slowly began to exert his dominance. Sircar only lost a remarkable two points on his serve in the first set, capturing it 6-2.

In the second set, Memije responded with some excellent shot making of his own. Both players exchanged early breaks as Memije took a 4-3 lead on serve. The Gateway junior then broke Sircar and held to win the second set, 6-3, setting up a winner take all final set.

Sircar was undeterred with the minor setback and responded by immediately breaking serve in the first game of the third set. However, Memije would not go quietly as the pair traded early breaks. Leading 3-2, Sircar broke Memije yet again to go up 4-2. A quick hold by each player put the ball and the match on the strings of Sircar’s serve. Moments later, after trading groundstrokes for well over 2 hours, Advaita Sircar became one of the youngest AAA Champions in WPIAL history.

Sircar will advance to the PIAA Singles Championships to be held in Hershey on May 24-25.

At Tuesday’s WPIAL Championships, both freshman Advaita Sircar and sophomore Evan Kaufman won their first-round matches with ease.  Seeded No. 2 overall, Sircar advanced with a 10-0 victory over Franklin Regional’s Prem Nadasen. Fifth-seeded Kaufman also had little trouble facing off against 12th-seeded Colin Stalnaker of Franklin Regional, 10-1.

The quarterfinals proved to be more of the same for Sircar as he dismantled Upper St. Clair’s Ronan Gibbons, 10-1. The opposition proved to be too much for Kaufman as he bowed out 10-7 to Upper St. Clair’s Ari Plutko, seeded fourth at the tournament.

The semifinal round was a great back and forth duel between Sircar and Gateway’s No. 2 singles player, Zidaan Hassan. The two traded shots with Sircar getting a late break in each set to seal the victory, 7-5, 6-4. The win guarantees him a spot in the WPIAL Final and in the PIAA Championships at Hershey. Sircar Wins Section 2 Championship After All-NA Final

Posted on:

At Thursday’s Section 2-AAA Singles Tournament, both freshman Advaita Sircar and sophomore Evan Kaufman won their semifinal matches to set up an All-NA Final.  Seeded No. 1 overall, Sircar advanced with ease, 6-0, 6-0 over Seneca Valley’s number No. 1 singles player. Second seeded Kaufman had a bit more trouble facing off against a talented Josh Kim from North Hills. The two traded shots for almost three hours before Kaufman finally prevailed 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

That set the stage for the two Tigers to square off against each other in the Section 2 final. Kaufman blasted some shots early to take the first game, but in the end, his marathon semi-final proved to be too much. Sircar pounced at the opportunity to reel off eight of the next nine games and eventually the match, 6-1, 2-1 retired. The freshman phenom is the Section 2 Champion and will undoubtedly receive a high seed at the WPIAL Tournament.

Both Tigers will advance to next week’s WPIAL Championship set to begin on Tuesday at Bethel Park.
