Hofmann, Voinov Reach WPIAL Quarterfinals
On day one of the WPIAL AAA Doubles Tournament Thursday afternoon, juniors Richard Hofmann and Ivan Voinov entered play as the number ten seeds at the Monroeville Sport and Health Club. They took on the number seven seeds, Clayton Guyaux and Luke Ullman of Shady Side Academy in the first round. Dominating from start to finish, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead and finished the set off with a 10-3 advantage. Next up, the quarterfinal round saw the Tigers tangling with the Upper St. Clair Panthers, the number two seeds. Representing USC were Liam Gibbons and Kevin Kwok. Hofmann and Voinov picked up an early service break and maintained a lead throughout most of the match. After several opportunities for more breaks fell through, the USC duo broke the Tigers twice in the last three games to secure a come-from-behind win. Hofmann and Voinov gained valuable experience in their first foray as doubles partners and look forward to the 2018 season as the leaders of an experienced boys tennis team.
