LADY TIGERS COMPETE IN COUGAR CLASSIC
The NA Lady Tigers traveled to Palmyra, Pennsylvania on Saturday to play some of Central Pennsylvania’s finest in the Palmyra Cougar Classic. Although NA competed hard in both of their contests, they left without a win, falling 4-0 to perennial powerhouse Palmyra and 3-0 to Cumberland Valley.
In the opener, the Tigers were outclassed by the talented and skilled Cougars. Palmyra outshot NA by a whopping 24 shots, and had 23 penalty corners to NA’s 1. Despite being under attack from the outset, senior goalie Katie Shideler kept NA in the match with incredible save after save. She was assisted by solid play from senior defenders Lily DeNoma and Anna Hopkins, and by sophomore defensive midfielder Laura Schwendeman. Although not reflected in the final score, the Tigers were competitive with the Cougars throughout, showing significant improvement as the game progressed.
NA next played Cumberland Valley in the consolation game. The Tigers and Eagles played a back and forth game, with each side controlling play for long stretches of time. As has been the case so far this season, NA’s attack was led by its midfield tandem of senior Brooke Cameron and sophomore Bridget Russell. Cameron stretched the field with her long drives to streaking winger Angie Genter, while Russell wove in and out of Eagles’ defenders to gainh valuable yardage. Their efforts led to several scoring opportunities and penalty corners for NA, but the Tigers were unable to convert. Cumberland Valley, on the other hand, took advantage of its trips into NA’s defensive circle, tallying goals on 3 of 6 shots in the contest.
The Lady Tigers will return to the pitch on Wednesday, when they visit undefeated Section rival Pine Richland. NA needs to jump start the offense if it wants to take down the high scoring Rams. Game time is 7:30 pm (JV at 6:00 pm).
