Lady Tigers Win 2nd Straight PIAA Crown, NA Boys take 3rd Place

The North Allegheny girls’ swimming and diving team won a second consecutive PIAA Class AAA championship on Thursday at Bucknell University. The NA Boys were also impressive and posted a third-place showing at the PIAA championships with a team score of 166.50. It was the best finish for the NA Boys since winning a state title in 2019. For the Lady Tigers, it was their third PIAA crown in the last four seasons and ninth overall.

With a team score of 211 points, the NA Girls edged second-placer Upper Dublin by eight points. Once again earning critical points in the win were the Lady Tiger Divers, led by junior Juliet Hood who won PIAA silver with a score of 441.55. Finishing narrowly behind was junior Lola Malarky with a score of 440.70, good for state bronze. Sophomore Maggie Lapina earned important team points with a 10th-place finish. For the Lady Tiger swimmers, a dazzling performance was turned in by senior Natalie Sens, who won state gold in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 101.48. The 400 free relay quartet of sophomores Eva Ogden, Claire Bacu and Dani Hinkson, and senior Greta Mott, placed fourth with a time of 3:31.06.

Also earning important team points for the NA Girls, Bacu placed seventh and freshman Julia Tengowski placed 11th in the 500 free, Mott took ninth place in the 100 backstroke and sophomore Tori Tieppo garnered a 10th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. After a strong effort in day one, the NA Boys followed that up in day two of the PIAA Class AAA championships with a fifth-place performance in the 400 free relay by the combination of sophomore Zachary Totin, senior William Gao, junior Gus Miller and sophomore Gus Lesinski. The quartet crossed the finish line with a time of 3:06.87.

Also picking up crucial team points was junior Grant Regule with a 10th-place effort in the 100 free and senior Josh Berty with a 14th-place showing in the 500 free. Additionally, Gao, Lesinski and Miller finished consecutively 13th, 14th and 15th in the 100 backstroke.
