NA Drops Section Contest to Canon-McMillan
by Randy Gore
In a matchup of two top-five ranked teams in Class 6A, fourth-ranked North Allegheny dropped a 3-0 decision to fifth-ranked Canon-McMillan in a Section 1 contest on Wednesday afternoon.
Big Macs’ hurler Brooke Bumer limited the Tigers to three hits and struck out 10 batters in a complete-game shutout. CM scored all the runs it needed in the first inning on an RBI double by Skylah Steban and a run-scoring single courtesy of Kierston Williams for a 2-0 lead. The Big Macs maintained a two-run advantage throughout much of the contest before tacking on an insurance run in the seventh inning thanks to an RBI double by Kadence Merigo.
Senior pitcher Sammy Plotsko limited the Canon-McMillan lineup to four hits and surrendered only three runs, two earned, but was tagged with the loss. Plotsko lined a single for one of NA’s three hits. Leah Carlson and Zoe Rychel each laced doubles in the second and fourth innings, respectively. Adding stellar play defensively at second base, including a pair of catches on line drives in the fifth inning, Rychel was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
The defeat drops North Allegheny’s record to 5-6 overall and 4-4 in section play, while Canon-McMillan improves to 7-6 overall and 5-5 in the section. The Tigers will enjoy a four-day break before hosting Woodland Hills for a doubleheader on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
