Posted on:

Mackenzie Gilliland’s goal in the second overtime lifted Butler to a 8-7 upset win over North Allegheny on Wednesday night. The Tigers built a 5-1 lead early in the second half before the Golden Tornado rallied for a come-from-behind victory. It was Butler’s first win in nine tries against North Allegheny since the GT’s made the jump to Class AAA in 2016.

On the road, North Allegheny got off to a quick start and sprinted to a 3-0 advantage on goals by Isla Abrams, Mila Prusak and Maddie Lemmon with 12:06 to play in the first half. Following a goal by Butler freshman Taryn Hilovski, the Tigers responded with two consecutive goals by Laurel Donley and another by Abrams to stretch the lead to 5-1 with 23:31 on the second half clock.

The Golden Tornado stormed back in the second half with four consecutive goals, including three more by Hilovski, to tie game at 5-5 with 14:43 to play. Hilovski finished with four goals on the night.

Senior Leigh Failla knotted the score at 6-6 with 11:42 left in regulation. The contest remained deadlocked until the waning seconds of the game when Tori Stevenson scored to give Butler a 7-6 lead with just 13 seconds to play.

Undaunted, North Allegheny answered back and tied the game at 7-7 thanks to Donley’s second goal of the night with only one second remaining.

Despite NA’s late-game heroics to force overtime, Gilliland’s marker in the second OT propelled Butler to an 8-7 triumph.

North Allegheny slips to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in section play, while Butler improves to 1-2 in the section. The Tigers will host Fox Chapel on Friday night at Newman Stadium. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
