NA Falls At Upper St. Clair in Season Opener

The North Allegheny girls’ lacrosse team dropped a 9-4 decision at Upper St. Clair on Friday night in the 2023 season opener.

Facing off against a WPIAL semifinalist and PIAA qualifier from a year ago, the Tigers hung tough with the host Panthers and in a game that was much closer than he final score would indicate. Trailing 2-0 in the first half, senior attack Charlotte Schreiber netted a goal with 13:16 on the clock to cut the score to 2-1.

Still down by one coming out of halftime, senior middie Leigh Failla knotted the score at 2-2 less than two minutes into the second half. USC vaulted ahead with back-to-back goals, including one by sophomore attack Molly Powell, for a 4-2 lead with 21:47 remaining in the second half. North Allegheny answered back with two of the next three goals, including markers by Failla and senior Mila Prusak, trimming the deficit to 5-4 with 15:40 left in regulation. Prusak also anchored the faceoff circle for North Allegheny and won eight of 15 draws on the night.

While North Allegheny went toe-to-toe with USC for much of the night, the Panthers managed to pull away late by scoring the final four markers of the night to close out a 9-4 victory. Powell finished with a game-high four goals for USC and sophomore Anna Capobres followed with a pair of markers.

Agains the high-powered Panthers, the Tigers held their own thanks to the efforts of senior middie Becka Oates with four ground balls and junior goalie Izzie Trunzo, who faced a barrage of 28 shots and made 10 saves on the night.

North Allegheny looks to bounce back from the non-section loss to USC in the home opener on Tuesday night at Newman Stadium for a contest against Oakland Catholic. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
