Fresh off an overtime win at Shady Side Academy on Monday, the North Allegheny field hockey team won its second consecutive game with an 8-0 blowout of Hempfield on Wednesday night at Newman Stadium.

In the first quarter, a feisty Spartans defense staved off the Tigers in the early going before NA’s persistence paid off. Dictating the pace the entire night, North Allegheny cashed in on a penalty corner with 3:11 to play in the opening stanza when junior Josie Schomburg assisted on a goal by senior Isla Abrams for a 1-0 lead.

The floodgates opened in the second period as North Allegheny erupted for four goals. With 9:39 left in the half, junior Mia Brinkley scored on a penalty stroke to give NA a 2-0 lead. A little over two minutes later, Brinkley scored again, this time on a penalty corner, for a 3-0 advantage. Senior Sophie Grafton and freshman Addison Burns added goals prior to intermission to extend the NA lead to 5-0.

Seizing control of the game with their second quarter surge, the Tigers put the contest away in the second half as Abrams netted two more goals and Brinkley added another to close out an 8-0 win. Both Abrams and Brinkley finished a hat trick on the night. For her efforts, Brinkley was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

North Allegheny outshot Hempfield, 30-2, and led in penalty corners, 18-1.

The victory gives North Allegeheny a 3-2-1 overall record and a 1-1-1 mark in Section 1-AAA. Hempfield falls to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the section. The Tigers will return to action on Friday with a non-section matchup at home against Novi (MI) at 7:00 p.m.
