NA Sinks Shady Side Academy In Overtime, 2-1

Posted on:

Senior Isla Abrams netted the game-winning goal with 9:10 remaining in overtime to propel North Allegheny to a 2-1 victory at Shady Side Academy on Monday night.

With 40 WPIAL championships between them, the non-section contest was a battle of the two winningest field hockey programs in league history. It was the Tigers who struck first when freshman Addison Burns scored with 6:27 to play in the first quarter for a 1-0 lead. The marker by Burns was assisted by junior Mia Brinkley.

North Allegheny’s one-goal lead remained intact going into the second half until Shady Side tied the game at 1-1 with 10:40 left in the third period. That set the stage for Abrams’ heroics in the extra session.

Junior goalie Kayla Joyce had an incredible night in net, stonewalling SSA with an astonishing 24 saves.

With the victory, North Allegheny jumps to 2-2-1 overall. The Tigers will return to section play on Wednesday night with a matchup against the Hempfield Spartans. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
